Abstract

Food safety is a critical public health issue, especially in institutional settings such as university canteens, where large populations are served daily. Inadequate hygiene and sanitation practices by food handlers can lead to foodborne illnesses, placing students and staff at risk. This study evaluated hygiene and sanitation conditions in the canteens of a leading public university in South Sumatra Province, Indonesia, known for its active food service facilities. This study examined food handlers’ knowledge, attitudes, and practices and assessed the microbiological safety of chicken curry by testing for Escherichia coli (E. coli) contamination and total plate count. Using a cross-sectional design, data were collected from 35 food handlers and 7 chicken curry samples across multiple canteens. Structured questionnaires and microbiological analysis were employed. Results revealed that although most food handlers demonstrated good knowledge and positive attitudes, 57.1% exhibited poor hygiene practices. Several chicken curry samples exceeded acceptable E. coli levels, indicating potential health risks. These findings underscore the urgent need for ongoing hygiene training, strict supervision, and standardized certification for food handlers to mitigate microbial hazards and ensure food safety in university settings.

Abstract

Many factors contribute to the declining total fertility rate, including family planning programs. The successful implementation of the family planning method might be influenced by how the decision to choose a contraceptive method was made. This study aimed to examine the correlation between family planning decision-makers and modern contraceptive use among married/in-union women of reproductive age in Uzbekistan. The 2021-2022 Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey was used by selecting only married/in-union women of reproductive age of 15 to 49 years, totaling 2,794 eligible samples. The modern family planning use variables were divided into not using, using Long-Acting Contraceptives (LAC), and Short-Acting Contraceptives (SAC). The univariate, bivariate (Chi-square and ANOVA), and multinomial logistic regression were performed. Family planning decision-makers from both women and husbands/partners, healthworkers, or others were significantly associated with modern contraceptive use for SAC and LAC, respectively. The type of family planning methods was significantly influenced by decision makers. Spouses, family members, and health workers need to implicate women to decide the most applicable contraceptive method.

Abstract

The prevalence of caesarean section in Thailand is increasing every year along with the growing capability of women to work. This study examined the correlation between wealth index and caesarean section decision (decided in advance or after labour). This study used secondary data from the Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey (MICS) Thailand in 2022. The sample consisted of women who had at least one child. The dependent variable is the caesarean section decision, and the main independent variable is the wealth index. The data was analyzed for univariate, bivariate (t-test and Chi-square), and multivariate (binary logistic regression). The findings revealed that around 70% of women decided to deliver by caesarean section in advance (not after labour). The multivariate analysis found the richest women were 2.88 times more likely to decide to deliver by caesarean section in advance compared to lower wealth index quantiles. This study contributed to the current phenomenon that the richest women tend to deliver by caesarean section as an elevated social status compared to vaginal birth.

Abstract

Adolescents experience rapid growth and development and are a critical period for changes in health-related behaviours such as food choices and physical activity. The prevalence of obesity increased from 1.4% in 2016 to 7.3% in 2017. Nutrition education will be effective if supported by the right media and delivery methods, one of which is android-based media as a tool for nutrition education in children. The advantage of nutrition education with quiz game media is its ability to convey information and increase adolescent knowledge through interesting media. This study aims to determine the effect of nutrition education through quiz game application media (APKIS) on knowledge and consumption of adolescent snacks at MTs Negeri 2 Pontianak. This research is a quasi-experiment with a one group pretest and posttest design, conducted on 22 June-1 July 2022. A sample of 39 respondents was taken by simple random sampling. Variables of knowledge and consumption of snacks were analysed using paired t-test. The results showed a significant effect on knowledge before and after nutrition education (p-value 0.00 < 0.05), and there was an effect on the consumption of snacks before and after education (p-value 0.00 < 0.05). In conclusion, the use of quiz application game media (APKIS) has an effect on increasing knowledge and changes in snack food consumption.

Abstract

Household dietary diversity score (HDDS) is a crucial indicator of food security and nutritional outcomes. The data collection was done from 2017 to 2018 in Eastern Indonesia. This study aimed to capture the characteristics of HDDS based on district, province, religion, and head of household age. This study used secondary data from the Coastal Community Development Project (CCDP), IFAD Impact Assessment Survey 2018. The total sample of this study was 2,884 households. The HDDS was calculated based on the score of 12 food groups and presented in a bar graph using STATA version 17. The result revealed that the lowest HDDS was found in the Kupang district, East Nusa Tenggara Province, Confucianism or Konghucu Religion, and 15 to 25 years of head of household age. Household dietary diversity score is a critical measure of food security and nutritional status, reflecting a household's access to a variety of foods. Understanding and addressing these determinants are essential for improving household dietary diversity and ultimately enhancing nutrition outcomes.

Abstract

Background: Occupational health and safety (OHS) at hospitals is at high risk of near-miss events and human error, both of which have an influence on healthcare workers' safety and service quality. Although many hospitals have technical SOPs, problems still occur because the underlying reasons are rarely properly investigated. The Human Factors Analysis and Classification System (HFACS) framework can assist uncover the underlying causes of accidents, however its implementation in Indonesian hospitals is limited. Methods: This study used a qualitative case study methodology and a root cause analysis technique based on HFACS. Data were gathered over a six-month period by reviewing near-miss occurrence reports and conducting in-depth interviews with seven key informants at Patut Patuh Patju Hospital in West Lombok. Thematic analysis was carried out using NVivo, with data triangulation and member verification. Results: A total of 27 near-miss occurrences were discovered, with root cause patterns spanning all four levels of HFACS: risky acts, preconditions for unsafe acts, insufficient supervision, and organizational impacts. SOP breaches, weariness from heavy workloads, inadequate supervision, and an incident reporting culture that did not yet support the program were among the most significant issues. Conclusion: The deployment of HFACS successfully maps the interactions that produce OHS events at all levels in hospitals. These findings highlight the need of transforming the workplace safety culture into a non-punitive learning culture, which is supported by active supervision, continuing training, and work management rules that are more sensitive to tiredness concerns.

Abstract

The media aims to store, reproduce, and identify bacteria but has disadvantages such as being expensive, containing chemicals, and being easily damaged due to contamination. Therefore we need an alternative media that can overcome these limitations. Cilembu sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas, L.) is a natural ingredient that is easy to obtain and contains sufficient nutrients so it has the potential to be used as a basic ingredient for growth media. The purpose of this study was to determine the potential of Cilembu sweet potato flour as an alternative medium for the growth of Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli bacteria with a quasi-experimental design. Cilembu sweet potato flour is obtained by cleaning, chopping, drying in the oven, crushing with a blender, and sifting the tubers to obtain fairly fine flour. The flour was dissolved in agar and then inoculated with S. aureus and E. coli, each with 16 replications. The results showed that the average number of S. aureus colonies was 119.12 CFU (169.2 CFU in control) while E. coli was 160.56 CFU (221.2 CFU in control). The Mann-Whitney test showed that there was a difference in the number of S. aureus colonies on alternative media and NA (p = 0.006 ≤ 0.05), but there was no difference between the number of E. coli colonies on alternative media and NA (p = 0.057 > 0.05). Finally, there was a difference in the number of S. aureus and E. coli colonies on alternative media (p = 0.04 ≤ 0.05). The nutritional composition shows that Cilembu sweet potato flour has more potential to replace NA as a growth medium for E. coli than for S. aureus.
