Abstract

Within applied linguistics and foreign language pedagogy, the role of emotions in language learning has been somewhat overshadowed. Addressing this oversight, our study focuses on psychological elements pertinent to English learning stages. We explore the interplay between academic perfectionism, self-efficacy, and language learning burnout. Survey data was collected from 263 English Department students at a university in Malang across the 2nd, 4th, and 6th semesters using structured questionnaires. Notably, while second-semester students showed no significant correlation among these variables, meaningful connections emerged for students in the fourth and sixth semesters. Analysis revealed that, though academic perfectionism plays a role, its impact on burnout is relatively minor compared to self-efficacy. There was a distinct correlation between academic self-efficacy and language learning burnout throughout the English program's progression, with a weaker relationship in the 2nd semester and a stronger one in the 4th and 6th semesters. The results underscore the need for an educational environment that champions growth over mere perfection. Prioritizing stress management, self-reflection, and goal setting is paramount. Furthermore, specialized support is vital to cater to students' shifting needs as they advance academically.

Abstract

The present study focuses on the negotiation of identities of Kwee Thiam Tjing, the author of Indonesia dalem Api dan Bara ‘Indonesia on Fire and Charcoals’. Our study aims to investigate ways in which he responds to others’ positioning and repositions himself to fit in a particular circumstance under certain dominant power. The results show five domains of identities that may be subject to negotiation: linguistic, ethnic, cultural, role, and social identities. We argue that in colonial Indonesia some identities are negotiable while others are forcefully imposed. Kwee’s translingual practice performed both in writing and in daily life has acquired him a space to fully express his non-negotiable identities. Our study shows how his translingual practice serves as a mediational tool to better negotiate identities, especially in a multilingual environment.

Abstract

To unpack the complexities that ELF undergoes within the current methodology of ELT, this study bears down to reveal the challenges of incorporating the two practices presented by the increasing stigma attached to the “correct” use of language. Through a thorough analysis of theories and previous studies, the books and articles that span the years 2020 to 2023 (previous studies) are chosen to explore and comprehend the theories to dismantle the common preconception that influences the integration of ELF into ELT, as well as the principles of ELF that educators should follow along with the framework supporting ELT. It explores how the resilience of current EFL in ELT practices is towards Western English norms and the consequent consequences for both teachers and students. As a result, due to the tendency that is firmly ingrained in the norms of Western English, which has an impact on learning resources and evaluation methods, a shift in the paradigm of ELT practices is needed to accommodate students’ different learning styles, cultural backgrounds, and linguistics origins to ensure that all students have an equal opportunity to learn. At the end of this review paper, suggestions for further research and the implications for policymakers of ELT and EFL English teachers regarding the issues have been made.

Abstract

In research articles published for international reputable journals, the crucial role of abstracts to attract readers, especially reviewers or editors, is not in doubt. The article is expected to not experience direct desk rejection due to non-impressive and persuasive lexical choices in the abstract for further reading. This paper proposes a corpus study to scrutinize ideational grammatical metaphor (IGM) from the abstracts of successfully published articles in four applied linguistic quality indexed Scopus journals (Q1 and Q2) managed by Asian countries. The data were analyzed based on Halliday’s SFL framework focused on the realization of IGM in nominalization and lexical density. The pattern of IGM examined was on the transference of process and quality nominalization through morphological derivations. The findings show that the shift from process to thing dominates the other with many variations of suffixes within the words. In addition, the abstracts’ lexical density results ranged from 45 to 72 percent. Thus, it is suggested that English teachers consider raising students’ awareness of nominalization to produce lexically dense but informative texts in their academic writing classes.

Abstract

Current developments in English Language Teaching (ELT) have heightened the urgent need for intercultural competence as another essential skill in contemporary language education. Today’s EFL teachers are required to possess intercultural competencies to effectively assist students in raising their intercultural awareness. This study aims to examine teachers’ international experiences regarding the development of their intercultural competence, utilizing the developmental model of intercultural sensitivity (DMIS) proposed by Bennett (1986, 2017) as the framework. Through the application of a multiple narrative approach, we analyzed the stories of two higher education teachers, collected via document study and three-cycle interviews. The results demonstrate the complexities of teachers’ intercultural competence development and highlight an important aspect: one’s intercultural progression, as they may flexibly alter based on the situation and condition faced at a given moment.

