Abstract

Introduction: Pneumonia is a common lower respiratory infection affecting all ages, caused by bacteria, viruses, fungi, or parasites. Klebsiella pneumoniae is a bacterial cause showing high antibiotic resistance, complicating treatment. As a result, alternative treatments using medicinal plants with antibacterial properties are needed. One promising plant is faloak (Sterculia quadrifida R.Br), traditionally used in herbal medicine and believed to have potential antibacterial effects worth further investigation. Methods: This study employed a true experimental method with a post-test only control group design. The treatment groups were given 70% ethanol extract of faloak bark at various concentrations (100%, 50%, 25%, 12.5%, 6.25%, and 3.12%). There were also a positive control group (meropenem antibiotic) and a negative control group (sterile distilled water). Data were analyzed using the Kruskal-Wallis test. Results: The 70% ethanol extract of faloak bark showed antibacterial activity against Klebsiella pneumoniae, with a significance value of p = 0.002 (< 0.05), indicating a significant difference in the inhibition zone diameters. Discussion: The extract demonstrated antibacterial properties and the ability to inhibit the growth of Klebsiella pneumoniae. Conclusion: The 70% ethanol extract of faloak bark (Sterculia quadrifida R.Br) exhibits antibacterial activity against Klebsiella pneumoniae.

Abstract

Background: Diarrhea is a global health problem that causes millions of deaths every year. Treating diarrhea often involves the use of antibiotics, but antibiotic resistance is a serious problem. Cherry plants (Muntingia calabura L.) has been used traditionally to treatt infections . This research can provide new insights regarding the potential of using cherry plants as an alternative for treating bacterial infections without relying only on antibiotics. Objective: To determine the antibacterial activity of ethanol extracts from the cherry leaves (Muntingia calabura L.) against the Escherichia coli growth. Methods: This research is using a true experimental method with a post-test only control group design. The bacteria used is Escherichia coli with 8 treatment groups, the positive control group using ciprofloxacin, the negative control group using sterile aquadest, and six concentrations of cherry leaf extract treatment groups. The data was analyse with One Way Anova test. Results and Discussion: Inhibition zones produced at the concentrations of 100%, 50%, 25%, 12.5%, 6.25%, 3.125% measuring 15.39 mm ; 14.02 mm; 11.82 mm; 10.82 mm; 9.64 mm; 8.32 mm , indicating strong to moderate antibacterial effects. Conclusion: Ethanol extracts of cherry leaves (Muntingia calabura L.) exhibit antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli in vitro. Keywords: Ethanol Extracts from Cherry Leaves, Antibacterial Activity, Escherichia coli, in vitro.

Abstract

Treatment of Propionibacterium acnes infection can use antibiotics, but the use of antibiotics in the wrong dosage can trigger antibiotic resistance. The development of natural antibacterial research with herbal plant ingredients is one alternative to reduce the incidence of resistance. One of the plants used is star fruit leaf (Averrhoa bilimbi linn). This research aims to determine the antibacterial activity of ethanol extract of star fruit leaf (Averrhoa bilimbi linn) against the growth of Propionibacterium acnes. This research used a true experimental design research type with a post-test only control group design. This research used star fruit  leaf extract which is macerated using 70% ethanol solvent and evaporated until a thick extract is obtained. Testing of antibacterial activity using the disc diffusion method (Kirby-Bauer) against the bacteria Propionibacterium acnes. The analysis used is  the One Way Anova statistical test. Star fruit leaf extract contains alkaloid compounds, tannins, saponins, flavonoids, and steroids. The test results show that the average diameter of the inhibition zone formed by each sample was at a concentration of 100% of 17,07 mm, a concentration of 50% of 15,21 mm, a concentration of 25% of 14,16 mm, a concentration of 12,5% of 12,86 mm, a concentration of 6,25% of 12,08 mm, a concentration of 3,125% of 10,58 mm and a concentration of 1,56% of 9,16 mm. Star fruit leaf extract (Averrhoa bilimbi linn) has antibacterial activity against the growth  of Propionibacterium acnes.

Abstract

This study aims to improve family nutritional literacy while presenting nutritious food innovations based on Moringa (Moringa oleifera) through educational activities on the dangers of malnutrition and training in the production of Moringa pudding for mothers of the Family Empowerment and Welfare Movement Team (PKK) in Naikolan Village, Maulafa District, Kupang City. Using a quasi-experimental design with one group pre- and post-activity, nutritional knowledge was measured through pre- and post-tests, while product acceptance was evaluated through a Likert-scale organoleptic test. The results showed an increase in the average knowledge score from 7.24 to 8.40, without a decrease in scores across all participants; the “Good” category increased from 36% to 80%. The organoleptic test on 24 panelists resulted in very high scores for all attributes (color 5.00; aroma 4.70; taste 4.78; texture 4.74; overall 4.87), with 100% of panelists stating “like–really like”. These findings confirm that the combination of nutrition education and moringa pudding innovation effectively increases understanding while producing a product that is well-liked, thus potentially becoming a child-friendly supplementary food solution and a community-based micro-entrepreneurship opportunity.
