Abstract

The use of online platforms has been shown to help students engage in learning writing. The students engagement in revising their writing draft can be seen from the interactions between the teacher and the students or among the students. This study aims to determine teacher-student interactions in a writing class conducted synchronously and asynchronously via Google Classroom, Google Meet, and WhatsApp. The data were derived from the teachers and students discussions posted in written and oral modes in the applications. A qualitative approach in designing and gathering the data was used in this study. The findings show that the interactions between the teacher and the students raised the students understanding of the teachers instruction so that the students were engaged in writing their drafts and revising them properly. The patterns of the teachers interactions can be categorised into giving feedback (39%) followed respectively by prescribing the editor role (17.7%), promoting individual contributions (13.3%), promoting joint construction of meaning and form (11%), thanking and praising (10%), guiding through the writing steps (5.7%) and stimulating students (3.3%). Students responses toward the teachers patterns of interaction depend on the teachers talk. There is no initiative from the students to start the discussion. The students background as freshmen can cause this; the first-year students may not be brave enough to start the discussion. This suggests that exploring the interactions between the teacher and students of different backgrounds is necessary.

Abstract

English textbooks play a pivotal role in supporting English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learning, particularly for junior high school students. Critical thinking skills are essential for enhancing students’ English language proficiency. This study investigates the representation and frequency of Higher-Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) and Lower-Order Thinking Skills (LOTS) in instructional questions within the Grade VII Indonesian ELT textbook (2017 revised edition) published by Kemendikbud, widely used in Indonesian public schools. Employing a qualitative content analysis approach, this study utilized the revised Bloom’s Taxonomy to analyze the data, which were quantified into percentages and frequencies. Findings reveal a higher prevalence of LOTS compared to HOTS in the textbook’s instructional questions. Consequently, teachers are encouraged to creatively adapt these questions to foster critical thinking. Additionally, future textbook authors should prioritize integrating more HOTS-based questions to enhance students’ critical thinking skills in ELT contexts.

Abstract

In research articles published for international reputable journals, the crucial role of abstracts to attract readers, especially reviewers or editors, is not in doubt. The article is expected to not experience direct desk rejection due to non-impressive and persuasive lexical choices in the abstract for further reading. This paper proposes a corpus study to scrutinize ideational grammatical metaphor (IGM) from the abstracts of successfully published articles in four applied linguistic quality indexed Scopus journals (Q1 and Q2) managed by Asian countries. The data were analyzed based on Halliday’s SFL framework focused on the realization of IGM in nominalization and lexical density. The pattern of IGM examined was on the transference of process and quality nominalization through morphological derivations. The findings show that the shift from process to thing dominates the other with many variations of suffixes within the words. In addition, the abstracts’ lexical density results ranged from 45 to 72 percent. Thus, it is suggested that English teachers consider raising students’ awareness of nominalization to produce lexically dense but informative texts in their academic writing classes.

Abstract

This study delves into the use and impact of fanilect, a specialized form of language, within Taylor Swift’s fandom on TikTok. By employing discourse analysis, it examines the various forms and functions of fanilect in this digital community. The findings reveal four key types of fanilect: jargon, which consists of specific terms and phrases used only within the fan group; intertextual references, where fans incorporate Taylor Swift's lyrics or cultural references into their interactions; routine interactions, such as repeated behaviors or phrases during events or online discussions; and multimodal communication where fans express themselves through a combination of text, images, and videos. Furthermore, the study identifies fanilect's roles in shaping the dynamics within the Swiftie fandom. First, it contributes to identity formation, helping fans identify themselves as part of the community. Second, it establishes power structures, where knowledge of fanilect signifies status within the fandom. Third, fanilect fosters community building by encouraging emotional connections and shared experiences. Lastly, it enhances creative expression, allowing fans to engage with the fandom in varied and artistic ways. This research provides critical insights into how fanilect influences community interactions and identity within Taylor Swift’s fanbase, offering broader implications for understanding linguistic practices in digital fan cultures.

Abstract

This research study investigates students’ perceptions and experiences about using the combined inductive-deductive approach in teaching English grammar in intermediate grammar class. The study employed a mixed methods design to answer the research questions. We used a questionnaire including four aspects according to ARCS Model to answer the first research question through examining the perceptions of 65 university students majoring English. Then five of 65 students were selected to be interviewed to explore their experiences on the combined inductive-deductive approach to answer the second research question. The results of the questionnaire and the interviews reveal that most students prefer the combined approach to teaching English grammar although they have positive perceptions towards the inductive or the deductive approach. The combined approach can provide students with better understanding of grammar and keep them involved and interactive in the learning process. Therefore, this current study suggests that further research should be conducted to investigate the effectiveness of the combined approach in the process of teaching grammar and teachers’ perceptions towards such approach.

