Abstract

The awareness of the importance of reading in Indonesia, especially in rural areas, still needs to improve. Rural communities need to understand the importance and benefits of reading. Along with the times, people and even children prefer to use gadgets for entertainment, listening while watching, and other entertainment activities. This activity aimed to enhance the importance of reading interest in rural communities, foster critical thinking and analytical abilities, and improve literacy within the village. The methods employed in this activity included presentations, discussions, question-and-answer sessions, and simulations. The service activity team delivered a presentation on the benefits of reading, an explanation of reading sources, and techniques to enhance interest in reading. Furthermore, a discussion session was held between the service activity team and participants to ascertain the extent of their understanding. The outcome of this activity was to advise children and students to engage in 15 minutes of non-lesson reading before the commencement of the lesson. This program was implemented to foster students' interest in reading and improve their reading skills. This activity identified new avenues for promoting interest in reading, including the procurement of reading books in schools that must be updated according to the times, educators who innovate, increasing educators' competence, and expanding the library collection. Utilizing the reading corner to increase interest in reading, it needs to be supported by all parties. The results of the analysis indicate that the literacy movement's impact can increase interest in reading. Therefore, the results of this activity can be recommended for the school literacy movement to improve students' interest in reading.

Abstract

Abstract

The Pisifera type oil palm is an important palm variety and mostly used as a pollen source to produce Tenera commercial hybrid varieties. This research on proliferating fertile Pisifera oil palm callus using somatic embryogenesis method was conducted at the Tissue Culture Laboratory of PT. Sampoerna Agro, Tbk from February to August 2021 to find out the optimum basal media and the concentration of growth regulators on callus proliferation. The planting material was the primary callus from the previous research. This study used a factorial Completely Randomized Design with two factors. The first factor involved two types of basal media: MS and Y3, and the second factor consisted of different concentrations of growth regulators (PGR). All treatments were repeated three times. The results showed that the use of MS media supplemented with 6 mg/l NAA and 0.5 mg/l 2,4-D was the most effective treatment for the proliferation of embryogenic callus in term of callus initiation time, the capacity of primary callus formation, primary calli morphology and proliferation, and callus fresh weight.

Abstract

Education carried out for children and adolescents is very important in the formation of community character which is important in the affective aspects of children, cognitive aspects or psychomotor aspects or skills. With this community service, it is hoped that there will be improvements, abilities, and provide scientific information about shade plants that can be used to overcome pollution and support conservation attitudes towards the environment. The method used in this community service is the participatory method. Community service, especially regarding conservation education for students, will ultimately support sustainable development and can have a positive impact on environmental conservation in the present and future.

Abstract

Matoa (Pometia pinnata J.R. & G. Forst) is a tropical tree of the Sapindaceae family widely distributed in Southeast Asia, yet the genetic diversity and evolutionary relationships among its variants in South Sumatra remain poorly understood. This study aimed to clarify the genetic structure of four local variants forest, red, yellow, and green matoa using Random Amplified Polymorphic DNA (RAPD) markers. Leaf samples representing each variant were collected across different regions of South Sumatra and analyzed through standard molecular procedures, including DNA extraction and RAPD amplification using five primers. Cluster analysis based on Jaccard’s coefficient and UPGMA revealed two major genetic groups, indicating substantial variation among the studied variants. Red and yellow matoa showed the closest genetic affinity, whereas forest matoa was the most distinct from the others. These findings demonstrate considerable intraspecific diversity within matoa populations in South Sumatra. The study provides essential baseline information that strengthens conservation strategies, supports potential breeding programs, and enhances understanding of the species’ evolutionary patterns within tropical ecosystems.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the secondary metabolite content of the essential oils of kaffir lime, kalamansi and lime peels from South Sumatra. This research consisted of several stages, namely the stage of identifying kaffir lime, calamansi and lime plants, the stage of preparing tools and materials, the stage of distillation of the essential oils of kaffir lime, calamansi and lime peels and the stage of identifying the chemical components of essential oils using the GC-MS method. Based on research, it can be concluded that the main essential oil content of kaffir lime peel, calamansi and lime from South Sumatra are citronellal (24.55%), limonene (97.12%) and limonene (35.24%) respectively.
