Abstract

ABSTRACT Background: The most common causes of worm infection in the community is the Soil Transmitted Helminth (STH), one of them is roundworm Ascaris lumbricoides. Indonesia has many medicinal plants that can be utilized because these plants are easy to obtain, the price is affordable and safe from various kinds of side effects compared to synthethic drugs, one of which is turkeyberry (Solanum torvum). The purpose of this study is to find out whether turkeyberry (Solanum torvum) fruit extract have an anthelmintic effect on Ascaris suum worm and what concentration can caused mortality to Ascaris suum worm. Method: This study using five concentrations etanol extract turkeyberry fruits 300 ppm, 600 ppm, 900 ppm, 1200 ppm, 1500 ppm and positive control, namely albendazole. Worm death observed in several hours, 6 hours, 24 hours, 45 hours and 48 hours. The data then analyzed using descriptive and probit analysis. Result: The result of the study show that mortality of the adult worms increases with the increase in the concentration of the extract. LC90 and LC99 of the extract are 747,589 ppm and 1002,313 ppm within 48 hours. The increase in extract concentration also cause the darkening of the Ascaris suum worm’s body. Conclusion: ethanol extract of S. torvum fruit have an anthelmintic effect on Ascaris suum worms in vitro.

Abstract

Tulisan ini disusun dengan mengkaji delapan jurnal penelitian Indonesia, delapan jurnal penelitian internasional, laporan dan peraturan Kementrian Kesehatan Republik Indonesia, website World Health Organization (WHO), Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), University of Florida Entomology and Nematology, dan satu buku teks.

Abstract

Abstract Background: Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever (DHF) is an endemic disease transmitted by Aedes aegypti which is supposed to be demolished by using the Larvicidal activity. However, there are some Ae. aegypti larvae which are found resistant against the temephos in some provinces in Indonesia. Thus, this has been one of the biggest concern of The Ministry of Health Republic Indonesia. Apart from the resistance effect caused, temephos has been reported causing a water pollution which triggers the decreasing standard of human health and immune system. These factors have created a need for search of a new and natural larvicide, which one of it can be gained from Averrhoa. This research is aimed at comparing the effectiveness between the extract Averrhoa bilimbi and Averrhoa carambola towards the Ae. aegypti larvae’s mortality. Method: An experimental laboratory research involving the design of post test-only control group. Twenty five larvae Ae. aegypti third instar were carried out at 5 different concentrations (0%, 1%, 1.6%, 2.6%, 3.4%, and 4%). The larva demolition is counted within 24 hours. The mortality data is then analysed with the probit analysis. Results: The extract of Averrhoa bilimbi and Averrhoa carambola can cause the mortality of the Ae. aegypti larvae. LC99 24 hours from Averrhoa bilimbi was recorded = 1.47% (1.20-2.04%), whereas LC99 24 hours was recorded from Averrhoa carambola = 8.96% (7.59-11.31%). The major loses appeared is the stretchy necks and injured appendices. The bioactive substances which are predicted to be the causes of the mortality in this research are saponin glycoside and flavonoid. Conclusion: The extract of Averrhoa bilimbi produces the strongest and the most effective larvicide which will be potentially developed as a new larvicide

Abstract

Background: The Aedes aegypti mosquito is a vector of many diseases that transmit diseases such as yellow fever, filariasis, chikungunya, zika, and Dengue Haemorrhagic Fever (DHF). The eradication of DBD mosquito is carried out mainly in places that have potential to become mosquito habitats, like containers or water reservoirs. Community action against the eradication of mosquito nests (PSN) rated 3M PLUS is still less, especially in draining the bathtub regularly. This paper aims to collect information on the characteristics of the container and its effect on the presence of aedes aegypti mosquito larvae so that a model of a mosquito larva-free bathtub can be created based on the morphometric study.Method: This paper is a narrative review of literature that analysed 21 research journals from 2015 to 2019, consisting of 17 Indonesian journals, four English journals, two books, and four articles Indonesian Ministry of Health. Result: The study found bathtubs that aren’t at risk as breeding places for larvae, are made of cement, are textured, brightly coloured, such as yellow, orange, or light green, have a cover, volume less than 50 litres, and a height of 80 cm.Conclusion: Bathtub’s becomes the most potential breeding place for Aedes aegypti. Based on the literature study, the characteristics of the bathtub can influence the presence of mosquito larvae, so to achieve a larvae-free bathtub, the bathtub can be modified according to the characteristics that have already been found.
