Abstract

This study examines the pronunciation variations and adaptations of cross-cultural students from Java, Nusa Tenggara, and Papua in learning English as a foreign language. The study aims to  analyze  what the differences of pronunciation variations among the three groups of students are and explore how they adapt their native language pronunciation to standard English pronunciation. This study used a qualitative descriptive design with data collection through audio recordings, observations, and semi-structured interviews with students taking English subject. The variation analysis focused on segmental and suprasegmental aspects, including word stress, intonation, and speech rhythm. The results show clear pronunciation variations: Javanese students tend to place word stress stably, Nusa Tenggara students display dynamic intonation influenced by their regional phonological patterns, while Papuan students exhibit a syllable-timed rhythm with a tendency to add vowels at the end of words. Despite their differences, all groups were able to gradually adapt to standard English pronunciation through conscious imitation, listening practice, and increased prosodic awareness. These findings support the theory of interlanguage phonology (Selinker) and the principle of intelligibility (Jenkins) which states that successful pronunciation learning is determined more by clarity of communication than by similarity to a native speaker's accent. The implications of this research emphasize the need for pronunciation instruction that integrates prosodic practice and cross-cultural awareness to improve intelligibility while maintaining students' linguistic identity.

Abstract

This study was motivated by the low proficiency of young children in recognizing the Hijaiyah letters, which form an essential foundation for learning to read the Qur’an. This situation is evident at Family Kananta Kindergarten, where some children still struggle to distinguish letter shapes and pronounce them correctly. To address this issue, teachers have implemented an innovative learning approach by utilizing Augmented Reality (AR)-based learning media, which is expected to stimulate children’s abilities in a more engaging, interactive, and enjoyable manner. The use of this technology not only displays letters visually in two dimensions but also in three-dimensional forms that can move and are accompanied by the correct pronunciation, allowing children to learn through multisensory experiences. The objective of this study is to determine the implementation methods and the effectiveness of using Augmented Reality-based learning media in improving children’s ability to recognize Hijaiyah letters at Family Kananta Kindergarten. The research design employed was descriptive qualitative research, with the primary data sources being the teachers and children in Group B at Family Kananta Kindergarten. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation, and then analyzed using the Miles and Huberman analytical model, which includes data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. The research findings indicate that the implementation of AR media is effective when carried out through several stages: introduction to the media, demonstration of 3D letters, play-based learning activities, fine motor skill development, and interactive assessment via digital quizzes. The use of this media has been proven to significantly improve children’s focus, memory, pronunciation, and motivation. Thus, AR media serves as an effective and relevant educational innovation in stimulating basic Quranic reading skills among young children.

Abstract

Although ChatGPT is commonly used to improve writing skills, its potential to improve speaking, especially English debate, remains understudied. This study aims to explore students' perceptions on the contributions of the Debate Coursebook with ChatGPT-supported learning activities for studying Matter (content), Manner (delivery, confidence, and pronunciation), and Method (structure, flow, rebuttal, and Point of Information). This qualitative research focuses on exploring the experiences of 10 students performing as debaters, moderator, timer, adjudicator, and audience through the interview, documentation, and observation. Each participant was given a unique code to guarantee anonymity and preserve the confidentiality of their identities throughout the research process, and the gathered data was examined using a thematic analysis technique. This technique was implemented to identify how they learn matter, manner, and method aspects (Freeley & Steinberg theory). The results showed that in the matter aspect, ChatGPT helped students construct more logical and relevant arguments, but some felt overly dependent on AI suggestions. For manner aspect, it is contributive for pronunciation, intonation, and confidence. Meanwhile, for method aspect, the debate structure and rebuttal skills became clearer, although some still had difficulty adapting the flow to the real-life debate format. ChatGPT-integrated debate coursebook is contributive for debate practice, especially big class, but it must be under the lecturer guidance. Instructors are advised to integrate ChatGPT as a supporting tool, not a replacement for conventional debate practice.