Abstract

Due to its internationalization agenda, higher education institutions (HEI) in Indonesia adopted English as medium of instruction (EMI) programs despite the absence of a national policy document to regulate EMI. Studies on EMI policy in HEI focused on the effect policy could have on the dominant group and gave less highlight on EMI policy implementation management. This case study examined the management of EMI as language policy at the meso-(institutional) and micro-(classroom) levels. The data sources include the institutional policy document related to the EMI program, and interviews with seven EMI officers and seven EMI teachers at a Technological Institute in Indonesia. Using Spolsky's language management framework for the "sensitizing concept," the result of the thematic analysis of the data shows three major categories of EMI policy management: EMI classroom management mechanism, language-related mechanism, and incentivization mechanism. The EMI teachers practice EMI differently in the classroom. Three teachers used English only, while four teachers used multilingualism for content comprehension. The most highlighted managerial and teaching problems come from the students

Abstract

This study investigates the Willingness to Communicate (WTC) among Indonesian master's students in an English Education program, addressing a significant gap in the literature that has traditionally focused on high school and undergraduate levels. Understanding WTC at the graduate level is crucial, as these students are often expected to demonstrate advanced language skills and effective communication in professional contexts. By focusing on graduate students, this research aims to explore the level of WTC among Indonesian master’s students majoring in English education and the factors that influence it.  Employing a mixed-methods approach, data were collected from students at a public university in East Java using a questionnaire and semi-structured interviews.  Findings reveal that these students exhibit a high level of WTC, largely driven by self-confidence, low anxiety, and strong motivation. The study highlights the significant role of early language learning experiences and supportive learning environments in shaping WTC. Despite its contributions, limitations include a small sample size and a short data collection period, which may impact the generalizability. The implications of this research suggest the need for more tailored pedagogical strategies that enhance communicative confidence in advanced language learners, with recommendations for future research focusing on larger, longitudinal studies.

Abstract

This study aims to investigate the request strategies used by students and their lectur-ers through Instant Messaging (IM) in WhatsApp groups (WAGs). This study used a qualitative research design to analyze the language used by students and their lectur-ers in WAGs. The data was collected through the analysis of WAGs conversations be-tween students and their lecturers. Previous studies have extensively argued that stu-dents are less polite language users when sending texts to their lecturers, and the cur-rent study sought to examine the politeness strategies used by the students. The data analysis was carried out in the light the theory of speech acts proposed by Searle. The findings show that the subjects use certain strategies which contain politeness values. The Indonesian EFL context promotes more direct or indirect request strategies in and between the students and their lecturers. In addition, social power and social distance play a significant role in influencing the use of the strategies by students and lecturers in WAGs.

Abstract

Addressing the issues and challenges of inclusivity and disability content in Indonesian EFL textbooks requires a collaborative effort and commitment among textbook authors, publishers, educators, policymakers, and disability advocates to provide equitable learning opportunities for all students. The first step that can be taken to achieve those goals is evaluating the material of the EFL textbook related to inclusivity and disability as curriculum content in Indonesia. Therefore, this research aimed to identify and critically analyze disability as curriculum content in English as a foreign language (EFL) textbooks used in Indonesia. This research was conducted using a qualitative approach that focuses on content analysis. The data sources in this research are three EFL textbooks entitled “English for Nusantara” published by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology of Indonesia and intended for junior high school (VII, VIII, IX grade) students in Indonesia. The findings of this research show that inclusivity and disability-related content are included in the EFL textbook by being represented in images and text. The textbook represents disability in several categories: gender, age, participation, relations, physical activities, and type of disability. Even though the findings show that the textbook "English for Nusantara" has representation for disability, the amount of representation is limited. In conclusion, the research highlights the need for systemic changes in the way disability is represented in educational materials, which could have a profound impact on the inclusivity of educational environments and the broader social integration of people with disabilities.
