Abstract

Abstract

Abstract: This research aimed to find out the difference between male and female eleventh-grade students of Senior High School 12 Pekanbaru in vocabulary learning strategies and also to know the most and least common vocabulary learning strategies used by them. The sample of this research was taken by using the quota sampling technique. The number of students was 40 males and 40 females. The data was collected by using a questionnaire. This research used four types of vocabulary learning strategies, namely metacognitive strategies, cognitive strategies, determination strategies, and memory strategies. The result showed female students have the higher total average in vocabulary learning strategies than males. However, there was no significant difference in vocabulary learning strategies used by male and female students. Both male and female students indicated “checking bilingual dictionary” in determination strategies as the most common strategies and the least common strategies were “labeling physical object” in metacognitive strategies used by them.Key Words: Vocabulary, Vocabulary Learning Strategies, Gender

Abstract

This study is aimed at finding out the level of speaking anxiety experienced by a group of pre-service English teachers at a university in Indonesia and investigating the factors contributing to their speaking anxiety. Using cluster random sampling, this mixed-method research took 30 pre-service English teachers from the same class as the research participants. The data were collected through questionnaires and semi-structured interviews. The questionnaires were adapted from FLCAS (Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety Scale) designed by Horwitz et al (1986). The result of the questionnaire shows that the students’ speaking anxiety is overall in the mildly anxious level. It was identified that there were six students (20%) in the level of very anxious, seven students (23%) in the level of anxious, 14 students (47%) in the mildly anxious level, one student (3%) in the relaxed level, and two students (7%) in the very relaxed level. The interview data indicated that the anxiety was likely because of several inter-related factors: social, linguistic, and personal factors. The social factors include fear of making mistake, feeling under pressure dealing with people, afraid of negative evaluation by teachers, worrying of losing face; the linguistic factor relates to students’ lack of English ability (grammatical issues, proper pronunciation, and vocabulary). While from the personal factor deal with issues such as low motivation and and family problems.

Abstract

Today's youth face challenges and competition in life that is more complex than in previous times because the world is getting smaller due to globalization. The problem is that many youths do not yet have sufficient skills to exist in this rapidly changing era. This paper describes a community service activity sponsored by a group of lecturers in the English Education and Communication Studies Study Programs of Universitas Riau which aims to develop the ability of Riau youth to take the international standardised English test (IETLS). This paper further explains the concept of training, the content of the training materials, and the effectiveness of the training. This training lasts for one month with four face-to-face training sessions. The rest is done online through the Google Classroom platform. The content of the training material focuses on improving the ability to take international standardized tests (IELTS). Data from the self-assessment conducted at the end of the service activity session showed that in general this activity had been running well and effectively. The training activities provided positive benefits for the participants as seen from the average self-assessment data in the very good category (3.52). More specifically, the average increase in participants' listening skills after the training was in the very good category (3.43). The speaking ability of the trainees has increased and is in the very good category (3.54). This increase also applies to reading and writing skills in the same category (3.63 and 3.47, respectively). Thus, this training has benefited the trainees in developing their soft skills.

Abstract

This study aimed to determine whether there is a positive correlation between reading interest and reading comprehension ability of the eleventh-grade students of SMAN 10 Pekanbaru. This study used a quantitative method to obtain data from participants. Using random sampling, the writers took 31 students from class XI MIPA 7 at SMAN 10 Pekanbaru. The data were collected using a questionnaire and reading test. Based on the results of the data analysis, the writer found that the correlation value between the two variables is 0.423, which means that there is a positive correlation between reading interest and students' reading comprehension. In addition, because the value of correlation is 0.423, it can be interpreted that this correlation is at the level of moderate correlation. Furthermore, the value of Sig. (2-tailed) is 0.018, meaning that the value of Sig. (2-tailed) is smaller than 0.05. Based on this, it can be concluded that (Ha) was accepted and (Ho) was rejected. This finding suggests that there is a positive correlation between reading interest and students’ reading comprehension. Keywords: Reading Interest, Reading Comprehension, Correlation.

The primary database used for searching the relevant resources is the e-resources of the Indonesian national library. The databases here have been connected to various reputable international databases such as ProQuest, EbscoHost, SAGE, Sciencedirect, Taylor & Francis, and many more. The data include those taken from e-books, journal papers, and scholarly articles. Taking data from these reputable resources is necessary to enhance the quality of the data collected. The e-module consists of three chapters with several sections in each chapter: video based explanation, text based description, example, interactive quizzes, and chapter summary. The results of the validations of media expert and material expert of the animated videos are 3.55 (very valid) while the interactive quizzes got an average score of 3.85 (very valid). Then, for the validations of the e-module, it go an average score of 3.96 (very valid) and 3.23 (valid) from the material expert and the media expert, respectively. On the whole, the average score of the validations is 3.60 (very valid). The e-module has been implemented to a group of students (n=20). The students’ responses show that the e-module has a very good category (3.75 for the attractiveness aspect and 3.61 for the convenience aspect). Therefore, it can be concluded that the e-module has a very good quality, both in terms of its materials and media, and is eligible to be utilized as a digital learning resource for Pre-Intermediate Structure course in the English department of Universitas Riau, Indonesia.
