Abstract

This study aimed at exploring the EFL teachers’ pedagogical content knowledge of GBA and English instruction in the Indonesian context. The data were collected from 42 senior high school English teachers by making use of a set of questionnaires, interviews, and observations. The first type of data was analyzed through a response counting to calculate the scores and percentages, with which the categories of teachers’ knowledge were engineered. Meanwhile, the second type of data was analyzed by describing all indicators in the observation checklists (in the forms of spoken cycle and written cycle and four stages of teaching: building knowledge of the field, modeling of the text, joint construction of the text, and independent construction of the text). The data analysis reveals that the English teachers’ pedagogical content knowledge of GBA can be classified into two major groups: 38.1% English teachers had deep knowledge and 61.9% English teachers had shallow knowledge. In connection to the classroom teaching, teachers with these different levels of knowledge are identical in implementing the guidelines of spoken and written cycles. One of the essential implications is that both categories of EFL teachers need to understand theories of GBA and concepts of GBA used in the curriculum more in-depth as the reference and signpost to perform a better classroom teaching.

Abstract

This study aimed to investigate the English as a foreign language (EFL) university teachers’ perspective and their actual applications in providing written corrective feedback to the writing errors made by the EFL university students and their correlation. The study was based on 80 responses of a Google-Form survey distributed to EFL university teachers with various teaching experiences from the most parts of Indonesia. Correlational design was used in this research. Descriptive statistics and Pearson’s correlation tests were used to analyze data. The results indicated that the majority of teachers had perspectives that it is valuable to provide and vary the strategies of written corrective feedback. In addition, the teachers mostly applied both direct and indirect feedback in various strategies and they only sometimes provided corrections in all aspects of errors and reformulation. It was also found out that the Indonesian EFL university teachers’ perspectives in the written corrective on students’ writing errors highly correlated with their actual applications. The results of the study provide both theoretical and pedagogical implications. Theoretically, it enriches the body knowledge of feedback and EFL writing. Pedagogically, EFL teachers are also suggested to improve their knowledge on various feedback techniques and apply it in their classroom teaching and learning process.

Abstract

Abstract: This qualitative survey study investigated the students’ perspectives on the emerging factors of anxiety and enjoyment during ESP class of non-English department students. This study involved 35 freshmen of non-English department study program at Universitas Muhammadiyah Malang who were joining ESP class. The most frequent causes of FLA based on the students’ perception were being afraid that their utterances are not understandable, their own concern on their pronunciation and accent and thoughts that others can speak better than they do. For FLE, the excellent atmosphere created by the teachers was most considered by the students to contribute to their enjoyment in class. Keywords: anxiety, enjoyment, ESP, FLA, FLEAbstrak: Penelitian yang menggunakan metode survey kualitatif ini menggali tentang perspektif mahasiswa di luar jurusan Bahasa Inggris tentang kecemasan (FLA) dan perasaan senang (FLE) dalam mengikuti kelas ESP. Abstract

Abstract: This study aims at investigating the use of hedges and boosters which are important in academic writing discourse as a mean of communicative strategies for increasing or reducing the force of statements. The data of this study were taken from the undergraduate students’ research ar-ticles of English Department at State University of Malang and analyzed based on the taxonomy of Hyland (1998a) and Hinkel (2005). The result showed that there were five types of hedges and three types of boosters. Moreover, the students used greater hedges than boosters in their research arti-cles as a way of reducing the risk of opposition, as a mean of being polite and as a way to obscure their authorial identity while advancing their opinion. However, the writers also used boosters to show their research originality and when they were quite sure that their claims share some universal understanding. Furthermore, the misused hedging devices by the students showed that they lack of knowledge of English rhetoric.
