Abstract

Introduction: Stress is related to the individual's psychological, physiological, and behavioral response to stressors. Many social and demographic determinants are probable causative factors of stress through a complex path. In Jakarta Province, a significant number of workers commute from surrounding cities, potentially exacerbating stress due to long travel times, job demands, and other related factors. This study aimed to determine social and demographic factors contributing to stress among workers in Jakarta Province. Methods: A cross-sectional online survey was conducted between October and December 2023 among 200 workers aged 15–65 years. Data were collected using a self-administered questionnaire via Google Form, distributed through snowball sampling on social media. The survey included the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS-10), Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS), Social Capital Scale, UCLA Loneliness Scale, and Social Network Index (SNI). A backward stepwise linear regression was performed to identify significant predictors of stress. Results: This study found that the mean stress score among workers was 19.39, which indicated a moderate stress level. The model showed social support (ß=-0.13), social capital (ß=-0.90), age (ß=-0.07), income (ß=0.00), distance (ß=0.19) as predictors of stress among workers and also obtained an R-Square value 50.4%. Conclusion: Social support, social capital, age, income, and commuting distance significantly influence workers' stress levels in Jakarta Province. Enhancing workplace social support systems and promoting stronger social networks may help mitigate stress. Employers and policymakers should consider interventions such as flexible work arrangements and peer support programs to improve employee well-being

Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic has impacted various sectors and may trigger a decrease in quality of life (QoL), so resilience is urgently needed. This study aimed to analyze the role of resilience in the QoL of individuals during the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic in East Jakarta, Indonesia. An explanatory sequential mixed methods study was conducted with a cross-sectional design. The QoL was measured using the Indonesian-HRQoL on 300 respondents through multistage cluster sampling. The explanatory qualitative approach involved Focus Group Discussions and in-depth interviews. A Cox regression was used to analyze the quantitative data. The proportion of poor QoL was 26.30%. Poor resilience (individual, family, and community) contributed to poor QoL during the pandemic. Realistic perceptions determined the role of individual resilience in QoL concerning gratitude, sincerity, patience, mutual reinforcement, accepting circumstances, implementing health protocols, cognitive emotion regulation, adaptability, and optimism. The age of family decision-makers, social support, and self-control determined the role of individual resilience in QoL. The role of community resilience in mental-emotional disorders and QoL was determined by the stability of the education system, health system, political/government system, and pandemic management system.

Abstract

The World Health Organization estimated that chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) will be the highest non-communicable disease worldwide by2030, and pesticide exposure is one of major risk factors. This study aimed to determine effect of pesticide exposure on lung dysfunction among paddyfarmers. A case-control study was performed on April - May 2016 in Purworejo. The case group comprised 66 farmers suffering from lung dysfunction during2015 based on medical records, while the control group comprised 59 neighboring farmers showing normal lung function. Both case and control groups weretested using a spirometer and COPD assessment test (CAT) questionnaire. Logistic regression analysis of pesticide quantity (OR = 0.75; 95% CI = 0.317 -1.754) and duration of spraying (OR = 1.11; 95% CI = 0.430 - 2.891) adjusted for confounders showed no clear associations. Pesticide remained a potentialhealth risk for lung dysfunction due to farming duration (OR = 5.61; 95% CI = 1.124 - 27.990) adjusted by age, personal protective equipment, records of lungdisease, smoking habit, dust exposure, and indoor air pollution. The farming duration was revealed to be a risk factor, but no clear association was found between quantity and duration of spraying to lung dysfunction.

Abstract

One of the photokeratitis risk factors is acute reversible radiation of ultraviolet (UV) rays, which injure the cornea's epithelial tissue. Informal welding workers are susceptible populations to UV rays exposure. This study aimed to confirm the influence of UV radiation exposure on photokeratitis complaints in welding workers in Cimanggis, Depok, West Java. A cross-sectional study was conducted from February to June 2019 and used to select 100 welding workers purposively. A semi-structured questionnaire was used to determine photokeratitis complaints, age, education level, eye protection, safety knowledge, and work period; the UV radiation measured by A UV meter. Data were analyzed using a logistic regression test. We found the proportion of photokeratitis to be 84.0%, with 76.0% of UV radiation exceeding the Threshold Limit Values (TLV). The logistic regression test showed a significant effect of UV radiation on photokeratitis after controlling confounding variables (education level, eye protection, safety knowledge, and welding distance) (p-value = 0.006; AdjOR = 7.236; 95% CI: 1.74–30.07). It can be concluded that UV radiation, more than TLV, constitutes the primary risk factor for photokeratitis complaints. Risks for photokeratitis were influenced by low education level, poor eye protection, limited safety knowledge, and welding distance ≤ 45 cm.

Abstract

Agriculture is one of major sectors of Indonesia economic source with the high volume of pesticide used. Unfortunately, adverse health effect of neurotoxic pesticide has never been reported in Indonesia. This study aimed to determine effectiveness of personal protective equipment (PPE) during applied pesticides to neurological symptoms in farmers. This study was cross-sectionally conducted from April to May 2016 in Purworejo District. About 125 farmers were selected using purposive sampling, and restriction was applied in male farmers due to the high proportion of male sprayer. Data was collected by observation and interview. Logistic regression showed protective result of PPE used during preparing (POR=0.402; 95% CI 0.114-1.423) and spraying (POR = 0.382; 95% CI 0.110-1.320), also following wind direction (POR = 0.882; 95% CI 0.271-2.872) and bathing after spraying (POR=0.328; 95% CI 0.036-3.006) after controlled by confounders. Proper PPE used during preparing and spraying pesticide, following wind direction during spraying, and bathing after spraying can decrease risk of neurological symptoms because of pesticide exposure.

Abstract

Lung function abnormalities can be caused by smoking habits or air pollution. Sanitary landfills can produce ammonia, which can cause lung function abnormalities. This study aimed to determine a relationship between ammonia exposure based on the length of work and lung function abnormalities among traditional scavengers at the Sumur Batu Landfill, Bekasi City, West Java Province, Indonesia. This analytical observational study applied quantitative methods and cross-sectional design. A total of 85 scavengers were selected using purposive sampling from March to May 2023. Data was obtained using a respondent characteristics questionnaire, spirometry, and spectrophotometer and analyzed using the Cox Regression Model. Most respondents (54.12%) had lung function abnormalities, and 79.17% had worked ≥8.5 years. The adjPR of ammonia exposure based on the length of work to lung function abnormalities was 3.413 (95% CI 1.51—7.71). There were confounding variables between ammonia exposure based on the length of work and lung function abnormalities: smoking status and lung disease record. In conclusion, ammonia exposure based on the length of work strongly correlates with lung function abnormalities in scavengers after adjusting for the lung disease record and smoking behavior.
