Abstract

Free radicals can cause damage to cells or tissues, autoimmune diseases, degenerative diseases, or cancer. Therefore, the body needs important substances, namely antioxidants that can help protect the body by reducing negative effect from free radicals. Rose flower (Rosa damascena) has anthocyanin pigment which belongs to flavonoid group which has a function as antioxidant or free radical scavenger. This study aims to determine antioxidant and anti-elastase potentials of rose petals and receptacles. The method used in this study was a qualitative phytochemical test to determine the compounds contained in the Rose Petal Extract (RPE) and Rose Receptacle Extract (RRE), ABTS ((2,2’-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid))-reducing assay to determine antioxidant activity, and antiaging test with anti-elastase assay. RPE and RRE contained flavonoids, phenols, tannins and alkaloids, but did not contain saponins. RPE contained triterpenoids and terpenoids, while RRE contained steroids, but did not contain terpenoids. The inhibitory concentration (IC50) values in the ABTS reducing assay were 4.46 ± 0.34 μg/mL (RPE) and 15.49 ± 0.23 μg/mL (RRE), while the results of the anti-elastase assay were 17.51 ± 1.47 μg/mL (RPE) and 58.91 ± 2.31 μg/mL (RRE). Both RPE and RRE are potent antioxidant and anti-elastase, and RPE is more active than RRE in these assays.

Abstract

Various metabolic diseases, such as diabetes mellitus, are characterized by hyperglycemia, stemming from decreased insulin action, secretion, or both. The use of chemical medicines for diabetes mellitus, especially acarbose, involves regulating the digestion and absorption of complex carbohydrates. However, acarbose may disrupt liver function, prompting exploration into alternative sources for treatment, such as earthworm extract. The purpose of this study was to identify the effectiveness of ethanol extract and coelomic fluid from earthworms (E. eugeniae) on the lipid profile of male diabetic wistar rats (R. norvegicus) in vivo. The research hypothesis is that earthworm extracts could effectively lower the lipid profile of diabetic Wistar rats. This research is experimental research with pre-test and post-test control study group design, using an in vivo method. The results of the one-way ANOVA test of HDL were p=0.441; p=0.441; p=0.000; for LDL were p=0.691; p=0.101; p=0.049; for total cholesterol were p=0.107; p=0.347; p=0.486; and for triglycerides were p=0.028; p=0.926; p=0.553 on days 0, 7, and 14, respectively. Based on the research data, both ethanol extract and a combination of ethanol extract and coelomic fluid were able to reduce lipid profile levels on the 7th and 14th days. Earthworm extract has the potential to promote repair of β cells and is anti-inflammatory which can be used to reduce lipid profile levels.

Abstract

The combination of citric acid-tartaric acid and sodium bicarbonate in effervescent granules has an important role in providing an effervescent effect. Citric acid and tartaric acid are organic acids that can react with sodium bicarbonate when they come in contact with water. This reaction results in the release of carbon dioxide gas, which has a splitting effect and makes the effervescent granules dissolve rapidly in water. Research on the formulation and evaluation of effervescent granules of andaliman fruit ethanol extract with a combination of citric acid-tartaric acid and sodium bicarbonate aims to optimize the stability, solubility, and release of the active ingredients from the granules. This study is an experimental research. Evaluation of effervescent granules is carried out in the form of an organoleptic test. This test can be observed directly from the granules through the shape, color, aroma, and taste produced. Granular specific gravity test, namely real specific gravity, compressed specific gravity, flow rate test, angle of repose test, and compressibility. Tests for dispersion time and pH tests were carried out in this study. FI, FII, and FIII meet the requirements of the organoleptic test, compressibility, flow rate, angle of repose, dispersion time, and pH test. Even though the pH test for the 3 formulas found a pH range of 5.5 to 5.7, but still declared to meet the requirements because it is still close to neutral pH. The best influence on the physical properties of granules effervescent, namely in FIII, as seen in the organoleptic test, flow rate, angle of repose, and dispersion time.

Abstract

The extract of andaliman fruit has antimicrobial activity. The active compounds of andaliman fruit are believed to positively contribute to human health, one of which is flavonoids, which can improve the wound healing process because of their function as an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory. This study aims to determine the effect of giving ethanol extract of andaliman fruit on the healing process of incision wounds in Wistar strain white rats and collagen type III. This research is an experimental posttest-only controlled group design. This study used five groups: NaCL treatment, betadine treatment, 1% andaliman ethanol extract treatment, 3% andaliman ethanol extract treatment, and 5% andaliman ethanol extract treatment, where each group had six rats. Data analysis used normality tests, homogeneity tests, and ANOVA tests. The results showed that the ethanol extract of andaliman fruit contains several active compounds such as alkaloids, saponins, tannins, and glycosides. The fastest incision wound healing was the fourth test group, the test group with 3% andaliman fruit ethanol extract treatment on day 14, with an average length of incision wound healing of 3.44mm. The 3% andaliman ethanol extract had the potential to accelerate wound healing activity.

Abstract

The matoa plant (Pometia pinnata) is known as a medicinal plant that has high antioxidant activity. Cigarette smoke produces free radicals and causes oxidative stress, a condition where the number of free radicals in the body exceeds the capacity to neutralize them. The aim of this study was to evaluate the levels of malondialdehyde (MDA), superoxide dismutase (SOD) and histopathological features of rat’s lung exposed to cigarette smoke and matoa peels extract. The research method uses laboratory experimental studies using rats as research subjects. The design used was Randomized Posttest Only with Control Group Design. 24 male white rats of the wistar strain were divided into 6 groups: normal, negative control, positive control, and group I, II, III were given matoa peels extract 3, 6, and 12 mg/kgBW respectively and exposure to cigarette smoke for 14 days. After 14 days, MDA, SOD and histopathological picture of the rats' lungs will be compared based on the group. Data analysis was carried out using a one-way ANOVA test. The results showed that matoa peels extract could reduce MDA levels and increase SOD activity in rats exposed to cigarette smoke (p value <0.05). Group that is given matoa peels extract 12 mg/kgBW can reduce lung tissue damage.

Abstract

Clinacanthus nutans Lindau is known as the elephant trunk leaf which belongs to the Acanthaceae family. C. nutans can act as an antioxidant by reducing free radicals from the mitochondrial electron transport chain in the cell membrane. In this study, elephant trunk leaves will be studied regarding their content and antioxidant activity and their association with free radicals/Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS), which are compounds that are highly reactive. ROS can cause damage to cell integrity and functional cell disruption. Free radical reduction prevents lipid oxidation, which then reduces malondialdehyde (MDA) levels. By potentiating the antioxidant properties of Superoxide Dismutase (SOD) and reducing lipid peroxidation, C. nutans can reduce oxidative stress. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of elephant trunk leaf extract on malondialdehyde and superoxide dismutase levels in rats with high activity. The research method used was laboratory experimental research with a Randomized Posttest Only with Control Group Design. In this study, 25 male white rats of the Wistar strain were divided into 5 groups: normal, negative control, and treatment I, II, III which were given elephant trunk leaf extract at successive doses of 50, 300, and 2000 mg/kg BW ( Weight). and high activity for 14 days. MDA measurements using a spectrophotometer and SOD using calorimetry were carried out after 14 days. The results showed that elephant trunk leaf extract reduced MDA levels and increased SOD activity in the blood plasma of rats induced by high activity (P value <0.05).
