Abstract

PT. X is a pharmaceutical company that produces wastewater with the potential to harm the environment. Although the company already has a wastewater treatment system in place, this study evaluates its performance through direct field surveys and qualitative analysis based on ideal treatment standards. The treatment system at PT. X uses a series of five stabilization tanks operated in a continuous flow. However, BOD and COD test results from November 2019 to March 2020 show that the treated effluent does not meet the required pharmaceutical wastewater quality standards. This indicates the need to redesign the existing treatment system. One solution is to improve the biological treatment process, as the current BOD/COD ratio of around 0.5 suggests poor biodegradability. In addition, introducing an electrocoagulation process could enhance performance, with COD removal efficiency reaching up to 55.4%.

Abstract

This study explores the potential of decentralized waste management systems utilizing Black Soldier Fly (BSF, Hermetia illucens) larvae as a sustainable approach to enhance community resilience and circular economy practices. The research aims to assess how BSF-based bioconversion can effectively reduce organic waste while generating valuable by-products such as animal feed and organic fertilizer. Using a mixed-method approach, both field experiments and qualitative analyses were conducted to evaluate waste reduction efficiency, biomass yield, and socio-environmental impacts within community-scale waste management systems. The findings indicate that decentralized BSF waste management significantly contributes to reducing the volume of organic waste by up to 70–80%, while producing high-protein larvae biomass (approximately 40–45% protein content) suitable for animal feed production. Additionally, the residual frass serves as a nutrient-rich compost, improving soil fertility and supporting local agricultural productivity. From a socio-economic perspective, the implementation of BSF systems fosters community participation, generates income opportunities, and reduces dependency on centralized waste collection services. The study also highlights key success factors, including public awareness, local policy support, and technical capacity building for maintaining consistent system performance. Overall, this research demonstrates that decentralized BSF waste management represents a viable, eco-innovative, and community-empowering strategy for sustainable waste handling in urban and rural settings. By integrating biological waste conversion with local governance and community engagement, the BSF model strengthens resilience, resource efficiency, and environmental sustainability at the grassroots level..

Abstract

This study delves into the critical determinants that influence community support for forest conservation policies within the Komodo District, utilizing a logistic regression analysis to dissect the impact of various socioeconomic and demographic factors on local residents' attitudes toward conservation. A detailed questionnaire was administered to 520 residents to capture perceptions of conservation measures, infrastructure development, and community involvement. Binary logistic regression revealed that the visibility of conservation efforts, including natural landscape protection and eco-friendly infrastructure, significantly influences public support for policies. There was a strong positive correlation between the visibility of conservation actions and community support. This includes visible protection of natural landscapes and eco-friendly infrastructure, which has significantly bolstered public approval. Adaptive business operations and local training initiatives were positively correlated with support for conservation policies, suggesting that economically beneficial conservation strategies are more likely to win public favor. Lower income levels were unexpectedly associated with more significant support for conservation policies, which could indicate a reliance on the benefits derived from conservation efforts. Conversely, younger demographic groups and island residents displayed a lower propensity to support existing policies. By aligning conservation efforts with the community's economic and social priorities, policymakers can ensure broader support and sustainable engagement.

Abstract

The Covid-19 pandemic has resulted in restrictions on people's daily activities. Including the Yogyakarta area which is famous for its tourism and education center. Changes indirectly allow changes in the rate of waste generation. The purpose of this study was to determine changes in the generation of waste generated in Yogyakarta during the pandemic and before. This study uses secondary data for data on waste generation and population in Yogyakarta City, Sleman Regency, and Gunung Kidul Regency. Analysis was performed using analysis of variance (ANOVA) with software. Waste generation in district areas tends to decrease compared to urban areas. However, judging from the rate of waste generation, the Yogyakarta City tends to decrease, while in the district it is increasing. When viewed from the ANOVA test, there was no significant change in waste generation during the Covid-19 pandemic. This also needs to be a concern where a decrease in waste generation is not always followed by a decrease in the rate of waste generation.
