Abstract

Soft corals are the second-largest group of biotas that consist of coral reef ecosystem other than hard corals. The ecology function of soft coral such as a place to live and shelter various types of fish, soft coral also has a high economic value as an export commodity for the ornamental aquarium and the potency in pharmacology. The great economy potency can urge to uncontrolled natural taken. One of the alternatives is by culturing with transplantation method. Environment and different growth responses among soft coral species are the factors that shows the success method research used. The aims of this research were to examine the average growth rates of different transplanted soft coral species, culturing location, and the presence of interaction between different species of transplanted soft coral and culturing location towards growth rates. The average survival rates of different species of transplanted soft corals that cultured in a different location. Culturing location was located inside and outside of Pegametan bay, Buleleng regency. There were three soft coral species Lobophytum strictum, Sinularia polydactyla and S. asterolobata with five replicates each. The soft corals were fragmented with initial size ± 25 cm2 then sewed to the cement substrate. It was placed randomly to the transplant table at different culturing locations. The increased size of each transplanted soft coral species, the number of survivals and environmental parameters were observed in every two weeks for 12 weeks. Results showed that the average growth rates of soft corals significantly differed among species (P<0.05), whereas the average growth rates of transplanted L. strictum were the lowest among others. In contrast, the average growth rates of transplanted S. polydactyla, and S. asterolobata were not significantly different (P = 0.100) at all locations. The average growth rates of all transplanted soft corals were significantly lower when cultured inside the bay (P<0.05). It is found that the different average growth rates of transplanted soft corals were due to the interaction between soft coral species and location. The results also demonstrated that the average survival rates were significantly varied among transplanted soft coral species (P<0.05). All transplanted soft corals cultured outside of the bay reached 100% survival rates. It is suggested that the morphology and anatomy of each soft coral species and environmental conditions contribute to the success of soft corals transplantation.

Abstract

Banggai cardinal fish (Pterapogon kauderni) is a marine fish native to Indonesia. P. kauderni is listed as an endangered species in the red list category by the IUCN. P. kauderni is very dependent on microhabitats in the form of benthic animals (symbionts), namely sea urchins, sea anemones, and hard corals. Besides P. kauderni, other fish from the family Apogonidae also live in association with sea urchins. The purpose of this study was to examine the density of P. kauderni and associated biota and to calculate the density correlation between P. kauderni associated biota in the waters of Gilimanuk Bay, Bali. This study uses a modification of the Belt Transect method, with a transect of 50 meters long and 2.5 meters wide to the left and right. The total density of sea urchins was 0,088 ind/m2, the total density of Fibramia thermalis was 0,021 ind/m2, and the total density of P. kauderni was 0,071 ind/m2. Between P. kauderni and sea urchins there is a correlation with the value of r = 0,711 and a P-value of 0,031 < 0,05 which indicates that the large number of sea urchins will affect the number of P. kauderni in the waters. The correlation between density of P. kauderni and Fibramia thermalis worth r = 0,509 with P-value of 0,160 > 0,05, which means that the number of Fibramia thermalis has no effect on the number of P. kauderni.

Abstract

Microalgae Chaetoceros gracilis is widely used in aquaculture. Its culture highly depends on environmental factors, particularly temperature. This study aimed to examine the growth rate and its growth trend of C. gracilis, also chlorophyll-a concentration at different temperature. cultures were incubated at 25, 30 dan 340C for seven days using Na media with three replicates. Cell density was counted every day using a hemocytometer, whereas the concentration of chlorophyll-a was measured in spectrophotometry method. The differences in growth rates and chlorophyll-a concentration at different temperatures were statistically analyzed with One-Way ANOVA. The difference variables were further tested with the Tukey HSD test. The trend of the growth and duration of C. gracilis at 25 and 30 0C were similar, with the lag phase (three days), logarithmic (two days), stationary (one day), and declination (one day), in contrast at 34 0C that had lower duration and missed the stationary phase. The growth rates of microalgae C. gracilis was insignificantly differences at the temperature of 25 and 30 0C (0.7±0.05 cell/ml/day), but significantly lower at 340C (0.28±0.03 cell/ml/day). The chlorophyll-a concentrations at the temperature of 25 and 30 0C were not significantly different (0.37±0.05 and 0.39±0.03 mg/l), while the chlorophyll-a concentration at 34 0C was significantly lower (0.26±0.04 mg/l). This result indicates the high temperature (34 0C) inhibited the metabolism of C. gracilis as shown by doubling times that slower (2.5 day) than the temperature at 25 and 30 0C. It is concluded that the optimum temperatures for the C. gracilis were 25 and 30 0C, where as 340C was the inhibited temperature.

