Abstract

Abstract

This study examines the use of speech acts by Indonesian adolescents in digital communication, particularly through comments on social media platforms such as Instagram and TikTok. The study aims to identify the types of speech acts commonly used, examine how the digital context influences the forms and strategies of these utterances, and explore the socio-cultural meanings embedded in these interactions. A qualitative descriptive method was used with data collected from 150 naturalistic comments made by adolescents aged 13–19. The analysis was conducted using Searle's speech act theory, focusing on contextual categorization and interpretation. The findings indicate that representative and expressive speech acts are the most frequently used, followed by directive, commissive, and declarative speech acts. The digital environment shapes linguistic expression through unique features such as emoticons, informal spelling, and visual-emotional reinforcers. These linguistic choices are influenced by the immediate, informal, and performative nature of online interactions. The results also indicate that speech acts on social media reflect adolescents' construction of identity, group affiliation, and shared cultural norms in the digital space. This study concludes that social media serves not only as a communication tool but also as a platform for socio-cultural expression among adolescents. Further studies could explore variations in usage across platforms or different demographic groups.

Abstract

This study aims to use Canva-based online comics as an interactive teaching tool to illustrate Mandailing folklore. The method employed is descriptive analytic, with instrument reliability tested using Cronbach's Alpha, indicating high reliability with an alpha value above 0.7. Data were collected in two stages. The urgency of this research is to examine the impact of technological advancements on local culture, making digital media such as online comics an effective teaching tool. First, oral literature of folklore was recorded, transcribed, and translated into Indonesian. Second, the instrument was applied to students through online comics, which were then quantitatively evaluated to measure student engagement and understanding. Based on research conducted in Mandailing Natal Regency, student engagement at SMP N 1 Panyabungan Utara was 40%, at Tsanawiyah Arriyadul Mukhlisin 33%, and at Pesantren Abinnur Al-Islami 27%. Student enthusiasm was 41% at SMP N 1 Panyabungan Utara, 32% at Tsanawiyah Arriyadul Mukhlisin, and 27% at Pesantren Abinnur Al-Islami. The percentage of students who understood was 38% at SMP N 1 Panyabungan Utara, 33% at Tsanawiyah Arriyadul Mukhlisin, and 29% at Pesantren Abinnur Al-Islami. The percentage of students using this technology was 42% at SMP N 1 Panyabungan Utara, 33% at Tsanawiyah Arriyadul Mukhlisin, and 25% at Pesantren Abinnur Al-Islami. This study examines the conditions at several schools in Mandailing Natal Regency, showing differences in student engagement, enthusiasm, understanding, and technical constraints faced.

Abstract

Blacksmithing communities and their occupational language are increasingly overlooked amid industrial tool production, yet linguistic studies of blacksmith discourse remain scarce. This study aims to reveal the forms of material process patterns, constituent constructions, and cultural theme patterns in the Angkola blacksmith language (Pande Bosi) through the perspective of Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL). The study addresses the limitations of previous research that has focused more on other professions, while the transitivity of Pande Bosi language has been minimally examined. Using a descriptive qualitative design, data were obtained from 20 informants aged 30–67 years in Sipange Village. Data collection employed structured interviews using listening, engaging, and speaking techniques, and the analysis followed Spradley’s content analysis model (domain, taxonomy, componential, and cultural themes). The results indicate that the material process in Pande Bosi is divided into happening and doing. Happening is marked by basic verbs and the morpheme {Mar-}, whereas doing appears in creative forms (non-conflated and conflated) and dispositive forms (tending to be passive). Constituent construction is dominated by actors and goals, while beneficiaries and ranges are absent due to brief spoken expressions and frequent omissions. Culturally, inversion prioritizes the process over the actor, reflecting a practical and straightforward communicative character. This study provides initial documentation of Pande Bosi transitivity as a linguistic and cultural representation of the local community.
