Abstract

The following study describes Colombia's nation branding practice that was implemented during Juan Manuel Santos' administration in 2010-2018. Colombia itself is a country located in South America that is often associated with a rather negative image and perception due to three critical issues that happened within the country: drug trafficking, insecurity and corruption. In order to create a positive image of its country, Colombia later implemented its own nation branding strategy through the "La Respuesta es Colombia" campaign. Researcher used constructivism as a perspective and the theory of nation branding strategy that was proposed by Keith Dinnie in this following study. The theory itself explains the strategies that are commonly used by a country in their nation branding campaign. Data were gathered using a qualitative research approach and document analysis method. Through those approaches, researcher gathered data that were found in books, academic publications, public documents and digital archives related to the issues that are being researched. This study shows that Colombia practiced its nation branding by releasing an advertisement that was aired in a few foreign television stations, digital and social media usage, appointing nation brand ambassadors and weaving a cooperation between stakeholders and local businesses. This nation branding campaign helps promote Colombia internationally through creating a positive, comprehensive and competitive image of the country in issues like cultures, environments, exports, tourism and investments. Keywords: Nation Branding, Nation Branding Strategy, Image, Perception, Colombia, La Respuesta es Colombia.

Abstract

This research analysed New Zealand’s responses towards China’s geopolitical approach in Oceania particularly in the year of 2014 until 2019. China, who is intensifying its approach to countries in Oceania, is creating political problems for New Zealand. These political problems consist of the disruption of New Zealand’s interests. As a small country, New Zealand has its own strategy in response to China’s approach. New Zealand employs its hedging strategy in the spectrum of economic pragmatism where New Zealand seeks to meet its interests without causing significant damage. This research is conducted by using the descriptive qualitative method with document analysis as its data collecting method. Document analysis is done by evaluating documents such as books, journals, press releases, news, and government publications. This research used the Neorealism perspective and hedging theory. This theory explains countries’ response of hedging toward political problems. This paper showed that, in accordance with the hedging theory, New Zealand's response to its political problem towards China is by maximizing its economic benefits using economic pragmatism strategy. This strategy can be seen from some of New Zealand’s actions such as Joint Statement between New Zealand and the People’s Republic of China on the Establishment of a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, signing of Belt and Road Initiative’s MoA, and renewal of FTA between China and New Zealand. New Zealand’s actions show its intentions towards continuing its economic relation with China in the future. Therefore, it can be seen that with regard to its political problems with China, New Zealand chooses to defend its economic interests. Keywords: Hedging, Economic Pragmatism, China’s Geopolitical Approach, New Zealand’s Interest.

Abstract

Abstract

The government of Indonesia through the Ministry of Finance issued Ministerial Regulation number 10/PMK.010/2021 concerning the Imposition of Safeguard Measure Import Duty (BMTP) on the Import of Carpet Products and Other Textile Floor Coverings. Based on data from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) in the last three years (2017-2019), there has been an increase in the volume of imports of carpets and other textile floor coverings with a trend of 25.2 percent. BMTP is imposed with the aim of facilitating domestic producers or industries experiencing serious losses or threats of serious losses to make the necessary adjustments. This research is theoretically constructed using a mercantilism perspective and is supported by safeguards theory. The formulation of all arguments, data, facts, and theoretical framework in this study uses a qualitative description method. This study also uses the nation-state as a level of analysis. The result of this research show import value data from 2021 to 2022 shows that the BMTP for carpets and other textile floor coverings has not been able to suppress the number of exports from China that enter. The volume of imported carpets based on weight in kilograms from 2021 to 2022 tends to increase around 581,281. Therefore, the BMTP does not reduce the import value of Carpet and Other Textile Floor Covering Products. Keywords: BMTP, carpet products and other textile floor coverings, security measures

Abstract

Abstract

The death of an Iranian female activist, Mahsa Amini, after being arrested by Iran's moral police for not wearing the headscarf prompted demonstrations by the Iranian people in September in 2022. One of the non-governmental organizations that participated in raising aid for the death of Mahsa Amini is Iran Human Rights (IHR). IHR is a non-governmental organization based in Oslo, Norway that focuses on human rights in Iran. This study uses the perspective of constructivism and the theory of non-governmental organizations by Lewis Kanji as a basic reference for the research to clarify the role of Iran Human Rights in gathering support for the death of Mahsa Amini. The analysis was conducted by examining books, official journal publications, documents, and news. The results of the study show that to garner support for the case of Mahsa Amini's death, Iran Human Rights carries out an advocacy role, for example creating campaigns, publishing reports and statements, coordinating other human rights organizations, and encouraging diplomatic action. While the operational function plays a role in providing support to the Mahsa Amini family. Despite facing challenges in its implementation, ranging from limited access to information, an unfair justice system, to repression by human rights activists, IHR has proven that they are able to garner support and fight for human rights in Iran for the Amini case by relying on the cooperation of international human rights organizations, advocacy networks, the media, and individuals. Keywords: Iran Human Rights, Mahsa Amini, Islamic Republic of Iran
