Abstract

Elementary Indonesian language instruction faces persistent challenges including passive learning environments, limited student engagement, and suboptimal academic achievement. This study investigated the effectiveness of the Jigsaw cooperative learning model in enhancing teacher instructional skills, student learning activities, and academic outcomes in fourth-grade Indonesian language learning. A Classroom Action Research design following Kemmis and McTaggart's cyclical model was implemented across two cycles at SD Negeri Ambesia involving 27 fourth-grade students. Data were collected through achievement tests, structured observation sheets, and semi-structured interviews, then analyzed using descriptive statistics and thematic analysis. Teacher instructional performance improved significantly from fair (66%) in Cycle I to very good (82.5%) in Cycle II. Student learning activities increased from fair (66%) to very good (87%), demonstrating enhanced engagement and collaborative behaviors. Academic achievement showed substantial improvement, with classical mastery rising from 70.4% to 92.5%, exceeding the 85% target criterion. The mean score increased from 69.2 to 75.1 between cycles. The Jigsaw cooperative learning model effectively enhances teacher competence, student engagement, and learning outcomes in elementary Indonesian language instruction. These findings support broader implementation of cooperative learning strategies in rural educational contexts with appropriate professional development support.

Abstract

Early literacy acquisition remains challenging in Indonesian elementary schools where conventional teaching methods predominate. This study investigated the effectiveness of Powtoon-based animated image media in enhancing initial reading abilities among second-grade students. Employing classroom action research methodology, the study involved 25 students at SD Inpres Bumi Sagu across two intervention cycles during August 2025. Data were collected through pre-tests, post-tests, structured observations, and interviews. Quantitative analysis calculated individual absorption capacity, classical learning completeness, and classical absorption capacity, while qualitative data underwent thematic analysis. Findings demonstrated substantial improvements across intervention cycles. Classical completeness increased from 36% (pre-action) to 64% (Cycle I) and 84% (Cycle II), while mean reading scores advanced from 63.2 to 68.0 and finally 76.0. Teacher activity observations progressed from 75.75% to 85% (very good category), and student engagement increased from 70% to 81.25% (very good category). Qualitative observations revealed heightened motivation, sustained attention, and 92% student preference for animated instruction. Unexpectedly, students with stronger phonemic awareness foundations exhibited greater gains than those with severe literacy deficits. Results support cognitive theory of multimedia learning, demonstrating that animated media enhances literacy outcomes through dual-channel processing while improving engagement. The intervention proves effective as an enhancement tool requiring strategic integration with explicit phonics instruction for struggling readers.

Abstract

Student learning outcomes in Indonesian language subjects remain suboptimal in rural elementary schools, necessitating pedagogical innovations that leverage locally available resources. This study examined the effectiveness of implementing a Problem-Based Learning (PBL) model assisted by environmental resources in improving Indonesian language learning outcomes among fifth-grade students. This classroom action research employed the Kemmis and McTaggart spiral model across two cycles at SDN 3 Sirenja, involving nine fifth-grade students. Data were collected through structured observation protocols documenting teacher and student activities, field notes, and criterion-referenced achievement tests. Quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics to determine individual absorption rates and classical learning mastery, while qualitative data underwent thematic analysis following Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña's framework. Classical learning completeness increased dramatically from 11.11% at baseline to 88.88% in Cycle II, exceeding the institutional standard of 80%. Classical absorption rates improved from 32.22% to 80%, while teacher activity increased from 80.64% to 87.17% and student activity rose from 71.42% to 87.90%, indicating transformed classroom dynamics. The findings demonstrate that environment-assisted PBL significantly enhances Indonesian language learning in rural contexts by transforming passive instruction into active, student-centered learning. This approach offers a sustainable pedagogical model for resource-constrained schools, leveraging local environmental resources rather than requiring expensive materials or technology infrastructure.

