Abstract

This study aims to describe elementary students’ procedural fluency in solving fraction addition problems using the built-in definition fraction media. Fraction operations are often challenging for students, particularly when determining common denominators and applying calculation procedures accurately. These difficulties are commonly associated with weak procedural understanding and limited opportunities to use concrete learning media. This descriptive study involved 30 fourth-grade students from SDN 204 Palembang who had previously learned basic fraction concepts. Data were collected through a written test consisting of three levels of procedural fluency tasks and supported by interviews to explore students’ reasoning processes. The results show that 47% of students were able to solve fraction addition problems with denominators (Level 1), 33% managed tasks involving adjustment of one denominator (Level 2), and only 13% successfully solved problems requiring the determination of the least common multiple of denominators (Level 3). These findings indicate that students’ procedural fluency development is not linear but constrained at transition points from concrete visual manipulation to abstract procedural reasoning. While the built-in definition fraction media effectively supported early procedural stages by strengthening visual–procedural connections, it was less effective in facilitating higher-level abstraction required for complex fraction operations. The study contributes to procedural fluency literature by identifying specific procedural transition points where students begin to experience difficulties.

Abstract

This research aims to develop a Local Instructional Theory (LIT) for teaching the concept of derivatives through internalization using the real-life context of climate change. It employed a three-phase design strategy: (1) the development of a Hypothetical Learning Trajectory (HLT); (2) teaching experiments conducted with 5 students in pilot experiments and 37 Grade 11 students in final experiment; and (3) a retrospective analysis. Data was collected through observations of classroom interactions, student worksheets, tests, interviews, and field notes. The retrospective analysis involved comparing the actual learning processes to the HLT. The results indicate that students' perceptions of the derivative developed through three fundamental activities: (1) amount of change and instantaneous rate; (2) rates of change, where the derivative was introduced as a tool for understanding instantaneous changes; and (3) prediction, in which students used derivatives to forecast future climatic patterns. These exercises helped students to conceptually understand the derivative as a measure of instantaneous rate of change, while also promoting mathematical modeling and environmental awareness. The resulting LIT offers a pragmatically based approach to conveying the concept of calculus in contextualized and provides practical implications for the construction of curricula and the teaching of mathematics at the secondary school level.

Abstract

This study addresses the challenge of students limited conceptual understanding of fractions by developing a physical manipulative called the Built-in Definition of Fraction (BDF). Using design research developmental studies, data were collected through written tests, questionnaires, and interviews. A total of 41 fifth-grade students participated in the study. The BDF and its accompanying student worksheet integrate dual visual-symbolic representations, that link each concrete action to its corresponding fraction notation and scaffold students in constructing their own understanding of fractions, offering a new approach to using fraction manipulatives. Validation results show that the manipulative is valid, practical, and effective in supporting student understanding of basic fraction concepts, equivalent fractions, and same-denominator addition, even with minimal teacher guidance. Student performance was high across visual-concrete tasks. However, a noticeable gap emerged in unlike-denominator addition between visual concrete performance (88%) and formal-symbolic procedures (77%). This finding highlights the need for additional scaffolding to help students transition more smoothly from concrete representations to abstract symbolic reasoning.

Abstract

Pendahuluan: Pembelajaran matematika masih didominasi oleh soal-soal yang bersifat prosedural, sementara kemampuan siswa dalam memecahkan masalah kontekstual dan membangun model matematika masih rendah. Studi ini bertujuan untuk meningkatkan kompetensi profesionalisme guru matematika SMP dalam menyusun soal pemodelan matematika. Metode: Analisis kebutuhan, pelatihan, dan pendampingan dalam menyusun soal pemodelan matematika yang dilakukan secara luring dan daring. Hasil: Adanya peningkatan pemahaman konsep pemodelan matematika sebesar 93,3% dan 11  peningkatan dalam menyusun soal pemodelan matematika sebesar 73,3%. Kesimpulan: Pelatihan ini efektif dalam meningkatkan pemahaman konseptual guru akan pemodelan matematika dan keterampilan guru dalam merancang soal pemodelan matematika.
