Abstract

The recurring accumulation of marine debris along the southern coast of Bali, particularly wood fragments and plastic waste, reflects the complex interaction between land-based human activities, climate change, and coastal oceanographic dynamics. This study aims to examine the potential contribution of terrestrial wood waste to marine debris in major tourist areas such as Kuta and Kedonganan beaches. The research applies a combined method of direct field observation during the west monsoon season and a comprehensive literature review, including secondary data on waste composition, ocean currents, and terrestrial waste management systems. Observations indicate that Kuta Beach is predominantly affected by wood debris such as branches and tree trunks while lighter plastic packaging is more common in areas like Kedonganan, suggesting that current strength influences the distribution of waste types. Analysis of household waste composition in several Bali districts reveals that wood and branch waste form a significant portion, particularly in Jembrana, Bangli, and Buleleng, supporting the hypothesis that much of the marine wood debris originates from upstream land-based sources via river systems. Intensified rainfall and riparian degradation—driven by land-use change and climate variability accelerate the transport of organic waste to the sea. This study recommends integrated ecosystem-based adaptation strategies, including lignolytic microbial decomposition, the installation of floating booms at river mouths, and the conversion of wood waste into circular economy products such as biochar through pyrolysis and wood-plastic composites.

Abstract

Leachate is one of the results of rainwater infiltration and the degradation of microorganisms in waste. Some leachate types usually contain salinity which is an inhibitor in biological treatment processes. Aerobic biological treatment usually also requires sufficient dissolved oxygen (DO) levels. This study aimed to determine the effect of salinity on oxygen transfer in saline leachate. This study used a DO meter to measure the DO concentration in the 2 L volume reactor. There were two variations, namely leachate without salinity and with salinity 6 ppt, where the processing was carried out with three repetitions. The final oxygen transfer coefficients for the leachate without salinity and with salinity were 0.021 and 0.014, respectively. While the detention time required for leachate without salinity is 47.5 minutes, it takes 71.43 minutes with salinity.

Abstract

Water is a human need to carry out activities ranging from daily essentials to agricultural needs and others. Domestic wastewater must meet physical, chemical, and biological requirements so that humans cannot be polluted by the water, especially the water around the Pasir Panjang Village area in Batam, Riau Islands. This study aims to determine the potential use of water hyacinth for environmental health. This research was conducted by direct observation and measurement of water quality by grab sampling. Observation results show that not all residents use septic tanks as wastewater treatment results from daily activities. Some residents drain their wastewater directly into water bodies or surrounding land, resulting in decreased environmental aesthetics. Water quality testing for nutrient parameters shows that the quality standards have been met. However, further measurements are needed for total nitrogen and phosphate. Besides that, it also causes a population explosion of water hyacinth. In addition to the ability to treat water hyacinth waste, its economic potential is also analyzed. The growth of water hyacinth is sufficient and fulfills its capacity, and water hyacinth can be used for various crafts that can improve the community's welfare.

Abstract

Marine tourism in Nusa Penida, Bali, has expanded rapidly over the past decade, attracting large numbers of domestic and international visitors to its renowned dive sites, coral reefs, and coastal landscapes. However, this growth has raised critical safety concerns that threaten both visitor well-being and the sustainability of the destination. This qualitative study draws on an extensive literature review and a structured hypothetical survey framework, designed in August 2024, to examine the systemic challenges in marine tourism safety. Rather than relying on newly collected empirical data, this research synthesizes existing reports, stakeholder commentary, and regulatory reviews to identify ten interrelated categories of risk: weak enforcement, poor infrastructure, unregulated tourism expansion, unsafe operator behavior, limited monitoring, environmental degradation, weather-related risks, lack of safety education, poor incident reporting, and fragmented governance. Through thematic analysis, the study links these issues to feasible and locally adaptive solutions, highlighting the need for integrated zoning, multilingual safety communication, institutional collaboration, and climate-responsive infrastructure. The findings underscore the urgency of developing cross-sectoral, adaptive marine safety governance that aligns tourism growth with environmental resilience and visitor protection. Policy recommendations are proposed for application in other high-risk coastal destinations

Abstract

The wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) in the Nusa Dua area has implemented a stabilization pond to reduce organic matter and nutrients. Because it has been operating since 1980, it is necessary to evaluate the existing conditions. The aim of this study was to determine the percentage of organic and nutrient reduction from the WWTP system. Organic removal in the form of BOD and COD parameters were 71.84% and 75.11%, respectively. Meanwhile, nutrient parameters in the form of NH3-N, TN, and TP have a percentage of 83.64%; 59.41%, and -375.81%, respectively. TP is the only parameter that has increased, causing a problem which is caused by the explosion of algae population in the reservoir. TP allowance should be a concern in choosing advanced treatment.
