Abstract

Mathematical modeling is key in helping students connect abstract mathematics with real-life situations by transforming practical problems into mathematical forms, solving them analytically, and interpreting solutions in context. This study investigates junior high school students' mathematical modeling abilities in solving PISA tasks on Uncertainty and Data, analyzed through the OECD (2018) framework of formulating, employing, interpreting, and evaluating. Employing a descriptive qualitative approach, we collected data through written tests and follow-up interviews with seventh-grade students. Findings reveal that students show moderate ability in employing mathematical procedures (50.2%) but struggle with formulating problems (45.3%). Most critically, they demonstrate significant difficulties in interpreting (33.7%) and evaluating (28.5%) solutions within real-world contexts, impairing their ability to apply mathematics practically. Qualitative analysis of written tests and interviews shows that students often develop mental strategies but fail to articulate them in writing. These findings underscore the critical need to strengthen higher-order modeling skills in instructional practices, particularly interpretation, evaluation, and mathematical communication. The study reveals essential gaps between procedural competence and practical application, suggesting that curriculum reforms should emphasize problem-solving approaches to develop mathematical modeling abilities that meet PISA’s standards.

Abstract

Realistics Mathematics Education (RME) is an instructional approach that emphasizes the use of real-world problems and situations in mathematics teaching. This method is believed to significantly enhance students' mathematical literacy, which is crucial for their academic and everyday problem-solving skills. This systematic literature review aims to investigate the impact of RME on students' mathematical literacy by synthesizing existing research findings. A systematic review design was employed, focusing on studies that explore the relationship between RME and mathematical literacy. The Scopus database was utilized for bibliometric analysis, with the search term "mathematical literacy" restricted to article titles. Data extracted included author names, citation counts, titles, publication years, sources, publishers, and document types. The analysis revealed approximately total of 200 publications related to mathematical literacy were found with a total of 10,817 citations, resulting in an average of 54.1 citations per article, indicating a substantial body of research on this topic. Notable trends included the integration of computer-mediated learning and various pedagogical models. The findings suggest that RME is an effective pedagogical approach that promotes students' mathematical literacy through authentic and contextualized learning experiences. This review highlights the necessity of developing educational materials and teaching strategies that prioritize mathematical literacy, thereby enhancing students' proficiency in mathematics and preparing them for real-world applications.

Abstract

By modeling learning students enjoy learning and doing mathematics in new ways. This study aimed firsly to produce senior high school mathematics modeling tasks, lesson plan, and student worksheet for valid mathematical learning; secondly, to produce senior high school mathematics modeling, lesson plan, and student worksheet for practical mathematics learning; lastly, to produce senior high school mathematics modeling tasks, lesson plan, and student worksheet for potentially effective mathematics learning. This study used method of development research that consisting of 3 steps, i.e., analysis, design, and evaluation. In the analysis stage, researcher did student analysis, curriculum, and mathematical modeling. Second stage are to design and product. Finally, researchers applied a design of formative evaluation consists of self-evaluation, one-to-one, experts review, small group, and field test. Based on experts review, one-to-one, small groups, and field test were obtained valid, practical, and potentially effective, i.e. mathematical modeling tasks, lesson plan, student worksheet to teach mathematical modeling in senior high school and Mathematical modeling tasks and student worksheets to learn mathematical modeling in senior high school.

Abstract

Background: Mathematical modeling is an important skill in mathematics education, helping students use math to solve real-world problems. Teaching and assessing this skill can be challenging, especially when students need to apply algebraic concepts in their models.Aim: This study aims to assess the ability of high school students to model mathematical problems related to weight changes using arithmetic sequences. The focus is on how well students can understand the problem, identify relevant mathematical concepts, apply these concepts, and explain their results.Method: The study involved 28 high school students who were given two open-ended modeling tasks. A qualitative descriptive approach was used to analyze how students performed in four key stages of mathematical modeling: understanding the problem, identifying mathematical concepts, applying mathematical procedures, and explaining the results. Results: The results showed that 79% of the students reached the minimum proficiency level in mathematical modeling. Students performed very well in understanding the problem (94.05%) and identifying relevant mathematical concepts (90.48%), but had more difficulty in applying these concepts, especially in algebraic calculations (71.43%). This suggests that more attention is needed in teaching algebra within modeling tasks. Conclusion: The study highlights the benefits of using real-world contexts to improve students' mathematical modeling skills. However, it also points out the need to strengthen students' understanding of algebra to help them apply mathematical concepts more effectively. Integrating more mathematical modeling into the curriculum could better prepare students to solve complex real-world problems.

Abstract

Purpose: This study aimed to develop and evaluate culturally contextualized student worksheets that integrate mathematical modeling with ethnomathematical elements from the Bidar Boat Festival. The goal was to enhance students’ modeling competencies and engagement. Method: The research employed a design-based research (DBR) approach, consisting of a preliminary study and a formative evaluation phase through iterative prototyping. Data collection involved expert validation, classroom observations, student interviews, and written assessments across three cycles with 24 junior high school students. Findings: The developed worksheets were found to be highly valid and practical. Students demonstrated strong performance on key modeling competencies: 97.5% understood the tasks, 93.54% translated real-life contexts into mathematical models, 81.88% applied mathematical operations accurately, and 80.42% interpreted results appropriately. Additionally, the learning tools enhanced student motivation, cultural awareness, and mathematical understanding. Significance: Embedding local cultural contexts, such as the Bidar Boat Festival, into mathematics instruction can bridge abstract mathematical concepts with students' lived experiences. The approach not only improved cognitive learning outcomes but also encouraged reflective thinking and cultural appreciation. The study contributes a replicable model for implementing culturally responsive, competency-based mathematics education.
