Abstract

This research aims to translate the book Nazm Waraqat by Shaikh Syarif al-Din Yahya al-'Imriti (890 H), from the Surau Simaung collection, West Sumatra, using the semantic translation method. The purpose of this study is to understand the application of the semantic method in the translation process, the translation techniques used, and to produce a better translation. This study has used descriptive qualitative method. The results show that the application of the semantic method is effective in maintaining the meaning, nuances, and original style of the source text while preserving the poetic style of the nazm (verse). The manuscript analysis found 145 copying errors, including additions, omissions, alterations, and substitutions, indicating the importance of editing the manuscript prior to translation. The use of Molina and Albir's translation techniques, such as borrowing and amplification successfully addressed the challenges in translating specific terms in Usul al-Fiqh. A comparison with previous translations reveals that the semantic method is more accurate in conveying the original meaning and preserving the nazm style. more effective in translating Kitab Nazm Waraqat, as it conveys the original meaning while preserving the characteristics of the nazam. This research results in an improved translation and contributes to the preservation of ancient Islamic Nusantara manuscripts.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to describe the translation techniques used in translating educational news on Adengad.Net as an effort to improve the quality of ChatGPT translation results. Along with the development of technology and the increasing need for accurate and efficient translation. The method used is qualitative method by using the theory of translation techniques by Molina Albir and the theory of translation quality by Nababan. This study evaluates the improvement of translation quality, context accuracy, as well as text readability and acceptability. The analysis of 10 education news on Adengad.Net channel found 8 out of 18 translation techniques classified by Molina and Albir, with literal equivalence and modulation being the most frequently used techniques at 31 and 22 times respectively. The evaluation of translation quality involving three students of the Tarjamah study program recorded an accuracy score of 2.53, acceptability of 2.37, and readability of 2.47, with a final weighted average of 2.47. The findings show that the translations produced by ChatGPT are generally accurate, acceptable and comprehensible. This study can broaden the knowledge of the application of translation techniques in visual media and provide practical guidance for translation practitioners and enthusiasts.

Abstract

This study presents an in-depth analysis of the morphonosemantics process in Javanese onomatopoeia by applying the theoretical framework developed by Fitriana (2022) for Japanese mimetic language. Using a descriptive qualitative approach, data on onomatopoeia and its derivatives were collected from a corpus of contemporary Javanese magazines. This analysis, which focuses on the interaction between form and meaning, reveals that Javanese systematically utilizes phonological transformations and morphological processes to encode gradations of meaning. The main findings show that phonological alternations, particularly shifts in vowel quality (e.g., from front-high vowels to back-low vowels), consistently correlate with augmentative changes in size, mass, and strength. Meanwhile, morphological processes such as infixation (e.g., the insertion -um-), reduplication, and prenasalization systematically intensify the duration, repetition, or strength of an action or state. This detailed analysis of over 483 onomatopoeic forms contributes to the documentation of a threatened language variety and enriches the understanding of iconicity in minority languages. The study highlights the systematic relationship between phonological changes and semantic shifts in Javanese onomatopoeia, demonstrating its cultural and linguistic significance.

Abstract

This research aims to analyze the translation strategies and evaluate the translation quality of Mausū‘atu al-I‘jāzi al-‘Ilmī by Masturi Irham, particularly in the chapter discussing human creation. This study employs a descriptive qualitative approach using content analysis. The data were analyzed based on the translation strategies theory of Suryawinata and Hariyanto and Nababan’s translation quality model, which includes three aspects: accuracy, acceptability, and readability.The findings show that the most dominant strategy used is ḥadzf (34.17%), followed by ziyādah (31.15%), taqdīm wa ta’khīr (19.60%), and tabdīl (15.08%). In general, the translation quality is relatively good, with average scores of 2.84 for accuracy, 2.72 for acceptability, and 2.79 for readability. However, several mistranslations and sentence structure issues were found, which may affect the readers' comprehension. Thus, careful attention is needed when translating scientific and theological terms to preserve the original meaning. This study highlights the importance of mastering both Islamic and scientific knowledge in translating texts related to i‘jāz ‘ilmī.

The Arabic dialogues and their Indonesian subtitles are transcribed and analysed to identify illocutionary speech acts. John Searle's theory is applied to examine the categories and functions of these speech acts in the Masameer County episodes "Ice Cream" and "Washingtonia".Results: Out of 443 utterances, 269 were identified as illocutionary speech acts. Representatives predominated with 153 data, such as claiming and describing, followed by directives with 94 data, including commanding and requesting. Commissive (14 data) and expressive (8 data) appeared less frequently, with promising and regretting being the most common within these categories. Declarative speech acts were not found, indicating the narrative's focus on personal interaction.Implications: The dominance of representatives and directive speech acts suggests that the communication style in Masameer County primarily revolves around the core functions of human interaction. This finding affirms the universal relevance of Searle's theory of illocutionary speech acts in analysing animated media.

