Abstract

Introduction: The prevalence of stunting among children aged 24-60 months is a critical public health concern including in the Puskesmas Siempat Rube working area. Inadequate maternal knowledge about balanced nutrition and inappropriate feeding practices can contribute to the incidence of stunting. Objective: To analyze the relationship between maternal knowledge of balanced nutrition and maternal feeding practice on the incidence of stunting in children aged 24-60 months in the Puskesmas Siempat Rube working area. Method: This cross-sectional study was conducted in December 2023. The research sample consisted of 43 participants selected using purposive sampling. Balanced nutrition knowledge scores were categorized into poor, sufficient, and good; meanwhile, the higher the score for feeding practice, the better the mother's feeding practice was assumed. Height was assessed based on the TB/U indicator and categorized into stunting and not stunting. Hypotheses were analyzed using logistic regression tests, with statistical significance set at p < 0.05. Result: The prevalence of stunting in this study was 69.8%. Most mothers had insufficient knowledge of balanced nutrition (90.7%), and the average feeding practice score was 58.4. Maternal knowledge of balanced nutrition and maternal feeding practice are significantly related to the incidence of stunting in children aged 24-60 months in the Puskesmas Siempat Rube working area (p < 0.05). Maternal knowledge of balanced nutrition and maternal feeding practice act as protective factors against the incidence of stunting. The odds of children aged 24-60 months experiencing stunting were 0.056 times lower if their mothers had sufficient knowledge of balanced nutrition compared to mothers with poor knowledge. Similarly, each 1-point increase in a mother's feeding practice score could reduce the incidence of stunting by 0.910 times compared to mothers with a feeding practice score one point lower. Conclusion: Maternal knowledge of balanced nutrition and maternal feeding practice are significantly associated with the incidence of stunting in children aged 24-60 months in the Puskesmas Siempat Rube working area.

Abstract

Background: The MAD in children has an important role in preventing the risk of undernutrition. MAD in children is often associated with MDD in mothers because the mother's consumption pattern continues to feed the child who is born. Objectives: This systematic review aims to examine the relationship between MDD in mothers and MAD in children, and its role in undernutrition prevention. Methods: Articles were selected using the PRISMA method. Articles were obtained from Sciencedirect, Medline, and Embase in the 2017-2022 timeframe without data restrictions. The vocabulary used in the search is "Maternal Dietary Diversity" and "Minimum Acceptable Diet", and undernutrition, and only researched articles in English. Table matriculation was carried out to obtain an overview of the relationship between MDD in mothers and children's MAD in undernutrition prevention. Discussion: Research from 7 selected studies was conducted in five developing countries with high levels of food insecurity. Samples were obtained of 167 to 10,291 children aged 6-59.9 months. Six studies indicate the level of food insecurity in the area studied. Four of the seven studies showed significant results between MDD in mothers with MAD and undernutrition in children. Conclusions: Maternal MDD has a significant role in MAD in children and can be one of the factors that influence undernutrition, especially in developing countries which are highly food insecure.

Abstract

Background: The increasing prevalence of obesity has become a significant public health concern in Indonesia, particularly among urban workers who often lead sedentary lifestyles and adopt unfavorable dietary patterns. Objectives: To analyze the correlation between dietary patterns, physical activity levels, and obesity among urban workers in Indonesia. Methods: Major dietary patterns were derived using principal component analysis from a 17-item food frequency completed by urban workers in the fifth wave of Indonesia Family Life Survey (IFLS). Self-reported physical activity is assessed by the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ). Height and weight were measured to determine nutritional status based on Body Mass Index (BMI), which is then categorized into obese and non-obese urban workers. The association between dietary patterns, physical activity levels, and obesity was analyzed using logistic regression. Results: A total of 10,381 urban workers participated in the study. Four major dietary patterns were identified: a Western dietary pattern characterized by a high intake of fast food, meat, sugary snacks, dairy, and soft drinks; a prudent dietary characterized by fruit and vegetables; a modern dietary pattern characterized by instant noodles, fried snacks, and eggs consumption; and a traditional Indonesian pattern characterized by rice, vegetables, sambal (chili sauce), and fish consumption. Participants adhering to the Western dietary pattern had higher odds of obesity. In contrast, those adhering to the prudent dietary pattern and active physical activity showed lower odds of obesity. Conclusions: Western dietary patterns are associated with an increased risk of obesity, while prudent dietary patterns and active physical activity are inversely associated with obesity in Indonesian urban workers.

