Abstract

Tesso Nilo National Park, located in Southeast Asia, is home to 3% of the world's mammal species, including endangered species such as the Sumatran elephant and Sumatran tiger, and possesses high biodiversity. However, over the past two decades, its forest cover has faced significant threats, primarily due to population growth and the expansion of oil palm plantations. This study aims to analyze the conservation partnership program implemented by the Tesso Nilo National Park Office to restore forest functions and promote sustainable forest management. The research uses a qualitative case study approach. Findings reveal that the Tesso Nilo National Park Office regularly engages with surrounding communities. Through the Job Creation Law (Undang-Undang Cipta Kerja), the community has been introduced to mechanisms for managing conservation areas and the implementation of ecosystem restoration partnerships. Eligible communities have agreed to collaborate with the park's office to rehabilitate degraded areas with multifunctional forest crops, including jengkol (Archidendron pauciflorum), durian, mangosteen, candlenut, avocado, and others, using the heteroculture planting method. This study concludes that effective conservation partnerships require active collaboration from all parties, supported by clear policies, especially from the Ministry of Forestry.

Abstract

The main cause of the gender gap in education is a lack of commitment and understanding of gender in Rokan Hilir (Hidir & Yanis, 2015). This study aims to (1) implement/apply the model of community empowerment-based design thinking in order to achieve gender-responsive education in Rokan Hilir; (2) to formulate gender-responsive educational design that is contextual in Rokan Hilir. This study uses a qualitative method variant in the form of phenomenology. The unit of analysis is the institutional community of the Department of Education and educators as well as educators in Rokan Hilir. The data collection technique uses the techniques of Participatory Rural Appraisal (PRA) with data analysis techniques in the form of a three-lane qualitative data analysis, namely data reduction, data display, and conclusion. The results showed that the application of design thinking allows for the application of social change, especially the mindset of the target group in a bottom-up manner. This means that the commitment and understanding of gender-responsive education could be increased from the root (grass root) without imposing target groups to change the values of the original locality of the region. Therefore, community empowerment is done to encourage social changes in a smooth and constructive manner for local development in Rokan Hilir, especially in the field of education and gender.

Abstract

This study aims to examine and comprehend the structural and functional responses of the community in Tambang District, Kampar Regency, to the construction of the Trans-Sumatra Toll Road interchange. This large-scale infrastructure development has triggered the inevitable phenomenon of urban agglomeration, changing the physical and socio-economic landscape of the region. This study uses a descriptive-analytical qualitative approach with a single case study design. Data was collected through in-depth interviews, observation, and documentation, and analyzed using an interactive model. Tambang Subdistrict evolved into a strategic hub characterized by substantial alterations in spatial planning, land utilization, and the reconfiguration of ownership. Functionally, mobility drastically improved, but the economic impacts on Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) were profoundly varying. The findings reveal an economic dichotomy: MSMEs, like Dapur Aru, experienced increased turnover due to expanded accessibility, while traditional MSMEs, like Lopek Bugi, faced a decline due to disruption in traditional access patterns. These results support the Growth Pole Theory but offer a nuanced contribution by showing how the developmental effects are uneven at the micro-community level, aligning with Structural Functionalism. The conclusion underscores the urgency of more targeted and adaptive MSME mitigation and empowerment policies to ensure local socio-economic sustainability amid development.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the process of dialect adaptation in Medan by migrants from Jakarta, particularly among students at the University of North Sumatra. Using a descriptive qualitative method with interviews and observations, the study found that the dialectal differences between Jakarta and Medan created communication barriers during initial interactions, especially in terms of vocabulary, accent, and pronoun usage. However, migrants from Jakarta gradually adapted to the local dialect through intense social interactions and efforts to adjust to local cultural norms. This adaptation process accelerated social integration and helped migrants build stronger relationships with the Medan community. The study also shows that language change reflects migrants' efforts to be accepted in the local community. Dialect adaptation is not just about communication but also about the formation of social identity and acceptance of local culture. The study concludes that despite initial barriers, dialect adaptation in Medan becomes a crucial strategy in the social acculturation process that allows migrants to be accepted into their new environment.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the role and interpretation of Sociology students at the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (FISIP) of Riau University regarding the role of academic advisors (PA). Paradigmatically, Parsons' structural functionalism theory is often identified with a quantitative approach. However, this study consciously employs Parsons' Role Theory as the theoretical framework for qualitative research, as it focuses on the concepts of “role” and “role expectations,” which are relevant for an in-depth exploration from the students' perspective. The method used is a qualitative approach with a descriptive case study design. Primary data were collected through semi-structured in-depth interviews with 2023 sociology students selected purposively. Data analysis used Miles and Huberman's interactive model, which includes data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion-drawing. The results show that students have diverse interpretations of the role of PA lecturers, which are often adapted to their personal needs and experiences.  The main findings reveal a gap between students' role expectations and the role performance they perceive from academic advisors. This study concludes that the implementation of the academic advising system at the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, University of Riau, has not been fully effective in meeting students' expectations, and further evaluation is needed to bridge this gap between the two.

Abstract

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine the reasons and extent of women's understanding of the risks of e-cigarettes among women in Pekanbaru City. This type of research is descriptive qualitative. Researchers analyzed data using a case study method in which researchers conducted observations, interviews and documentation. To obtain informants, researchers used the Accidental Sampling technique, which is a method of accidental sampling by taking cases or informants who happened to be there or available at the time of the study. The types and sources of data used are primary and secondary data. In this study, researchers wanted to find out the reasons why women in Pekanbaru City use e-cigarettes and whether they know the risks they will get, such as health risks, cultural risks and economic risks. Then researchers used Max Weber's theory of social action, which has 4 types of actions including instrumental actions where someone assesses the best way to achieve a goal, value actions where someone cannot assess the right or wrong method chosen, affective actions are actions taken because of emotional impulses and traditional actions which are carried out based on hereditary habits. The use of electronic cigarettes among women in Pekanbaru City was analyzed using a social action perspective. Of the 5 main informants that the researcher had interviewed, the results were that 3 informants were included in traditional actions and 2 people were included in value actions.