Abstract

Folklore is a local wisdom that contains many Indonesian cultural values. Many folk tales tell stories about people's lives and tell history or societal figures, accompanied by values that are very good if taught in schools. Acehnese folklore is a form of oral literature transmitted by word of mouth, containing messages or advice from experiences or natural events linked to events experienced by humans, ancestors, or pious people at that time. This research aims to describe the values of character education in the Acehnese folklore Banta Barensyah. This story is full of character education values from which many lessons can be learned to become role models for today's young generation. The story of the hard work and love between parents and children is so beautifully described, right up to the story's happy ending. This research uses a qualitative descriptive method, with data collection techniques in the form of listening and note-taking techniques, as well as data analysis techniques in the form of content analysis. Based on the study carried out, there are 13 educational character values in this folklore, including: 1) religiosity; 2) honesty; 3) hard work; 4) creativity; 5) independent; 6) democratic; 7) curiosity; 8) national spirit; 9) appreciates achevements; 10) friendly/communicative; 11) love of peace; 12) social care; and 13) responsibility. So, it can be concluded that the Acehnese folklore Banta Barensyah is very good to use as teaching material for Indonesians and schools.

Abstract

Artikel ini mendeskripsikan komunikasi Spiritual pembaca Mantra dengan Tuhannya. Ngaben Tradisional Bali adalah interaksi pemimpin agama Hindu kepada Tuhannya melalui mantra. Permasalahan penelitian ini terungkap bahwa  orang yang telah meninggal dunia harus tetap dibimbing oleh Atma (Roh) untuk mencapai Moksa (Surga); 2) Prosesi Ngaben yang dilakukan tidak boleh asal-asalan karena sudah ada tahapan yang harus dilalui; 3) Mantra-mantra yang dibacakan dalam setiap tahap Kremasi bukan sekedar kata-kata kosong yang tidak memiliki makna tetapi semua Mantra yang diucapkan masing-masing memiliki makna Spiritualnya sendiri. Pendekatan penelitian deskriptif kualitatif, sumber data penelitian adalah dua Tokoh Agama yang memimpin Prosesi Kremasi dari Desa Werdhi Agung, Kecamatan Dumoga Tengah, Kabupaten Bolaang Mongondow. Untuk mengumpulkan data dengan metode observasi dan wawancara mendalam. Ditemukan bahwa 1) pemimpin agama melakukan kreamasi  setiap tahap melalui Mantra,ia dapat mandat dari pemerintah. 2) semua makna dalam mantra yang diucapkan dalam prosesi kremasi, lebih menekankan pengampunan, diawali pesan keluarga, dan hidup kembali menjadi manusia lebih baik dari sebelumnya. Sedangkan pesan keluarga disampaikan oleh pemimpin keluarga kepada ruh Mayat disebut komunikasi transedental.

Abstract

This study examines the representation of patriotic, social, economic, and political values in the lyrics of Qasidah Nahdliyah by KH Afifuddin Muhajir, and its role as a medium of cultural da’wah and the construction of the Islam Nusantara ideology. An interdisciplinary qualitative approach was employed, integrating Systemic Functional Linguistics theory (transitivity analysis) and Critical Discourse Analysis within the framework of national history and pesantren culture. Data in the form of song lyrics were analyzed textually. The findings reveal a dominance of material processes that represent Nahdlatul Ulama’s active role in safeguarding Islamic creed, strengthening social solidarity, and responding to contemporary challenges. Religious symbolism in the text underscores NU’s role as a spiritual guardian and protector of inclusive nationalism. This Qasidah is positioned as a religious expression and an ideological vehicle that supports moderate Islam and cultural nationalism while rejecting socio-political fragmentation. The study’s limitation lies in the lack of analysis of multimodal aspects and audience reception. This research contributes to strengthening linguistic analysis of religious discourse in the context of Indonesian Islamic cultural artifacts.

Abstract

This study aims to identify linguistic expressions on utterances used in communication during ruqyah sharia happening. It is conducted using a pragmatic perspective and the descriptive qualitative method in analyzing data. Data from this research got from Youtube during the treatment of ruqyah sharia. This study used maxim theory to test the use of the cooperative principles among them during ruqyah sharia so we can get a system of the cooperative principle which is violated or obeyed by them. Based on findings and discussion, it can be seen the following. There are some conversations which violated by Ustadz and the patient conversation. There are about 2% violated the maxim of manner, 8% violated the maxim of relation, 5% violated the maxim of quality, and 3% violated the maxim of quantity. Some conversations are obeyed, namely 40 % obeyed the maxim of manner, 16 % obeyed the maxim of relation, 34% obeyed the maxim of quality, and 10 % obeyed the maxim of quantity. Based on these findings, it can be concluded that in ruqyah sharia, the theory of Grice (1975) about the cooperative principle can be tested in the use of the cooperative principle between ustadz and patients in the Indonesian context. Although the patient did not aware of his conversation, he can make good cooperative principles with Ustadz so the conversation can go smoothly and both speakers understand their conversation.
