Abstract

This study aims to investigate the effectiveness of digital flashcards in improving the vocabulary mastery of seventh-grade students of SMP Taruna Sakti Pekanbaru as measured through a vocabulary test. The study applied a pre-experimental design involving one group without a control group, in which measurements were conducted before and after the treatment. The data were obtained from a vocabulary test consisting of 30 multiple-choice items given as a Pre-Test and Post-Test. The mean score of the Pre-Test was 64, while the Post-Test mean increased to 86.23, indicating a notable improvement in students’ vocabulary achievement. The results were analyzed using the Wilcoxon Signed-Rank Test, which produced an Asymp. Sig. (2-tailed) value of 0.000. This indicates that the null hypothesis (H₀) is rejected and the alternative hypothesis (Hₐ) is accepted. Consequently, it can be concluded that the use of digital flashcards has a positive and significant effect on students’ vocabulary mastery.

Abstract

This study explored English teachers’ experiences in utilizing slide presentation tools to enhance English teaching at SMAN 8 Pekanbaru. Specifically, it examined how slides were employed to organize lessons, support comprehension, manage classroom activities, and motivate students. A qualitative case study was conducted with five purposively selected teachers, and data from semi-structured interviews were analyzed thematically to ensure depth and credibility. The findings highlight three interrelated dimensions: instructional, technological, and creative-motivational experiences. Instructionally, slides enabled teachers to align content with learning objectives, maintain lesson flow, and optimize classroom management. Technologically, teachers demonstrated strong familiarity with tools such as PowerPoint and Canva, showing confidence and adaptability when facing challenges such as technical disruptions. Creatively, the integration of visuals, animations, and multimedia features enhanced learner engagement while requiring careful balance between aesthetics and clarity. These insights suggest that slide tools function not merely as visual support but as integral pedagogical instruments that shape instructional delivery, foster comprehension, and sustain engagement. The study contributes to English education by underscoring the importance of digital competence and instructional innovation, offering implications for professional development programs in English Teaching contexts.

Abstract

This research explores the difficulties and the strategies faced by second-year students of the English Study Program at FKIP Universitas Riau in comprehending English journal articles. A descriptive quantitative approach was employed in this study, utilizing a sample of 77 fourth-semester students chosen through cluster random sampling. Data was collected through a questionnaire using a four-point Likert scale, designed to measure two variables: students' difficulties and strategies in comprehending journal articles. The results indicate that the main difficulties experienced by students include inability to use effective reading strategies, limited academic vocabulary, and lack of familiarity with the journal article format. Meanwhile, the strategy most used by students is Problem-Solving Strategies (PROB), followed by Global Reading Strategies (GLOB), and Support Strategies (SUP). These findings highlight that improving students’ mastery of academic vocabulary, familiarity with journal structures, and strategic reading skills is essential to enhancing their comprehension of academic texts.

Abstract

This study aims is to identify public speaking challenges which are mostly faced by pre-service English teacher’s at FKIP Universitas Riau during the English Students Conference (ESC). The ESC, which is part of the public speaking course aims to assess students' speaking skills in formal, academic settings. The method used was quantitative descriptive research, with data collected from 32 seventh-semester students through a validated questionnaire containing 40 items. Internal factors included linguistic and psychological aspects, while the learning environment included external aspects. The results of this study indicate that anxiety is the most common challenge, at a high level, while vocabulary was the highest challenge in linguistic aspects. Other psychological challenges were at a moderate level, such as lack of motivation, shyness, fear of making mistakes, and lack of self-confidence. Fluency, grammar, pronunciation, and comprehension are linguistic issues that are also at moderate level. External factors show minimal impact, with the lowest score coming from an unsupportive classroom environment and peers. In conclusion, psychological factors, especially anxiety, are the main challenges to effective public speaking performance. This highlights the need for targeted strategies focusing on anxiety management, building self-confidence, and creating a supportive learning environment.

Abstract

This study investigated students’ perceptions of difficulties in the listening section of the TOEFL among English Education students of FKIP Universitas Riau. The study aimed to identify which listening indicators were perceived as the most difficult by students. A descriptive quantitative method supported by interviews was employed. The participants consisted of 177 English Education students selected using stratified random sampling. Data were collected through a questionnaire adapted from Phillips’ (2001) TOEFL listening indicators and semi-structured interviews to support the quantitative findings. The results revealed that several listening indicators were perceived as highly difficult by the students. Indicators categorized as high difficulty included identifying speakers’ implied meanings, understanding idiomatic expressions, recognizing almost negative expressions, and distinguishing similar sounds. These findings indicate that students experienced significant challenges in comprehending implicit information and specific linguistic features in TOEFL listening tasks. The study suggests that greater instructional emphasis should be placed on these listening indicators to improve students’ listening comprehension skills.
