Abstract

As the global population increases, the need for effective elderly care becomes increasingly urgent. Health cadres play a crucial role in improving the health and well-being of communities. One of the strategies to address this need is training health cadres, who can serve as vital links between healthcare providers and the elderly. In this training program, we aimed to enhance the role of health cadres in elderly care to support the physical, mental, and social well-being of the elderly. Through interactive exercises and providing health cadre pocketbooks, participants learned how to assess the individual needs of the elderly and increase their motivation to visit nearby healthcare facilities, thus improving the health status of the elderly in the region of Nagari Padang Kandis, district of 50 Kota. The activity involved 15 elderly health cadres. This training showed a 25% increase in the cadres' knowledge, as improved pre-test and post-test scores indicated. The health cadres now possess the skills and knowledge to effectively support the elderly community in their environment, fostering an independent and active elderly population in their daily activities and reducing dependence on the productive-age population. Furthermore, this community engagement activity, involving collaboration between the academic community of the Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Andalas, and the Padang Kandis health center, will be conducted periodically to enhance the health status of the local individuals in their society life.

Abstract

The nutritional status of children is currently a global concern, with two million children under the age of five suffering from severe acute malnutrition, a lifethreatening condition if left untreated. Millions of Indonesian children remain at risk due to high rates of stunting and wasting, as well as the double burden of malnutrition, where both undernutrition and overnutrition occur. Globally in 2020 (WHO), 149.2 million children under the age of five (22%) were stunted, 45.4 million children (6.7%) were wasted, and 38.9 million children (5.7%) were overweight. The purpose of this study was to analyze the relationship between complementary feeding practices and parenting patterns with the nutritional status of children aged 6– 24 months in the Pegambiran Health Center working area in Padang City. Study method is a quantitative research method with a cross-sectional study design. The results of the statistical analysis in this study using the chi- square test showed a significant association between complementary feeding practices and the nutritional status of children aged 6– 24 months (p- value = 0.000) and between parenting styles and the nutritional status of children aged 6– 24 months (p- value = 0.000). The conclusion of this study is that there is a relationship between the practice of providing complementary foods and the nutritional status of children aged 6– 24 months.

Abstract

Obesity is recognized as a major global health problem due to its negative impact on quality of life and its strong association with various metabolic disorders. Energy imbalance, defined as a condition in which energy intake consistently exceeds energy expenditure, is considered a central mechanism in the development of obesity. This study aimed to examine the relationship between physical activity, ADRB2 gene polymorphism zygosity (rs1042713), and energy balance among individuals with obesity. A quantitative cross-sectional design was implemented, involving 48 obese participants selected using a total sampling technique. Data were obtained through structured interviews, anthropometric measurements, and genetic testing. Statistical analyses were conducted using the Chi-square test, Fisher’s exact test, and logistic regression analysis. The results indicated a statistically significant association between physical activity and energy balance status (p-value = 0,003). No significant association was identified between ADRB2 gene zygosity and energy balance (p-value = 1,000). The findings highlight the important role of physical activity in preventing excess energy accumulation among obese individuals, while the genetic variation examined did not show a significant contribution in this study. Limitations include the cross-sectional design, which precludes causal inference, and the relatively small sample size, which limits the generalizability of the results. Promotion of an active lifestyle remains a fundamental strategy in adult obesity management.

