The students faced some problems in listening to the narrative text: writing the right vocabulary based on the teacher's pronunciation, identifying important supporting details, and drawing inferences. The purpose of this research was to investigate how the Dictogloss technique improved students'listening comprehension in listening narrative text on the eleventh grade students in class XI IPS 3 of SMAN 5 Pontianak in the academic year 2017/2018. The results showed that the implementation of the dictogloss technique in this research is successful in improving students' listening comprehension in the narrative text, and the implementation of the dictogloss technique not only improves the students' listening comprehension in the narrative text but also changes the students' behavior in teaching and learning process and motivated them. To sum up, the research finding proved that the implementation of the dictogloss technique improved the students' listening comprehension in the narrative text to the eleventh grade students of SMAN 5 Pontianak in the academic year 2017/2018. Keywords: dictogloss technique, listening comprehension, narrative text.

Abstract

The research investigated the correlation between the perception and achievement of the students of English language derivational morphology comprehension. The perception was what was claimed, and the achievement was what was gained. There were primary and secondary data in the research. The primary data were collected by survey, and the secondary data were taken from the mid-test score record documented in the Academic Information System. The survey was implemented by distributing 18 questionnaire statements to 62 respondent students enrolling in English Morphology class. The non-parametric data resulted from the Likert Scale of 1 to 4 options. The perception was interpreted using the index percentage equation, and the interval of percentage was 25. Moreover, the achievement was calculated using the mean score equation. The Pearson Product Moment formula was applied to compute the correlation between perception and achievement. It is revealed that the students’ perception index on the English language derivational morphology is 52,53%, falling into the criteria of 50,01%-75,00% with the category of ‘I get it’. Furthermore, the mean score of student achievement is 76,45 and is categorized as ‘good’, placing in the range of 70,00-79,99. The research concludes that the null hypothesis is accepted, and the perception does not correlate linearly with the achievement of the comprehension of the English language derivational morphology. The correlation coefficient is -0,04365, and the category of the correlation is negligible. Despite the correlation and its category, this research infers that the perception is understandable, and comprehension is achievable.

Abstract

The research aimed to discuss the distinctive features of the Ribun Dayak language. The description of the features was essential to foster the language for future preservation, revitalization, and development. Moreover, the research focused on descriptive analysis of the language’s phonemes. The Ribun Dayak speaks the Ribun language and inhabits sub-districts Tayan Hulu, Parindu, Bonti, and Kembayan, district Sanggau, West Kalimantan. This indigenous language is vital for thousands of speakers residing in a broad zone. In effect, the language needs to be scientifically and linguistically described in terms of phonology through the research. The data collection technique was an interview and recording, and the data collecting tool was the Swadesh lexicostatistics recorded from informants using a voice recorder. Analysis of the data collected signifies that the distinctive features of language’s phonemes are vowels, diphthongs, consonants, and semi-vowels. The vowels are /i/, /u/, /e/, /o/, and /a/, and the diphthongs are <ai> and <au>. Moreover, the consonants consist of plosive, fricative, nasal, trill, and lateral, and the semi-vowel comprises /w/ and /y/. Some phonemes are consonant clusters and compounds. The onset consonant clusters are /mp/, /nt/, /nc/, and /ŋk/, while the codas consonant clusters are /nt/ and /ŋk/. Furthermore, the consonant compounds are /m-p/, /n-t/, /n-c/, /ŋ-k/, /n-s/, and /h-w/. The research also identifies three consonants with two allophones, namely /p/ with [p] and [p’], /t/ with [t] and [t’], and /k/ with [k] and [k’] while the rest only have one. The compound consonants of the language indicate phonologically conditioned interactions with asymmetrical features, which is only with voiceless consonants.

Abstract

This research was conducted to find out whether English Language Exposure Media influence students’ speaking ability or not. This research also concentrated on utilizing different types of English language exposure media within the curriculum, including music videos, podcasts, and songs. All of the media were presented in English language to give them the exposure of the language. A pre-experimental design was utilized, incorporating a pre-test, post-test, and two treatment phases. Data were gathered using a measurement technique that involved a speaking test. The research findings revealed that the pre-test score averaged 54.60, while the post-test score averaged 78.33. The mean score difference between the pre-test and post-test was 25.73, indicating an improvement in students' speaking abilities following the treatments. The effect size (ES) was calculated to be 2.38, which is classified as a strong effect (ES > 1.00). The research demonstrated a substantial improvement in students' speaking ability, with a mean score increase from 54.60 to 78.33, indicating the effectiveness of English language exposure media. Future research could explore the long-term impact of English language exposure media on students' speaking skills. Additionally, examining the effectiveness of different types of media and their influence on various language skills would provide a more comprehensive understanding.

Abstract

This research aimed to help students at SMP Negeri 19 Pontianak improve their speaking skills by applying Cooper’s Modified Think Pair Share Technique, the latest modification of the original Think Pair Share Technique, emphasizing student-centered learning. The focus of improving speaking skills was on procedural text material related to water-saving. Students created texts on four randomly assigned topics, which included washing dishes, washing vehicles, washing clothes, and watering plants. The research employed a classroom action research method with 32 students from class 8D at SMP Negeri 19 Pontianak as the participants. The researcher collected data using observation sheets, field notes, and oral assessments. The study was conducted over two cycles. In Cycle I, students had an average score of 66.44, which increased to 71.72 in Cycle II, exceeding the Learning Objective Accomplishment Criteria (KKTP) of 71. This indicates that Cooper's Modified Think Pair Share Technique effectively enhances students’ speaking skills.
