Abstract

This article discusses how Indonesian English Language Education Students (ELES) apply space lexicalization in narrative composition. This study also discusses how they understand the concept of space lexicalization. Fifteen master’s degree students in English Language Education are the subjects of this study. A convergent parallel mixed-method research design was utilized in this study. The data of this study are a set of tests on space lexicalization and a writing test. The test on space lexicalization is used to investigate the participants’ understanding of space lexicalization’s concept, while the writing test is utilized to investigate how they apply space lexicalization in narrative writing. The results show that the subjects understand the concept of space lexicalization and they can apply space lexicalization in narrative writing. This shows that Indonesian ELES has acquired space lexicalization in narrative writing, although some of them produce grammatical mistakes and incorrect combinations of spatial words.

Abstract

Writing knowledge pertaining to process, system, content, and genre plays an essential role to produce an intelligible composition. The purpose of the present study is twofold – to investigate the correlation between aspects of writing knowledge and quality of writing, and to investigate the contribution of the overall and individual aspects of writing knowledge to writing quality. The participants were 54 second-year ELT undergraduate students of a university in Indonesia. A writing test and multiple-choice test on writing knowledge were used as the instruments of data collection. The analysis employed Pearson correlation coefficient and multiple regressions. The result revealed a significant positive correlation between writing knowledge and writing quality. As a unit, the knowledge of process, system, content, and genre, indicates a significant contribution to the writing quality. Individually, however, only process knowledge significantly contributes to the writing quality. It provides additional pieces of evidence that process knowledge be given special attention, thus writing instruction should allow students to learn writing knowledge explicitly and implicitly.

Abstract

Abstract: This study aims to self-reflect the student-teacher’s (ST’s) scaffolding during her online teaching practicum practice. The self-reflective was conducted in six meetings using a Zoom Application. It utilized a thematic analysis from Braun Clarke (2006). The findings showed that the student-teacher was able to: (1) be aware of her scaffolding drawbacks and improved significantly in the next meetings, (2) improve students’ understanding, (3) conduct appropriate scaffolding learning process by utilizing various graphic organizers and media. While the student teacher was effective in using the scaffolding technique, each theme's improvement path is different. Every meeting is typically used to develop it, and it is acquired in a step-by-step manner.

Abstract

Touching into the gender differences between males and females in expressing the use of exaggeration expressions, this study analyzes the relevant data using the LIWC tool, the HIP method, and the deficit and difference theories. This study found that in relation to the gender stereotypes, both males and females speak differently, yet also demonstrate similarities. Both the male and female subjects express emotions equally in the language production; yet, the negative emotions are dominated by the males, and the positive emotions are dominated by the females. The difference of emotion productions influences the differences in the males’ production of exaggeration expressions, such as empty adjectives, italic expressions, and hyperbole by the female subjects.

Abstract

Abstract: The present research is an analytical study referring to the Quranic English translation. It specifically aims at analyzing the constituent structure of sentence types in Surah Qaf English translation by Muhammad Taqiudin Al Hilali and Muhammad Muhsin Khan. More particularly, this research sets out to identify the sentence types found in the translation and analyze them at the syntactic level. The data for this research are taken from al-quran.info.com, the trusted site for Qur’an online translation and commentary. The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative. Based on the analysis, the findings indicate that four sentence types (declarative, imperative, exclamatory, and interrogative) appear in the Surah Qaf English translation with different number of occurrences. This research is also conducted to find out the constituent structure of each sentence type. The results also show that each sentence type has a distinctive pattern of constituent and grammatical structure. Keywords: syntactic analysis, sentence types, quranic translation Abstrak: Penelitian ini merupakan sebuah studi analitik yang merujuk pada terjemahan Al Quran dalam Bahasa Inggris. Abstract

The use of online platforms has been shown to help students engage in learning writing. The student’s engagement in revising their writing draft can be seen from the interactions between the teacher and the students or among the students. This study aims to determine teacher-student interactions in a writing class conducted synchronously and asynchronously via Google Classroom, Google Meet, and WhatsApp. The data were derived from the teacher’s and students’ discussions posted in written and oral modes in the applications. A qualitative approach in designing and gathering the data was used in this study. The findings show that the interactions between the teacher and the students raised the students’ understanding of the teacher’s instruction so that the students were engaged in writing their drafts and revising them properly. The patterns of the teacher’s interactions can be categorised into giving feedback (39%) followed respectively by prescribing the editor role (17.7%), promoting individual contributions (13.3%), promoting joint construction of meaning and form (11%), thanking and praising (10%), guiding through the writing steps (5.7%) and stimulating students (3.3%). Students’ responses toward the teacher’s patterns of interaction depend on the teacher’s talk. There is no initiative from the students to start the discussion. The student’s background as freshmen can cause this; the first-year students may not be brave enough to start the discussion. This suggests that exploring the interactions between the teacher and students of different backgrounds is necessary.

Abstract

Rhetorical studies thus far have investigated the crucial rhetorical pattern in research discussion. However, those studies have not provided sufficient analyses on Toulmin’s model as a framework to determine arguments’ quality in research discussion. This study aims to investigate the ELE undergraduates’ arguments’ quality that manifested in research discussion. The finding of the study reveals undergraduates’ tend to form almost-complete arguments that consist of four Toulmin arguments elements, namely “Claim”, ”Data”, ”Warrant”, and “Back-Up” while “Qualifier” and “Rebuttal” are missing. This study provides interpretive elaboration of overall quality of the arguments and possible factors that led two elements being disregarded.

Abstract

The Covid-19 pandemic, which hinders various human activities, makes people keep themselves withdrawn from others. The massive social distancing also applies in hospitals, including between patients and nurses in the use of wheelchairs. The issued autonomous wheelchairs must do another task, that is detecting room plates and recognizing room nameplates. The detection in this research uses Faster Regional Convolutional Neural Network (Faster-RCNN) model made on Tensorflow. Meanwhile, room name recognition will actualize using PyTesseract. Testing was carried out on a smart wheelchair prototype using the Raspberry Pi 4B. The hardware integration result of the buzzer_1 function is 100%, the buzzer_2 function is 100%, the buzzer_3 function is 100%, the buzzer_4 function is 100%, the buzzer_5 function is 100%, and the motor function is 100%. While the integration of room plate detection software was 95% and room name recognition was 81%. Then performed image testing to measure accuracy, prediction ratio, and computation time. The results of detection accuracy using Faster-RCNN are 87%, the predictive ratio for recognition using PyTesseract is 77.73%, and the average computation time for detection is 6.825 seconds per image and for recognition of 2.54 seconds per image.

Abstract

The present study focuses on the negotiation of identities of Kwee Thiam Tjing, the author of Indonesia dalem Api dan Bara ‘Indonesia on Fire and Charcoals’. Our study aims to investigate ways in which he responds to others’ positioning and repositions himself to fit in a particular circumstance under certain dominant power. The results show five domains of identities that may be subject to negotiation: linguistic, ethnic, cultural, role, and social identities. We argue that in colonial Indonesia some identities are negotiable while others are forcefully imposed. Kwee’s translingual practice performed both in writing and in daily life has acquired him a space to fully express his non-negotiable identities. Our study shows how his translingual practice serves as a mediational tool to better negotiate identities, especially in a multilingual environment.
