Abstract

This study aims to assess the level of degradation of palm oil mill effluent (POME) contamination as a medium for growing kale and catfish in a bucket fish cultivation system. This study used a completely randomized design consisting of four treatments and three replications. The treatments in this study were variations in the concentration of POME added to the culture media consisting of Control (0 mg.L-1), A (1,565 mg.L-1), B (2,347 mg.L-1), and C (3,130 mg.L-1). The test fish used were 5-7 cm catfish, 20 fish per bucket obtained from a local BBI, while the kale used was obtained from commercially sold seeds. Budikdamber maintenance time was conducted for 30 days and then analyzed by ANOVA. The parameters examined included the degradation rate of COD, TSS, phosphate, nitrate, and ammonia, pH, DO, and temperature of the cultivation media. The results showed that there was a decrease in COD, phosphate, nitrate and ammonia levels with increasing LCKS concentration, while TSS degradation showed a decrease with increasing POME concentration. The 3,130 mg.L-1 treatment, although showing a significant decrease in DO levels and an increase in pH, was still within the range allowed in fish cultivation. This indicates that the budikdamber system is less effective in decomposing the POME content and maintaining aquaculture water quality parameters.

Abstract

The leaves of Bandotan (Ageratum conyzoides) are a plant thought to have antibacterial properties. This study aims to determine the sensitivity of Bandotan leaf extract in inhibiting the growth of the bacteria Pseudomonas aeruginosa. This study used a stock extract of Bandotan leaves from the Pharmacology Laboratory and a bacterial isolate of P. aeruginosa in the Microbiology Laboratory of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Universitas Syiah Kuala, which was identified by Gram staining, indole test, Methyl Red test, and confectionery test. The research method was carried out by planting the re-identified bacterial isolates on Nutrient Broth (NB) media, incubated at 37ºC for 24 hours. Then the turbidity composition of the isolates was arranged to match the turbidity in 0.5 McFarland solution. Furthermore, the sensitivity test of the extract on Mueller Hinton Agar (MHA) media was carried out by levelling the bacterial isolates on the surface of the media and attaching a disc containing bandotan leaf extract with a concentration of 25%, 50%, 75% and gentamicin disk as a positive control and distilled water as a negative control. All treatments were incubated at 37ºC for 24 hours, and then the inhibition zone was measured using millimeters (mm) callipers. The results showed that concentrations of 25%, 50% and 75%, respectively, had an inhibition zone of 8.16 mm, 9.82 mm, and 16.08 mm, respectively. In contrast, the average inhibition zone for gentamicin was 25, 30 mm and 0 mm distilled water. Therefore, it can be concluded that the Bandotan leaf extract is sensitive to growth inhibition of P. aeruginosa bacteria.

Abstract

Phytoplankton is a bio-indicator of fertility in waters. This study aims to determine the impact of detergent and pesticide waste on the phytoplankton community structure in in tilapia aquaculture media. The phytoplankton identification stage was carried out at the MIPA Laboratory Almuslim University. The parameters studied were phytoplankton abundance, diversity index, uniformity index, dominance index, and water quality parameters. The results of this study showed that detergent and pesticide waste at the end of the study had caused a decrease in the abundance value of phytoplankton by 3,250 individual/L and 3,750 individual/L. In the control treatment, the highest phytoplankton composition was dominated by Chaetoceros sp., while the pesticide and detergent treatments were dominated by Golenkenia sp. and Microcystis sp. Exposure to detergent and pesticide waste reduced the diversity index value, the phytoplankton uniformity index value. At the beginning of the study, it has a moderate diversity index (H '= 2.485–3.072), while at the end of the study it shows low diversity (H' = 2.111–2.375). Furthermore, at the beginning and at the end of the study there was a decrease in the uniformity index value (E = 0.87–1.01) and (H '= 0.88–0.94).

Abstract

Catfish farming is one of the businesses that is very much in demand by the community, because it can improve the community's economy. However, not all catfish farming businesses can produce maximum results. This can be caused by several factors, both from feed, management and water quality. Decrease in water quality can be caused by feces and fish feed residue. Poor water quality can cause the growth process, physiology and level of fish behavior to be disturbed. Efforts that can be done is to use aquatic plants as phytoremediation. The plants used in this study were Azolla sp, Eichhornia crassipes, Lemna sp, Ipomoea aquatic. The design used in this study was a completely randomized design with 4 treatments and 3 replications. The parameters observed in this study were ammonia levels, pH, and plant population. The results showed that Eichhornia crassipes and Lemna sp were able to reduce ammonia levels in catfish cultured water by 0.01 mg/l at the end of the study. Keywords:AmmoniaWater plantsCatfish

Abstract

Brine shrimp (Artemia salina) cytotoxicity assays (BSLT) are one of the commonly used cytotoxic test methods to assess a plant extract's pharmacological activity and toxicity. Thus, this study aimed to examine the toxic levels of Kecubung (Datura metel) leaves extracted using different solvents, namely ethanol and ethyl acetate. The results showed that the LC50 value of flower ethanol, flower ethyl acetate, leaf ethanol, and stem ethyl acetate extracts had an LC50 value 1000, which was included in the toxic category. The LC50 value of flower ethanol is 121.044 ppm, flower ethyl acetate 105.89 ppm, leaf ethanol 639.589 ppm, and stem ethyl acetate 635.276 ppm. Ethanol leaf extract at a concentration of 1000 ppm showed the highest mortality with a percentage of 60% of the total number of A. salina. The flower ethanol extract showed the highest mortality at a concentration of 250 ppm with a percentage of 67% and at a concentration of 1000 ppm with a percentage of 70% of the total number of A. salina. Meanwhile, flower ethyl acetate and stem ethyl acetate extract at a concentration of 1000 ppm obtained 100% mortality of A. salina in the first 6 hours. The result shows that the flower ethyl acetate and stem ethyl acetate extract at a concentration of 1000 ppm is very toxic compared to other concentrations. Keywords:ToxicityArtemia salinaLC50Ethyl acetateEthanol
