Abstract

Wrong eating behavior in school-age children may end up in serious nutrition problems. During the periods of growth of elementary-school-age children, attention should be paid to their nutrition fulfilment. Inadequate knowledge of nutrition education may lead them to unhealthy food consumption. Healthy food itself is one which contains balanced nutritions. The introduction of fast food into the food health sector in Indonesia can also influence public diets. In order to evade future nutrition problems, nutrition education is thus necessary for elementary-school-age children, especially for the purpose of enhancing knowledge, attitude, and selection practice healthy foods and snacks. The menus for school-age children must have nutrition contents which are balanced and needed by the body. This research determines the effect of nutrition education on SD Tarakanita Magelang fifth graders’ knowledge of healthy and nutritious food consumption. The 64 respondents enrolled in this research were divided into two classes: education and non-education classes. The respondents consisted of 10–13-year-old fifth graders. This research used a questionnaire for data collection. Pre-test was first conducted to both education and non-education classes. Then, to the education class four nutrition education materials were delivered. Two months afterward the final data were derived through post-test. The research results showed that the provision of nutrition education for the fifth graders of SD Tarakanita Magelang affected their food consumption knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors. Abstract

Herbal medicinal products would be affected by the quality of raw materials. In turn, the quality of raw material will also be influenced by various factors such as soil conditions, cultivation, post-harvest processing, and the processing of raw materials into crude drug or extract. Therefore, in order to make good herbal medicines, it is necessary to make standardization of herbal extracts that produced herbal medicines that have the same quality and functions of effectiveness in each process. From preliminary studies that have been done, Centella asiatica is one of the potential plants as a source of hepatoprotective compounds. Test in vivo and in vitro against Centella asiatica extracts have shown very good results. Ethyl acetate extract with 17.5 mg/kg of doses body weight and butanol 228.8 mg/kgof doses body weight has been applied for in vivo test using mice induced by CCl4; theydemonstrated hepatoprotective effects. Ethyl acetate extracts were able to reduce levels of the enzyme alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST) by 56 % and 44 % respectively while butanol extract can reduce the enzymes AST levels by 3%. Standardizationof Centella asiatica extract performed in this study was the characterization of the extract in the form of non-specific and specific parameters corresponding to the reference of PPOMN (Ministry of health Republic of Indonesia, 2000) such as levels of drying shrinkage, ash content, total plate count microbial contamination, levels of water-soluble compounds, levels of compounds that are soluble in ethanol, phytochemical test, total phenolic content, total flavonoid content and the determination of Pb and Cd weight. The results showed that non-specific parameters for the ethanol extract of Centella asiatica were requirements based on Herbal Pharmacopoeia in 2008 which includes parameters such as determination of shrinkage on drying ≤ 10%, ash content ≤ 16.6% and negative microbial contamination. Specific parameters for the ethanol extract of Centella asiatica have met the requirements of Herbal pharmacopeia in 2008.Keywords: Centellaasiatica, hepatoprotective, standardized herbal medicine, specificparameters, and non-specific parameters

Abstract

Molases and ammonium sulfate can be used as medium component to supply carbon and nitrogen respectively for production of antibacterial, through fermentation by Sirimosus ATCC 33022. During fermentation, pH, biomass and antibacterial activity against Bacillus cereus were observed. The results of this investigation indicated that the antibacterial production started after 48 hours of incubation and the maximum production was achieved after 144 hours of incubation. The antibacterial agent was extracted with n-butanol of technical grade and HCI 0.1 N and purification was carried out by recrystallization with ethanol as the solvent. The yield was 50.278 mg antibacterial agent per litre of fermentation medium. The isolated antibacterial compound possesses Amax of 266 nm whereas the oxytetracycline demonstrated maximum peak at 267nm with Eo 1.8529 x 10(4) cm(-l) M(-1). Thin layer chromatography with three eluents of the standard oxytetracycline gave Rf of 0.76; 0.64 and 0.75 while the isolated compound gave 0.76; 0.65 and 0.77 for the respective eluent. HPLC analysis on J-l-bondapak C-18 column with methanol-acetonitrile-oxalic acid 0.1 M (1 : 15 : 7) being the solvent indicated that the  isolated antibacterial agent and oxytetracycline standard were eluted at 4.35 minutes. Further analysis with FTIR of both isolated antibacterial agent and oxytetracycline standard had peaks at 3400, 1650-1600, 1238 and 2916-2848 cm(-1) indicating the presence of fenol, amide, amine and methyl groups. Antimicrobial activity tests during storage at 4 °C and -12°C of the isolated compound in various HCI solutions showed that HCI 0.1 N gave the best stability.