Abstract

Aquaponics is a combination of aquaculture technology with hydroponic technology in one system to create a symbiotic relationship between the two. The main component in the aquaponics system is fish, where fish waste and feed residues as a nutrient supply are very dependent on aquatic plants. Stocking density is one of the things that needs to be considered in aquaponic fish farming systems. Inappropriate increase in stocking density can cause adverse effects that are detrimental to farmers. This study aims to determine the best growth and density level of tilapia reared in aquaponics system. The research was carried out for 40 days in April-June 2022 at the Fisheries Laboratory, Faculty of Marine Affairs and Fisheries, Udayana University, Bali. The research design used was a completely randomized design (CRD) with 3 (three) treatments and each treatment consisted of 3 replications. The stocking density used was treatment I with a stocking density of 100 fish, treatment II 150 fish, treatment III 200 fish. The results of the study concluded that different fish stocking densities had an effect on survival, weight growth and specific growth rates. The highest survival rate was found in treatment III with an average of 87.3%, the highest weight growth was found in treatment I with an average of 3.29 grams, and the highest specific growth rate was found in treatment I of 4.67%.

Abstract

This study aims to investigate the feasibility of Landsat 7 ETM+ to identify coral reefs and shallow water benthic at Nusa Penida district in 2009 and 2012, comparison with the Reef Health Monitoring (RHM) results conducted by the Coral Triangle Center (CTC) using the Point Intercept Transect (PIT) method in the same periods. This study also aims to determine the changes of coral reefs and shallow water benthic cover during this period and the distribution at Nusa Penida districk. Shallow water benthic classification refers to English et al. (1997), with a modified by the addition of vegetation classes (seagrass and seaweed). The classification result using confusion matrix between the Reef Health Monitoring (RHM) with the classification of satellite image in 2009 obtained an accuracy rate of 65.85% with a kappa coefficient value of 0.525, while in 2012 the accuracy value obtained of 74.81% with kappa coefficient value of 0.650, which shows the results of that classification of satellite images of Landsat 7 ETM+ with the results of in-situ research is in a moderate level.

Abstract

Identification is necessary to identify the identity of an organism. Fish can be identified morphologically, namely by recognizing physical characteristics and looking for differences in the fish. This research was carried out for 3 months, from sampling, laboratory activities, and data analysis, starting from January 2021 to March 2021. Sampling was taken universally, samples were obtained from fishermen in the coastal waters of South Bali who caught eels. Laboratory activities are carried out at Fisheries Laboratory, Udayana University. This study used a descriptive analysis method. The sampling technique used in this study was probability sampling with simple random sampling. The stages carried out in this study were divided into two stages, including (1) sampling and (2) identification of morphological characters. The eel samples were obtained based on morphological identification of physical observation, eels are known to have a mottled pattern with slightly rounded oval tails and long fins. The morphometric measurements also obtained the results of the pre-dorsal length (PDL) ratio of 27.98%, the head length (HL) ratio of 14.14%, the ano-dorsal length (AD) ratio of 18.79%, and the ratio of pre-anal length (PAL) of 46.54%. The morphologically and morphometrically identified eel samples were identified as Anguilla marmorata.
