Abstract

This study aimed to examine the effectiveness of Wattpad as a medium to teach narrative text writing to the tenth-grade students of SMK Negeri 5 Pontianak.  This study was carried out using a pre-experimental study with one group pre and post-test design. The sample of this research was a cluster involving 30 students from Class X Tata Kecantikan I taken from a population of 334 students. The results indicated that the t-test was 12.489. The analysis of the pre-post-test scores indicated that the pre-test was lower than the post-test (71.5<88.3). The t-test analysis showed a greater value compared with the t-table (12.489>2.045) with the degree of freedom 29 and ???? = 0.05. The analysis revealed that the null hypothesis was rejected while the alternative hypothesis is accepted. In addition, the effect size was categorized as a strong effect with the value (2.28>1.00). Therefore, the research referred that the use of Wattpad as a medium to teach students narrative text writing was effective with a strong effect. Despite its initial purpose, Wattpad can be a recommended media to teach tenth-grade students.

Abstract

The research consists of three phases: analyzing, designing, and developing. In the analyzing phase, an English teacher from MAN 2 Pontianak was interviewed, and a questionnaire was distributed to X IPS 3 students. The WKFV was developed using various software tools such as Canva, Vimeo, WordPress, Google Drive, and Google Forms. An internal evaluation was conducted in the development phase to assess the usability of the WKFV. The results of the internal evaluation demonstrated that the WKFV met all the required criteria. In conclusion, the WKFV proves to be a practical and effective tool for supporting the teaching and learning of narrative texts.

Abstract

Educational methodologies have continually evolved to accommodate the diverse needs of learners. One such evolution has seen the rise of game-based learning, aiming to make education more interactive and engaging. This research focused on determining the efficacy of the Jeopardy game in enhancing the understanding of the simple present tense among seventh-grade students at SMP Negeri 7 Sungai Ambawang during the Academic Year 2022/2023. Using a pre-experimental research design, this study delved into the potential advantages of game-based learning over traditional teaching methods. A sample size of 25 students from class VII A was meticulously chosen to ensure the results' consistency and accuracy. To measure the students' grasp of the simple present tense both before and after the Jeopardy game intervention, a multiple-choice test, consisting of 20 items, was administered. Each item in the test offered four options (a, b, c, and d) for students to choose from. Statistical analysis of the gathered data resulted in compelling outcomes. The null hypothesis (H0), which posited that the Jeopardy game would have no significant impact on the students' understanding of the simple present tense, was soundly rejected. In contrast, the alternative hypothesis (Ha), suggesting the game's effectiveness, was accepted. This conclusion was bolstered by a notable t-value of 9.62, surpassing the critical t-table value of 2.064 at 24 degrees of freedom with a 5% significance level. Furthermore, the study highlighted a strong effect size of 1.9, indicating the game's substantial impact on learning.

Abstract

Students completing their studies in the English Education Study Program must be required by thesis writing and submission. It was also acknowledged that the supervisors had afforded proper supervision. Nevertheless, for the English structure of the thesis writing correctness, it still needed help from an application, Grammarly. Therefore, this research aimed to describe the research participant’s engagement and how the application has influenced confidence in writing a thesis, and the confidence is exposed as a case to picture out. To determine which students worked using the application to write their thesis, a questionnaire was distributed to forty students enrolling in the ninth semester of the academic year 2019/2020. The result of the determination found twenty-nine students using the application to refine their writing subjects, and three of them working on their thesis writing completion under supervision using premium Grammarly were selected as the participants for this research. The selection criteria were on the basis of positive attitudes towards Grammarly, working on the thesis writing completion, and possessing a premium Grammarly account. The data of this research were participants’ error types collected from the thesis draft reviewed and their revision, and their opinion of the engagement and influence of Grammarly on writing confidence resulted from the interview. This research revealed that the participant’s thesis writing confidence was influenced by Grammarly diversity. Despite that diversity, as the case, this research inferred that the participants have positive emotions and attitudes in using Grammarly. The implication of this research is the promotion number of Grammarly users in the first-degree study program to make the supervision faster and the thesis writing better.

Abstract

Language’s role in society is pivotal. People utilize language, which includes gesture language and spoken, written, and other forms of structured communication to interact with their surroundings. It is considered flouting the conversational maxims when speakers purposefully stray from the accepted conventions of communication, frequently with a goal in mind. The research objective was to identify the four conversational maxims being flouted in the movie “Turning Red.” The research employed a descriptive research design. The data was gathered through the viewing of the movie and writing down the dialogues in which the characters flouted the four conversational maxims, as well as the types of conversational maxims being flouted, the contexts, the motivations behind the flouting of the conversational maxims, and the implicatures. The results show that four distinct types of conversational maxims are indeed being flouted in the movie “Turning Red”, such as the maxims of quantity with the percentage of 19.5% and the frequency of 7, quality with the percentage of 33.3% and the frequency of 12, relevance with the percentage of 33.3% and the frequency of 12, and manner with the percentage of 13.9% and the frequency of 5. The findings of the research indicate the potentiality of the movie as a medium to learn about pragmatics, especially the flouting of the four conversational maxims, for students.
