Abstract

Rabies is a zoonotic fatal disease. The disease infects the central nervous system, known as encephalitis. This study aims were to determine the relationship between the percentage and the factors that influence the maintenance system and the level of public awareness toward rabies in Bangli Regency, Bali. A total of 140 questionnaires were distributed in 14 villages that have never been reported having cases of rabies. Interview data were analyzed using quantitative descriptive analysis and dendrogram. The results showed that a proper dog care system in Bangli associated with dog rearing conditions (100%); provided awareness of the feed (100%); the number of feeding more than one each day (91.4%); rabies vaccination status (83.6%); not keeping other rabies transmitted animals (cat) (75.7%); health inspection status (67.1%); and the number of dogs that were kept not more than one tail (55.7%). Bad dog maintenance systems associated with the type of feed given (100%); contact with other dogs (80%); and system maintenance by way of detachable dogs (73.6%). The level of public understanding in Bangli district was well connected with the mobility of dogs (88.6%); understanding of the dangers of rabies (79.3%); dog origin (79.3%); knowledge of the characteristics of rabies (74.3%); and the village of rabies free status was retained (78.6%). Poor level of public understanding related to the lack of village rules and custom rules relating to rabies (100%); lack of community participation in education programs (62.1%); and how to have dogs (52.1%). Based on the results of this study, its concluded that the maintenance system of dogs and the level of public understanding regarding rabies in Bangli are relatively good. ABSTRAK Rabies adalah penyakit zoonosis yang bersifat mematikan. Penyakit ini menyerang sistem saraf pusat atau encephalitis. Abstract

The aim of the study was to investigate the role of zona pelucida (ZP) as a barrier of embryo againstE.coli K99 contamination.   The complete randomized design was used in this study.  The embryos weregiven treatment as a follow : 1) embryos without ZP were contaminated with E.coli K99;  2) embryo withintact ZP were contaminated with E.coli K99;  and  3) embryos  with intact ZP were not contaminated withE.coli K99, as a control.  In each treatment there was 15 replication and in each replication there was oneembryo.  The embryos were incubated in incubator at 37°C and 5% CO2 atmosphere.  The embryos wereobserved every six hours in 24 hours using inverted microscope.  The result showed that embryos withintact ZP could develop in culture contaminated with  E.coli K99, while embryos without ZP becomedegenerated.  The viability of intact embryos was 75% and the embryos without ZP were 65%.  Embryosculture in contaminated medium could develop from eight cells embryo into morulla stage of embryo, compact morulla, and blastocyst. E.coli K99 contamination could inhibit embryo development.  In conclusion,ZP could protect embryo against E.coli K99 contamination.

Abstract

Ringworm is an infectious skin disease caused by dermatophytes and can infected various of animals, including cattle. This disease is not only able to cause high economic losses in the farm but also zoonotic. The aims of this study were to conduct a preliminary study of ringworm in Bali cattle of especieally toidentify the causes and clinical lesion and also its prevalence. Samples which suspected ringworm werecollected from Badung and Buleleng Regency, Bali Province. Skin lesion of suspected infected by ringwormwere observed, recorded, and documented. Skin scrapings and hair was taken for direct microscopicexamination for the presence of fungal element (hyphae or arthrospora). Skin scrapings and hair sampleswere dropped with KOH 10% and China ink (Parker®) then were left at room temperature for 10-15minutes. Samples were observed by microscope with a magnification of 100X and 400X gradually. Thedata were analyzed descriptively. In skin scraping and hair samples were found fungal elements, butcannot identify the species. Clinical lesions are seen in Bali cattle infected with ringworm include white, gray, or black (hyperpigmentation) circular alopecia accompanied by hyperkeratosis, scale, and crusting.Ringworm prevalence on Bali cattle in Bali is about 1.48%.. The prevalence rates associated with weatherfactors and maintenance system.

Abstract

Bali cattle (Bos (Bibos) banteng) often experience fractures (fractures) of metacarpale, femur bone or tibia-fibular bone. This study was aim to reveal the strength and density of female Bali cattle bone which determines the occurrence of fractures. In order to reveal the strength of bali cattle bones, the elements that need to be explored include: bone density, cortical thickness of tibia bone, bone diameter, and bone resistance to pressure. To determine bone density performed by measuring bone specific graavity, cortical thickness of bone, carried out by splitting the bone by sawing the tibia bone extensively, then measuring the thickness of the wall of the bone cylinder using a caliper. Measurement of bone resistance to pressure was done by weighing the bone with a certain weight until the bone breaks or cracks and then measured by checking in which load the bones breaks or cracks. The result shown that the average density of Bali cow os tibia is 1.95 g/mL, average os tibia diameter is 26.45 mm, os tibia cortical thickness from top, middle, and bottom in sequence are 5.50 mm, 6.25 mm, and 5.35 mm. The result of os tibia compressive strength test is 9.26 Pascal with average load can be hold is 56.75 Newton and average wide of os tibia cross section cut is 6.05 cm2. This study result can be used as representation of Bali cow os tibia strength that has not been widely reported and can be used as recommendation for improvement of female Bali cattle livestock management.

Abstract

Babesiosis is a parasitic disease in red blood cells due to protozoan infection of the genus Babesia which is transmitted through tick vectors. A 5-years-old male German shepherd had decreased appetite, weakness, and infestation of ticks throughout his body. Clinical examination showed Capillary Refill Time (CRT) <2 seconds, pale mouth mucosa, erythema throughout the body, philtrum was dry and slow skin turgor. The results of a complete blood examination of the dog had hyperchromic microcytic anemia and lymphocytopenia, while the results of blood smear showed the existence of intraerythrocyte inclusion bodies. The dog was diagnosed with Babesiosis and treated with Ringer Lactate fluid therapy, administration of Clindamycin (25mg/kg BW; PO), Oxytetracycline (15mg/kg BW; PO), Anti-inflammatory Dexamethasone (0.5-1mg/kg BW; PO) and Hematodine (1ml/5kg BB; IV) given for seven days. After treatment, the dog has increased appetite and after 14 days shows improvement in clinical signs.
