Abstract

This systematic literature review examines the integration of Project-Based Learning (PjBL) with Socio-Scientific Issues (SSI) in science education, focusing on mapping empirical findings, implementation patterns, and research gaps that have not been widely studied. This study aims to identify the learning outcome variables measured, describe the characteristics of PjBL–SSI implementation, and reveal the main challenges and limitations of previous studies. Using PRISMA guidelines, 6 peer-reviewed journal articles (n = 6) published between 2020 and 2025 were analyzed. These articles covered various educational levels, from elementary school to higher education, with diverse research designs. The results of the study show that the integration of PjBL with SSI consistently has a positive impact on students' critical thinking, problem-solving, science literacy, digital literacy, and ethical awareness, especially through involvement in real-issue-based projects that require multidimensional analysis and value-based decision-making. However, this study also identified a number of key challenges, namely the limited readiness of teachers in designing SSI-based projects, the lack of standardized learning resources and assessment tools, and the dominance of research focus on the cognitive domain. Another important finding shows that the affective, social, and reflective aspects of students have received relatively little attention in previous studies, thus opening up opportunities for further research. Overall, this review provides a conceptual contribution by presenting a structured synthesis of the characteristics, impacts, and challenges of PjBL–SSI integration, as well as a practical contribution as a reference for educators and curriculum developers in designing contextual, relevant, and socially responsible science learning.

Abstract

The Village Development Index (IDM) of the North Padang Lawas Regency in 2023 remained underdeveloped. The status has been upheld since 2018, although many craft and tourism industries in North Padang Lawas Regency have the potential to contribute to the regional economy, one of which is batik small medium enterprises (SMEs). Batik SMEs in North Padang Lawas Regency are predicted to be the featured product of the regency. One of the batik SMEs, i.e., Batik Sekar Najogi, becomes the icon of North Padang Lawas Regency. However, limited knowledge and resources in developing varied batik motifs have made the batik SMEs in this regency unpopular, both provincial and national. The Abdimas Team and partners, i.e., the Department of Industry and Trade of North Padang Lawas Regency, hold training and coaching for the Symatrig computer application to develop batik motifs based on symmetrical patterns in mathematics. The application also has different motif development patterns to produce various batik motifs. Of 30 batik makers joining the training, 13 agree to utilize the Symatrig application in their businesses, while the others strongly agree. Batik makers also offer recommendations to continue conducting such activity to support those involved in the industry.

Abstract

Indonesian batik is known for its diverse motifs, yet many artisans still design patterns manually, which limits variation and innovation. This study develops Ambatig, an Android application that helps artisans create batik motifs more efficiently. The application was implemented in Android Studio and follows a waterfall development model. Ambatig transforms a user drawn base cell into structured repetitions by composing distance preserving transformations, namely translation, vertical reflection, horizontal reflection, half turn rotation of 180 degrees, and glide reflection. These operations are configured according to the seven frieze types introduced in the study. Functional black box testing confirmed stable performance with all scenarios passing. Compared with previous motif generation approaches, Ambatig introduces a parameterized on device frieze transformation pipeline that produces all seven symmetry families from a single base motif. Real time preview and export features support creative exploration while maintaining mathematical coherence in digital batik design.

Abstract

Geometry is a branch of mathematics that requires strong visualization and spatial reasoning skills; however, its abstract concepts are often difficult for students to understand. The use of Roblox integrated with Virtual Reality (VR) technology offers a potential alternative for creating interactive learning experiences and facilitating a more concrete visualization of geometric concepts. This study aimed to develop GeoWorld, a Virtual Reality-based learning medium on the Roblox platform for Euclidean and non-Euclidean geometry, and to determine its validity and practicality. The study employed a Research and Development (R&D) approach using the ADDIE model, which consists of the Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation stages. The research subjects were 10 twelfth-grade science students at ATS-TSAQOFIY Islamic Boarding School. The research instruments included material expert validation sheets, media expert validation sheets, and student practicality questionnaires. The data were analyzed descriptively using validity and practicality percentage techniques. The results showed that GeoWorld achieved a material validation score of 89.00% and a media validation score of 82.00%, both categorized as very valid. In addition, the student practicality test resulted in a score of 74.80%, which was categorized as practical. These findings indicate that GeoWorld is feasible for use as a virtual reality-based mathematics learning medium, as it provides an interactive and engaging learning experience while helping students understand Euclidean and non-Euclidean geometry concepts more concretely.

Abstract

This research is motivated by the low mathematical literacy skills of students at SMPN 5 Medan. The low mathematical literacy skills are caused by several factors, namely conventional learning and the use of interactive learning media and technology that has not been utilized optimally. One effort that can be done to improve these skills is through the application of the Realistic Mathematics Education (RME) approach assisted by GeoGebra. This study aims to determine the effect of the RME approach assisted by GeoGebra on students' mathematical literacy skills in geometry material. This study uses a quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental method and a pretest posttest control group design. The research sample was determined using a purposive sampling technique, so that two classes were obtained as samples, namely class VIII-8 as a control class consisting of 30 students, and class VIII-1 as an experimental class consisting of 30 students. The research instrument was a mathematical literacy ability test given before and after treatment. Data analysis with hypothesis testing using an independent sample t-test. The test results obtained a t value = -3.718 with a sig. The value of 0.000 < 0.05 indicates that H0 is rejected and H1 is accepted. Therefore, it can be concluded that the GeoGebra-assisted RME approach has a positive and significant effect on students' mathematical literacy skills.
