Abstract

This study examines the phenomenon of Fear of Missing Out (FOMO) within branded thrifting practices among students at Sultan Ageng Tirtayasa University. Thrifting, which was initially driven by the need to find affordable secondhand clothing, has now developed into a consumption pattern strongly shaped by social media. This research aims to explore students’ experiences, motivations, and the meanings they construct when engaging in branded thrifting using a qualitative phenomenological approach. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, observations of social media content, and documentation related to thrifting activities. Pierre Bourdieu’s theory of social practice is used to understand how habitus, capital, and field influence these practices. The findings show that social media plays a significant role in encouraging students’ interest in branded thrifting through review content, fashion hauls, shop recommendations, and live shopping sessions. Continuous exposure to these trends creates a sense of urgency for some students to keep up with certain styles so as not to feel left behind by their peers. This condition fosters FOMO, which later shapes students’ decisions when selecting and purchasing branded thrift items. Ultimately, branded thrifting becomes not only an economical choice but also a medium for self-expression, identity formation, and maintaining social presence both on campus and in digital spaces.

Abstract

The phenomenon of beauty standards on TikTok, such as fair skin, smooth faces, and ideal bodies, cannot be separated from the role of algorithms that continuously display content with certain beauty images. This study aims to describe how Sociology Education students at Sultan Ageng Tirtayasa University, class of 2023, assess these beauty standards and how they respond to them whether by accepting, rejecting, or criticizing them from a sociological perspective. This study uses a descriptive qualitative method with data collection techniques through in-depth interviews with five students, supplemented by observation and documentation. The results show that most students view beauty standards on TikTok as a social construct that is not entirely realistic and tends to be shaped by digital media. The students' responses to this phenomenon also varied, ranging from selective acceptance, rejection of the pressure of beauty standards, to being critical in shaping their identity. This phenomenon can be understood through Berger and Luckmann's social construction theory, which explains the processes of externalization, objectification, and internalization in the formation of social meaning.

Abstract

This study aims to understand healing culture as a lifestyle among Gen Z, particularly students at Sultan Ageng Tirtayasa University. Using a qualitative approach through in-depth interviews with seven informants, this study analyzes the meaning of healing, its driving factors, and its impact on the daily lives of Gen Z. The results show that healing is interpreted as an effort to calm oneself from academic and social pressures through simple activities such as resting, watching, and traveling. Social media also shapes how Gen Z practices healing, shifting it into a lifestyle trend. The culture of healing has a positive impact in the form of increased psychological comfort and reduced stress, but it also has negative effects such as consumptive behavior, procrastination, and the tendency to use healing as an escape. This study confirms that healing not only functions as mental recovery, but also as an expression of the identity of the younger generation in the digital age. Furthermore, the findings indicate that the practice of healing among Gen Z cannot be separated from the influence of digital culture and social interaction in online spaces. The representation of healing activities on social media platforms also contributes to shaping new social norms and expectations regarding how young people manage stress and express their well-being. Therefore, understanding healing culture is important to see how lifestyle, media influence, and psychological needs intersect in shaping the daily experiences of Gen Z.
