Abstract

This research explores using the Free Fire game in building a bonding intercultural social network among its players. In an era marked by rapid technological advancement and globalization, the internet has become a platform for diverse cultural interactions, with online games playing a central role. Free Fire, a popular mobile battle royale game, offers a unique environment for players from different cultural backgrounds to connect, collaborate and form social networks. This study uses a qualitative approach with a descriptive research design to investigate language use and the supporting and inhibiting factors in the formation of intercultural social networks through the Free Fire game. Data were collected through participant observation, interviews, and document analysis, focusing on how players use language to interact, communication strategies, and develop friendships. The results show that the importance of effective communication and collaboration in fostering social relationships, with supporting factors such as accessibility, teamwork, and a diverse community of players, as well as hindering factors such as language barriers, cultural differences, and in-game toxicity. This research contributes to the understanding of online gaming as a platform for intercultural exchange and provides insights into how gaming environments such as Free Fire facilitate the creation of cultural social networks.

Abstract

This study examines the linguistic strategies employed in Instagram skincare advertisements and their role in constructing persuasive messages and reinforcing dominant beauty ideologies. The study adopts a qualitative method through Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA), utilizing Fairclough’s three-dimensional framework: textual analysis, discursive practice, and social practice. Data were collected purposively from five Instagram posts by prominent skincare brands, selected based on relevance and audience engagement. The analysis reveals the use of imperatives, emotive vocabulary, structured narratives, and authoritative tone to build trust, appeal to emotions, and promote aspirational beauty ideals. These linguistic choices contribute to a discourse that equates beauty with confidence, self-worth, and social acceptance. The study identifies how these advertisements implicitly link consumption with self-improvement, positioning skincare not merely as a product but as a lifestyle necessity. The findings suggest that skincare advertisements on Instagram function not only as marketing tools but also as ideological texts that shape consumer identity and perpetuate societal norms regarding beauty and self-care. This study contributes to the growing body of literature on discourse and digital media by highlighting the intersection of language, ideology, and consumer culture in online marketing practices.

Abstract

This study examines the effectiveness of multimodal instructional media integrating text-based and video-based materials in developing English for Specific Purposes (ESP) vocabulary among Civic Education students, while also investigating potential gender-related differences in learning outcomes. Anchored in multimodal learning theory, the study proceeds from the premise that text and video constitute complementary rather than competing modes of vocabulary instruction, each contributing unique affordances to learners' lexical development. An interrupted time series quasi-experimental design was adopted, involving 82 second-semester Civic Education students at Universitas Negeri Makassar, Indonesia, who participated in four structured treatment sessions alternating between text-based and video-based instruction. Pre-test and post-test assessments were administered at every session, consistently demonstrating significant vocabulary gains across all treatments. Mean scores progressed from 75 (pre-test, Session 1) to 88 (post-test, Session 4), with female students outperforming their male counterparts across all assessment points. These findings contribute substantively to the ESP vocabulary research literature by demonstrating that multimodal text-video integration yields both immediate and cumulative vocabulary gains, and by foregrounding the pedagogical significance of gender as a variable in ESP instructional design.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine how university students use interactional functions to build solid social interactions within their student organization. This research applied a qualitative descriptive method using observation and semi-structured interviews with six members of the organizational student, HMPS BE Creative in the English Department. The data were analyzed using a thematic approach. The findings reveal that students frequently used various interactional functions such as greetings, expressions of praise, empathy, support, and feedback to maintain closeness and emotional bonding. These interactional functions were also linked with elements of Social Interdependence Theory, including positive interdependence, individual accountability, promotive interaction, social skills, and group processing. The study highlights how students’ daily conversations reflect not only their task coordination but also their care, emotional intelligence, and efforts to create a supportive organizational culture. This research contributes to the understanding of how language functions strengthen social relationships in academic environments.

Abstract

This study investigated the challenges experienced by students in an English for Public Speaking course during the implementation of blended learning instruction. This study employed a qualitative descriptive design to examine students’ challenges in the implementation of blended learning instruction in an English for Public Speaking course. Data were collected from three classes in the Business English Communication Study Program at Universitas Negeri Makassar through document analysis, classroom observations, and semi-structured interviews. The data were analyzed using the interactive model of Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña, which consists of data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing/verification, to identify and verify the recurring challenges experienced by students in blended public speaking instruction. The findings revealed four major categories of challenges. First, students encountered linguistic and content-related difficulties, including limited vocabulary, grammatical inaccuracies, and problems in organizing coherent and persuasive arguments. Second, methodological challenges emerged from unclear instructional guidelines, limited lecturer–student interaction, and insufficiently engaging asynchronous learning activities. Third, practical challenges were associated with unstable internet connectivity, limited access to reliable digital devices, and inadequate digital literacy. Fourth, psychological challenges, particularly speaking anxiety, fear of making mistakes, and low self-confidence, negatively affected students’ public speaking performance. These challenges were interconnected and collectively shaped students’ learning experiences in the course of English for Public Speaking. This study offered a holistic understanding of students’ challenges in the implementation of blended learning instruction in an English for Public Speaking course. By highlighting the interrelationship among linguistic, methodological, practical, and psychological factors, the study contributed to the development of more responsive blended learning practices that supported students’ communicative competence and public speaking development.