Abstract

Background: The implementation of the special Maternal and Child Health (MCH) Handbook for small babies has been introduced in several regions in Indonesia. This is because the existing MCH Handbook, which is widely used in Indonesia, has not fully accommodated the needs of mothers and families as a guide for caring for and monitoring small babies. This study aims to analyze the differences in knowledge of mothers with small babies regarding small baby care in areas using and not using the special MCH Handbook for small babies. Methods: This study employed a cross-sectional comparative design. The study was conducted in the working area of Tanjung Paku Public Health Center in Solok City, West Sumatra, Indonesia, as the group using the special MCH Handbook for small babies, and in the working area of Pariaman Public Health Center in Pariaman City, West Sumatra, Indonesia, as the group not using the special MCH Handbook for small babies. The study was conducted from September to October 2024. The required sample size was 46 participants per group, with a total of 92 participants. A simple random sampling technique was used. Data were analyzed using the Mann-Whitney test, with a significance level of P<0.05. Results: The median total score for maternal knowledge about small baby care in areas using the special MCH Handbook was 14, higher than the score of 12 in areas that did not use the handbook. A significant difference was found in maternal knowledge regarding small baby care between areas using and not using the special MCH Handbook (P<0.05). Conclusion: There is a significant difference in the knowledge of mothers with small babies regarding small baby care between areas using and not using the special MCH Handbook for small babies. Strengthening policies and promoting the importance of the special MCH Handbook for small babies is crucial to improving maternal knowledge in small baby care, especially in areas with high rates of preterm births.

Abstract

Our community service activity aimed to increase knowledge and awareness about the dangers of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), known as “forever chemicals,” which are commonly found in household products, food packaging, and cosmetics. Long-term exposure to PFAS has been associated with numerous serious health effects, including an increased risk of several cancers, disruption of hormone homeostasis, liver toxicity, impaired immune function, and adverse reproductive and developmental outcomes.  The participants included housewives and adolescent girls (n = 20) who attended Padang Pasir Community Health Center, East Padang, Padang on 6 September 2025. An interactive educational session was conducted using a pre-test–post-test design to evaluate changes in knowledge and awareness. Analysis of participants who completed both assessments showed an improvement in knowledge following the intervention, with the greatest increases observed in understanding of healthy cooking utensils (50%) and the presence of persistent chemicals in cosmetics (50%). However, evaluation of awareness levels revealed only a minimal increase in median scores (from 57 to 60), which was not statistically significant (p = 0.221). We conclude that a focused educational session is effective in improving participants’ cognitive knowledge, but a more comprehensive and sustained approach is needed to promote meaningful behavioral change and deeper awareness, particularly since practicality and convenience remain major considerations when choosing household products, food packaging, and cosmetics.

Abstract

Background: Down syndrome is a global health problem of particular concern because people with Down syndrome have a wide variety of clinical disorders and are one of the causes of mental retardation and serious physical growth disorders.Down syndrome can occur at all socioeconomic, ethnic and demographic levels. The incidence of Down Syndrome will increase as the mother's age increases at the time of pregnancy and the incidence varies in different populations: 1 in 319 to 1 in 1000 live births. Each year, an estimated 3,000 to 5,000 children are born with Down syndrome. The APOE gene is located in the long arm (q) of chromosome 19 at position 13.2 (19q13.2). The APOE gene consists of four exons and three introns, a total of 3597 base pairs. In melanocyte cells APOE gene expression can be regulated by MITF. APOE is a form of polymorphic, which translates into three gene alleles: normal: allele ?3 and dysfunctional: allele ?2 and allele ?4.  The polymorphism of the APOE gene had a strong effect on the level of allele production, a high concentration of APOE indicated that the production of ?4 allele was increased and a low concentration of APOE was associated with the production of ?2 allelePurpose:To Analyze of Allele Frequency Distribution Apoliprotein E Gene  in Patients With Down Syndrome Trisomy  21Methods: This research is an analitic observasional study with a comparative  study design. The sample used was the result of DNA extraction patients with Down's Syndrome Trisomy 21 as many as 33 samples and 33 controls stored in the Biomedical Laboratory, Faculty of Medicine, Andalas University, Padang, Indonesia. The next step is to examine the APOE gene polymorphisms using PCR and sequencing techniques. Results: Samples of Down syndrome patients had variations in the distribution of alleles, where alleles ?4 and ?2 were found even though the allele frequency ?3 was still the highest allele frequency. Meanwhile, in the samples representing the normal control population, ?3 and ?2 alleles were found and no ?4 allele was found. Although the allele is not associated with Down Syndrome, Down Syndrome sufferers have a 2.26 times greater risk for e2 and e4 alleles than e3.Conclusion: There was a difference in the frequency distribution pattern of the APOE gene allele in patients with Down Trisomy Syndrome 21 compared to the control.
