Abstract

This study aims to explore the views of pre-service chemistry teachers on the nature of science and technology. Pre-service chemistry teachers’ view of nature of science and technology (VNOST) is very important to help their students later in understanding the concepts of science. This research is the initial stage in didactical design research involving 48 pre-service chemistry teachers from Sriwijaya University. The descriptive method is used to explain the results of the analysis of pre-service chemistry teachers’ VNOST. Student views were assessed using the VNOST questionnaire, consisting of 8 questions and guided by the discourse of ionic liquid technology. Data collection uses a survey containing the views of pre-service chemistry teachers on VNOST and where each statement grouped according to three categories, namely "Realistic" (R), "Has Merit" (HM), and Naïve (N). The results showed that in general, students have the view of Has Merit (HM), or the belief that they chose is not entirely correct even though there are parts of statements that are still by the general view of science. The results of this student VNOST exploration are the basis for developing learning designs that are oriented to the realist answers of each question so that learning designs are produced based on aspects of the Nature of Science and Technology.

Abstract

This study evaluates the alignment of the curriculum with national policies and global environmental challenges, assesses the availability of resources and teaching strategies, and measures students' learning outcomes in cognitive, affective, and behavioral dimensions. Using a mixed-methods approach within the CIPP (Context, Input, Process, and Product) evaluation model, the study involved the program chair, two-course instructors, and 26 students from a public university in Aceh. Research instruments included questionnaires, observation sheets, interview guides, and test items. The findings indicate that the curriculum is relevant to global issues and supports the development of students' critical thinking skills. However, limited laboratory facilities, insufficient funding, and a lack of support for environment-based projects pose significant challenges to optimal curriculum implementation. Additionally, the program effectively enhances students' understanding of global environmental issues and their relevance to the SDGs but requires stronger integration of practical applications and explicit connections to SDG targets. Recommendations include project-based learning innovations, cross-sector collaborations, and improvements in facilities and funding to holistically enhance students' environmental literacy and prepare them as sustainability change agents.

Abstract

This study investigates the measurement of the speed of sound in air using a resonance tube assisted by a smartphone-based frequency generator, designed to support STEM-based learning. The experiment follows a quantitative approach, with the length of the air column as the independent variable and the speed of sound as the dependent variable. Control frequencies of 495 Hz, 755 Hz, 1010 Hz, 1270 Hz, and 1530 Hz were generated via a mobile application. Resonance points were identified by observing the peak sound intensity using a digital sound level meter, which indicated the formation of standing waves. The results showed a strong linear relationship between wavelength (λ) and wave period (T), with regression equations λ = 347.62T + 0.0098 (open pipe) and λ = 361.59T − 0.0176 (closed pipe), each with a correlation coefficient of R = 0.99. At room temperature (24.4°C), the measured speed of sound was (347.6 ± 0.2) m/s for the open pipe and (361.6 ± 0.1) m/s for the closed pipe. These results demonstrate that low-cost, smartphone-assisted setups can produce accurate, reliable data. This method enhances student engagement and understanding of acoustic phenomena, providing an accessible and effective model for implementing hands-on STEM-based learning in physics education.
