Indonesia is a country with a very large population and the trend continues to increase. The North Sumatra region produces the 7th largest volume of waste in Indonesia, with around 882,033 thousand tons of waste generated. Perumnas Mandala is one of the areas in the city of Medan that has a dense population, where the temporary disposal site (TPS) is not far from residential areas. So the problem of waste management arose at the Perumnas Mandala waste landfill, Percut Sei Tuan district. The aim of this research is to determine waste management at TPS Perumnas Mandala Kec.Sei Tuan. This research uses a qualitative approach with descriptive research type. The population in this study were all residents around Perumnas Mandala. The samples in this study were informants, namely the head of waste officers at the Perumnas Mandala TPS, 2 waste officers at the Perumnas Mandala TPS, and several residents around the Perumnas Mandala TPS, namely around 5 communities around the Perumnas Mandala TPS, using a purposive sampling technique. The research results show that waste management at TPS is still not good due to several factors such as lack of waste transportation facilities, lack of waste officers in managing waste at TPS, lack of community habits in sorting types of waste, limited trucks and trucks that are damaged so they stop working. operating waste transportation for 4 months, this has caused the volume of waste to increase at the TPS. The conclusion of this research is that waste management at the Perumnas Mandala TPS is not optimal, it is recommended that the government and the private sector improve facilities and infrastructure as well as collaborate with the community in managing waste well.

Abstract

According to the Ministry of Environment and Forestry, waste is the remainder of a business or activity. Solid waste is residual or discarded material in solid form resulting from various human activities. Deli Serdang Regency produces many opaque chips. Tuntungan II Village is one of the cassava growing center villages in Deli Serdang Regency, North Sumatra Province. The availability of cassava raw materials has implications for community activities with small and medium enterprises. From the initial observation survey of the opaque chips management process, it was found that residual material resulting from production or waste was in solid form. Solid waste arises from the management or disposal of waste from industrial activities. Solid industrial waste can be organic waste or inorganic waste. The aim of this research is to see an overview of solid waste management at the opaque chips factory in Tuntungan II Village, Kutalimbaru Deli Serdang District. The method in this research uses qualitative methods with descriptive research, data collection by direct observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation. The results obtained from this research are that this opaque chips factory produces solid waste in the form of leftover cassava pulp and cassava peel. Cassava pulp and cassava skin will be dried first before being given to farmers as animal feed, this is of course an effort to reduce the impact of waste management so that it does not pollute the surrounding environment. Solid waste at this opaque chips factory is processed well. The suggestion in this research is that the role of the government and the community is to provide outreach to the community and it is hoped that they can supervise work at the opaque chips factory regarding waste management.

Abstract

Environmental sanitation is an important factor in the prevention of diseases, including diarrhea in toddlers. Hamlet III of Rugemuk Village in Deli Serdang has sanitation challenges that can affect public health. The purpose of the study was to determine the relationship between environmental sanitation and the incidence of diarrhea in toddlers in Hamlet III Rugemuk Village, Labu Beach, Deli Serdang. This study is a quantitative study with a cross sectional design, the population of this study is all mothers who have toddlers as many as 107 people. The sampling technique uses simple random sampling with representatives of mothers who have 51 toddlers . This study was analyzed by univariate and bivariate analysis using the chi-square test. The instrument used was a questionnaire. The results of the study found that there was no statistically significant relationship between the type of clean water facilities and the incidence of diarrhea (p-value = 1.103), there was a statistically significant relationship between the condition of family toilet facilities and the incidence of diarrhea (p-value = 0.047), there was a relationship between the condition of eligible waste disposal facilities and the incidence of diarrhea (p-value = 0.006), there was a relationship between the condition of wastewater disposal facilities and incidence of diarrhea (p-value = 0.001). Thus, it can be concluded that family latrines, garbage disposal facilities, and wastewater disposal facilities have a significant relationship with the incidence of diarrhea, while the relationship with clean water facilities is not statistically significant. In an effort to improve environmental sanitation, it is important for the surrounding community to improve family latrines, manage qualified waste and wastewater and carry out effective counseling.