Abstract

Despite the growing use of online reading in higher education, particularly among EFL learners, limited study has examined how students differ in their use of reading strategies and the specific challenges they face in online context. Most studies address online reading in general terms, but few examine gender-based perceptions and strategic behaviors in online environments. This study aims to fill the gap by examining the application of metacognitive strategies in online reading focusing on gender differences and the challenges students encounter. A mixed method was employed, involving 100 undergraduate students from non-English departments. Data were gathered using the Online Reading Strategies Inventory (ORSI) and open-ended questionnaires. Findings revealed that both male and female students reported moderate use of metacognitive strategies, with no significant difference in overall strategy selection. However, a gender-related gap was observed in the utilization of support strategies. Additionally, students identified several challenges, including limited engagement with digital features, low literacy skills, and a lack of effective strategy use. The results offer substantial pedagogical implications for English language teaching, emphasizing the need to address students’ difficulties in online reading and to train them in diverse metacognitive strategies to strengthen their reading comprehension, particularly in online contexts.

Abstract

The increasing adoption of content and language integrated learning (CLIL) in educational settings has caught teachers’ interest in using translanguaging as a tool to promote effective teaching and learning. Many studies have discussed translanguaging in CLIL, but limited studies have focused on young learners. This case study aims to explore translanguaging practices and perspectives in the CLIL context. Three teachers at one of the national plus schools in Malang, Indonesia, participated in this study. The data were obtained from classroom observations and interviews and analyzed using a thematic pattern. The results showed that teachers’ teaching practices, if seen from a translanguaging lens, while they were explaining the material, asking questions, giving tasks, and giving feedback to young learners. The reasons why the teachers applied translanguaging were to explain the materials and give advice to students, and to address students’ multilingual backgrounds. The advantages of performing translanguaging were to understand the instruction, explain the difficult materials, bond with students, and improve students’ vocabulary. This study suggests that integrating translanguaging strategies in CLIL might support more inclusive and effective teaching for young multilingual learners.

Abstract

Academic writing articles serve as the medium of communication among scholars to share knowledge and new inquiries and are made in such a way that the idea they deliver is both understandable and accepted. One essential action to accomplish this is by employing metadiscourse markers. Metadiscourse is viewed as an essential element of credible written texts created by students of ESL and native speakers, by which the intelligibility of communication in research articles can be accomplished through suitable discipline conscience, norms, and belief to track the writers’ pathway to academic promotions. Therefore, employing descriptive qualitative approach, this study aims at investigating the utilization of interpersonal metadiscourse markers and their functions in academic writing. Analysing discussion section of research articles written by Indonesian expert writers, the results show that the metadiscourse markers in the articles are found to be similar to the commonly used markers among academic community, including interactive and interactional markers. Moreover, the employment of markers in the articles reveal the functions of them to indicate relation between sentences, involvement of readers, existence of example, limitation of commitment to propositions, emphasis on general practice and certainty, and reference to the writer. HIGHLGHTS: The appropriate utilization of interactive and interactional metadiscourse markers in research articles indicates the international norm of academic writing. The Indonesian expert writer articles fulfill the intelligibility of communication in international research articles. The writing course in the universities needs to emphasize the essential functions of metadiscourse markers.

Abstract

The emergence of coworking spaces have disrupted conventional working lifestyle and built a new trend: shared office space which highlights community-based services. Our paper looks at how this new business promotes their service through advertising language in online media. Advertising language in previous studies have mainly focused on slogans found in printed advertisements (Pratiwi et al., 2019; Dubovičienė & Skorupa, 2014; Niken et al., 2013; Suryasa, 2016), but we focus on headlines in internet advertisements, particularly websites. The headlines were analyzed using linguistic feature theories in four levels: phonological, lexical, syntactic, and semantic levels. The analysis discusses the linguistic features used in the coworking spaces’ home page, the use of the linguistic features in the content, and the effectiveness in attracting readers. Data collected for the study include 59 websites from a coworking space reservation platform, Coworker, and interviews with people involved in the industry. Results of the study show that headlines in coworking space websites prominently use alliteration, noun phrases, and hyperbole. Unlike headlines of printed media, digital media has to comply with search engine optimization (SEO) guidelines so that search engines will index the website properly. HIGHLIGHTS: Linguistic features used in website headlines have several elements in common with headlines in different ad channels, like TVs and printed ads. The main difference between headlines in a digital and printed advertisement is the use of search engine optimization (SEO) strategies in online channels. People’s educational and professional backgrounds can influence how they interpret headlines on websites.
