Abstract

Located around the Mangrove Production and Protection Forest in Tanjung Harapan Village, Kubu Raya Regency, the Bongkok River quality needs to be studied to determine the quality of the river. This study aims to determine the physicochemical quality of water and the community structure of phytoplankton in the Bongkok River during the dry and rainy seasons. The survey method was used at three stations and 9 observation points in both seasons. Phytoplankton types are identified up to the species level. The physicochemical factors observed included temperature, transparency, water flow, pH, salinity, dissolved oxygen, dissolved carbon dioxide, and levels of nitrate and phosphate. The community structure is seen from the abundance, diversity, uniformity, and dominance index values. From a physicochemical perspective, the Bongkok River is a brackish water type with relatively low levels of phosphate and nitrate nutrients and high dissolved CO2, but dissolved oxygen is still good enough to support aquatic life. There are 41 phytoplankton species from 6 classes, including Bacillariophyceae, Chlorophyceae, Cyanophyceae, Dinophyceae, Euglenaphyceae, and Xanthophyceae. The phytoplankton abundance in the dry season is higher than in the rainy season but is still at a low to moderate level. The phytoplankton diversity in the Bongkok River is in the medium category (2.46 – 2.67) but has a high evenness (0.72-0.89) and low dominance (0.11-0.18). Overall, the water conditions in the Bongkok River are sufficient to support the life of aquatic biota. However, the abundance of phytoplankton is still at a low to moderate level, especially during the rainy season.

Abstract

The position of the leaves on each plant can affect the thickness of the leaf tissue. This study aims to determine the thickness of the leaf tissue at the base and shoot positions. The study used a nested design model (random nesting pattern design). This design uses two factors, the first factor is the leaves of six types of monocot ornamental plants, namely adam hawa (Rhoeo discolor), daffodils (Hymenocallis littoralis), hanjuang (Cordyline fructicosa), lilies of paris (Chlorophytum laxum), song india (Dracaena reflexa) and sri fortune (Aglaonema commutatum), while the second factor was leaf position (base and shoot) with three replications. The method of making leaf preserved preparations is paraffin which refers to Johansen. Parameters measured were total leaf thickness, upper epidermis, lower epidermis, mesophyll (palisade and sponge). Data were analyzed with ANOVA followed by LSD if the factor results were significant. The correlation was made between the total leaf thickness and the tissue which was significant on the leaf position factor. The results showed that the type of plant affected the total leaf thickness, upper and lower epidermis, mesophyll (palisade and sponge). However, leaf position has no effect on the thickness of the upper epidermis and sponge for differentiated mesophyll. The thickness of the leaf depends on the thickness of the lower epidermis, followed by the thickness of the mesophyll or palisade for differentiated mesophyll.

Abstract

The different levels of light intensity affect the anatomical thickness of monocotyledon ornamental plant leaves. The aim of this research was to determine the anatomical thickness of several monocotyledon ornamental plant leaves under different light intensities. The research used a factorial complete randomized design with two main factors, namely plant type and different light intensity, repeated three times. The first factor was the plant type, which consisted of six plant species of monocotyledon ornamental plants which were Chlorophytum laxum, Dracaena reflexa, Rhoeo discolor, Aglaonema commutatum, Cordyline fruticosa and Hymenocallis littoralis. The second factor was light intensity, which consisted of high light intensity (open areas) and low light intensity (shaded areas). The observation was carried out on preserved leaf anatomy made using the paraffin method with modification. The observation variables were the total thickness of the leaf, upper and lower epidermis, mesophyll (for undifferentiated mesophyll), and palisade and sponge (for differentiated mesophyll). Data were analyzed using analysis of variance followed by the LSD test if the treatment was significant. Correlation tests were carried out between total leaf thickness and each leaf anatomical part under conditions of high and low light intensity. The results showed that the interaction between plant types and light intensity influenced the total thickness of the leaves, upper and lower epidermis, and palisade. The plant types independently influenced the mesophyll and sponges, while the light intensity independently influenced only the mesophyll but not the sponge thickness. Hymenocallis littoralis was the only plant that showed thicker under low light intensity, with an increase in the thickness of the upper and lower epidermis. The palisade mainly influenced leaf thickness changes in the differentiated mesophyll.

Abstract

Teluk Nibung River in Batu Ampar District, Kubu Raya Regency is a transportation route for Mangrove Production Forests and a traditional fishing area for local communities. The community structure of phytoplankton in the Teluk Nibung River has never been reported. As the main producer in the waters food chain, the structure community of phytoplankton indicates the quality of the fertility of the waters. The community structure of phytoplankton can be identified by measuring the index of abundance, diversity, evenness and dominance. The survey method was used at three stations in dry and rainy seasons. Sample collection is using net plankton (30 µm) and preserved in 4% formalin. The physico-chemical factors measured included temperature, pH, brightness, current velocity, salinity, dissolved oxygen and CO2, phosphate and nitrate. Once identified, phytoplankton calculations are performed to obtain abundance, diversity, evenness, and dominance values. The species number of phytoplankton found was 56 classified into 6 classes, namely Bacillariophyceae (34 species), Dinophyceae (12 species), Chlorophyceae (4 species), Cyanophyceae (3 species), Xantophyceae (1 species), and Euglenophyceae (2 species). The highest abundance of phytoplankton was in the Bacillariophyceae class with a range of 583 Ind./L at Station 2 in the rainy season to 3.922 Ind./L at Station 3 in the dry season. The diversity index at the three stations and both seasons is in the moderate category with a range of 2.31-2.46. The evenness index at the three stations and both seasons is in the high category with a range of 0.67-0.73. Low dominance level was found at the three stations and both seasons with values ranging from 0.14 to 0.19. Overall, the community structure of the phytoplankton in the Teluk Nibung River is in relatively good condition and can support the life of the aquatic biota in it.