Abstract

This study aimed to optimize learning effectiveness in the Food and Nutrition Data Analysis course through the development of literacy-oriented teaching materials with a Quantum Teaching approach. The research employed a Research and Development (R&D) method using the 4D model: Define, Design, Develop, and Disseminate. The Define stage involved a needs analysis of 60 nutrition students, revealing that 88.5% required interactive teaching materials with step-by-step practical guidance. In the Develop stage, the teaching materials were validated by content and media experts, yielding scores of 91.25% and 89.50%, respectively, which fall into the “very feasible” category. The Disseminate stage involved limited implementation in one class, showing an increase in average student engagement scores from 73.40 to 88.20 and comprehension test scores from 71.85 to 87.45. These findings demonstrate that the developed materials effectively enhance student participation and mastery of data analysis concepts. This innovation addresses the gap in practical-oriented learning resources for nutrition students, aligning with curriculum demands and 21st-century learning skills. The developed materials are expected to improve competence in analyzing food and nutrition data, thereby supporting academic success and professional readiness.

Abstract

Underweight is when a child's weight is below the average range for their age group. The prevalence of underweight toddlers in Indonesia in 2023 reached 12.9%. Underweight is directly caused by food intake. This study aims to determine the relationship between macronutrient intake and the incidence of underweight in toddlers at Posyandu Bangun Sari Indah 6. This research method uses a cross-sectional research design. The population in this study consisted of toddlers aged> 6-59 months, with a total of 135 toddlers. The technique for selecting research subjects used a purposive sample of 48 toddlers. Data collection of food intake used a 2x24-hour food recall form, and underweight data used anthropometric measurements of BB/U. The data analysis technique was descriptive, using the Spearman rank correlation test and the logistic regression test. The results showed a relationship between energy intake (p = 0.003), carbohydrate intake (p = 0.004), protein intake (p = 0.005), and fat intake (p = 0.025) with the incidence of underweight in toddlers. The logistic regression test analysis showed that energy, carbohydrate, protein, and fat intake were not significantly related to the incidence of underweight.

Abstract

Nutritional status describes fulfilling nutritional needs through the intake and use of nutrients. Nutritional status is influenced by maternal nutritional knowledge, energy intake, and the status of working mothers. This study aims to determine the relationship between maternal nutrition knowledge and energy intake in lunchboxes and the nutritional status of children in the kindergarten of the Pengharapan Sejati Indonesia foundation. The design of this study is cross-sectional; the sample uses a total sampling technique of 46 respondents. This research was carried out in September 2024 - January 2025 at the Yayasan Pengharapan Sejati Indonesia. The data analysis was descriptive, Spearman's rank, and logistic regression. The results showed that the nutritional knowledge of the medium category of mothers was 23 respondents (50%). Energy intake for 25 children (54.3%) was in the low category. The nutritional status of malnourished children was 25 children (54.3%). The rank-spearman test results on the maternal nutrition knowledge variable were obtained with a p-value of 0.000. The variable energy intake in the lunchbox obtained a p-value of 0.002. The results of the logistical regression analysis of the nutritional knowledge variable with the nutritional status of the child obtained a p-value of 0.002 with an Exp B of 1.102, which means that every 1 point increase in nutritional knowledge provides a 1.102 times greater chance of a normal child nutritional status. The variable of energy intake in lunchboxes with nutritional status was obtained with a p-value of 0.264, meaning there was no relationship between the variable of energy intake in lunchboxes and nutritional status. This study concludes that there was a relationship between maternal nutrition knowledge and child nutritional status, and there was no relationship between energy intake in lunchboxes and children's nutritional status.