Abstract

Along with the rapid development of globalization, the integration of regional cultural values in education has become increasingly important, particularly in strengthening the character of students from an early age. This study aims to describe the implementation of local wisdom-based cultural arts learning in building the character of fifth-grade students at SD Inpres Bumi Sagu. The research employed a descriptive qualitative method with data collected through interviews, document analysis, and observation. The subjects included the principal, homeroom teachers, dance teachers, and students as the primary participants. The findings reveal that local wisdom-based cultural arts learning at SD Inpres Bumi Sagu has been carried out effectively, although it remains an extracurricular activity and has not yet been fully integrated into the Merdeka Curriculum syllabus. The school successfully adopted the Torata Dance, a traditional welcoming dance from Central Sulawesi, as the main learning medium. The process was structured through initial orientation, dance practice, and closing activities that emphasized the philosophical and religious values of the local culture. Strong support from both the school and parents contributed to the success of the program. Students showed high enthusiasm, demonstrated the dance well, and understood its cultural meaning and origins. Moreover, this learning approach not only improved artistic skills but also fostered positive character traits such as hard work, creativity, responsibility, and religiosity.

Abstract

This study aimed to determine whether there is a relationship between beginning reading ability and the learning outcomes of third-grade students at SDN Panjo. This research employed a quantitative approach with a correlational research design. The subjects of this study were all 24 third-grade students of SDN Panjo. Data were collected through observation, beginning reading ability tests, and documentation of students’ learning outcomes. The collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistical analysis to describe students’ beginning reading abilities and learning outcomes, as well as inferential statistical analysis to examine the relationship between variables. The inferential analysis used the Spearman Rank correlation technique, as the data were not normally distributed and the sample size was relatively small. Hypothesis testing was conducted at a significance level of 5% (α = 0.05) with a sample size of 24 students. The results of the inferential statistical analysis showed that the calculated correlation coefficient (r_calculated) was greater than the critical value (r_table), namely 0.490 > 0.404. This finding indicates that there is a significant relationship between beginning reading ability (variable X) and students’ learning outcomes (variable Y) of third-grade students at SDN Panjo.

Abstract

Abstract

The decline in student discipline in elementary schools, exacerbated by globalization and technological advancement, necessitates effective classroom management strategies that foster intrinsic behavioral regulation rather than external compliance. This study examined classroom management strategies employed by fourth-grade teachers at SDN Bambalemo to cultivate student discipline and identified factors influencing their implementation. A qualitative descriptive design was employed, with data collected through systematic observations, in-depth interviews with four teachers (coded A1-A4), and documentation analysis. Data were analyzed using Miles and Huberman's interactive model, incorporating triangulation to ensure validity. Three primary strategies emerged: creating positive learning climates through warm teacher-student relationships and consistent modeling; organizing adaptive learning spaces that promote cooperation and ownership; and managing interactive teaching-learning processes through two-way communication and constructive feedback. Internal factors—including teacher personality, professional awareness, motivation, and growth mindset—and external factors—encompassing family support, school regulations, and community environments—significantly influenced strategy effectiveness. An unexpected finding revealed students spontaneously maintained classroom tidiness, indicating internalized responsibility. Student discipline develops through ecological processes involving habituation, role modeling, and multi-stakeholder collaboration rather than authoritarian control. The findings challenge punitive approaches while supporting relationship-based pedagogies that foster self-regulation, providing empirical foundations for character-based classroom management in elementary education.

Abstract

This study investigates creativity characteristics in elementary school students' drawings through the framework of Viktor Lowenfeld's artistic development theory. Despite extensive research in Western contexts, limited empirical evidence exists regarding children's artistic development in Indonesian elementary schools, particularly concerning how visual elements reflect developmental stages. A qualitative descriptive approach was employed to analyze ten drawings produced by second-grade students at SDN 1 Petobo, Central Sulawesi, Indonesia, during the 2025/2026 academic year. Data were collected through systematic observation of student artwork, semi-structured interviews with teachers and students, and photographic documentation, then analyzed using Miles and Huberman's continuous comparative method focusing on line quality, form characteristics, spatial organization, and color application. Findings reveal that students consistently exhibited schematic stage characteristics including stable visual schemas, baseline spatial organization, geometric form simplification, and representational color usage. Unexpectedly, several students demonstrated nascent depth representation techniques typically associated with later developmental stages, suggesting that contemporary educational environments may accelerate certain artistic competencies. Individual variations in compositional complexity and narrative elaboration were observed within the overall schematic consistency. This research validates Lowenfeld's framework cross-culturally while demonstrating that Indonesian elementary students' artistic development aligns with established developmental patterns, contributing empirical evidence to the literature on children's creativity in non-Western educational contexts and supporting developmentally appropriate art pedagogy.
