Abstract

This study aims to conduct a comparative analysis of curriculum development and teaching methods in Islamic education in Indonesia and Egypt. Both countries have a long tradition in the development of Islamic sciences, but they demonstrate different approaches in accordance with their respective social, cultural, and educational policy contexts. This study uses a literature review method with a descriptive qualitative approach through a review of journals, books, and Islamic education policy documents. The results of the analysis show that the Islamic education system in Indonesia emphasizes the integration of religious and general knowledge in its curriculum, in line with the spirit of religious moderation and the demands of modern society. Meanwhile, Islamic education in Egypt, especially through Al-Azhar University, emphasizes a traditional approach based on tafaqquh fi al-din with a focus on mastery of classical Islamic sciences. In terms of teaching methods, Indonesia is more adaptive to active and technology-based learning models, while Egypt maintains the talaqqi and memorization methods, but has begun to adopt modern pedagogical innovations. Overall, both education systems have their own strengths; Indonesia excels in contextualizing the curriculum, while Egypt sets an example in maintaining the authority and continuity of Islamic scholarship. These findings are expected to contribute to the development of a balanced Islamic education that integrates values and modernity.

Abstract

This article aims to analyze and compare the education systems in Saudi Arabia and Indonesia through a literature study approach. This study highlights similarities and differences in educational objectives, curriculum structure, education management, and the types and levels of education applied in the two countries. In addition, this article reviews the history of the development of education in Saudi Arabia, especially the central role of Islamic education in shaping national education orientation and policy. The analysis shows that Saudi Arabia has an education system that is heavily influenced by religious values and Islamic law, while Indonesia develops an education system based on Pancasila with a more pluralistic approach. However, both countries face similar challenges, such as improving the quality of teachers, equitable access to education, modernizing the curriculum, and adapting to technological developments and globalization. The findings of this study confirm that despite fundamental differences in educational ideologies and approaches, Saudi Arabia and Indonesia share a common commitment to improving the quality of human resources through strengthening the national education system. This article is expected to serve as a reference for comparative research on education in Muslim-majority countries.

Abstract

The success of higher education institutions can be seen from several indicators. One of the indicators is the institutions that can produce outputs and outcomes with the competence in relation to the needs of society. The graduates’ academic achievement can be described through their grade point average (GPA). There were 79 graduates who got Cum Laude predicate at the Department of Islamic Studies, IAIN Imam Bonjol Padang in the 1st Period of graduation which was held on August to September and in the 2nd period on March, from the academic year of 2011 to 2015. The lowest GPA was 3.50 while the highest GPA was 3.93. The graduates who got Cum Laude have worked in several fields of jobs; such as Islamic Religion teachers, staffs in government offices, banks, and political parties both in West Sumatra and out of Sumatra. The study showed that there is no significant contribution of GPA with their career. It implied that GPA will not determine the graduate career either as a teacher on Islamic studies or as a teacher on social science and civics education. It also found that the graduates who work in out of field of studies were caused by the demand of the schools because of lack of teachers.

Abstract

This study explores the integration of Islamic spiritual values within thematic instruction in Madrasah Ibtidaiyah Negeri (MIN) across Padang City, Indonesia. As expectations grow for Islamic primary schools to balance academic achievement with the cultivation of religious character, understanding how to embed spiritual values into general subjects becomes increasingly vital. The research aims to identify the spiritual values adopted, examine their implementation in classroom practices, and assess their impact on students’ holistic development. Employing a qualitative–descriptive approach, data were collected from six MIN through classroom observations, teacher interviews, lesson plan analysis, and surveys of teachers and parents (n = 50). The findings reveal eight core values—tawakkul (trust in God), ikhlas (sincerity), amanah (responsibility), rahmah (compassion), syukur (gratitude), tauhid (oneness of God), istiqamah (steadfastness), and adab (ethical conduct)—integrated across multiple subjects. Strategies include spiritual reflection, contextual prayers, Islamic storytelling, and social service activities. The results indicate improvements in students’ moral behavior and sense of responsibility, demonstrating that spiritually based thematic learning effectively fosters both academic competence and spiritual maturity.
