Abstract

Traditional instructional methods often fail to develop students' metacognitive and evaluative reading skills, necessitating innovative pedagogical approaches that leverage digital technology to enhance literacy development. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of a digital media-assisted reciprocal learning strategy on fifth-grade elementary students' reading comprehension skills. This study used a quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental method. The study participants consisted of 302 grade V students (aged 10-11 years) from six elementary schools in urban Indonesia. The intervention was conducted over one semester. Data were collected through a Reading Comprehension Test of 30 questions and classroom observations. The analysis included descriptive statistics and ANCOVA to test the main hypothesis. The experimental group showed a significant increase in reading comprehension compared to the control group, sig=0.001<0.05 (Cohen's d = 1.34). The increase was especially seen in the dimensions of metacognitive awareness (Cohen's d = 1.37) and evaluative reading (Cohen's d = 1.32), indicating that the integration of digital media with reciprocal learning strategies effectively improved high-level comprehension skills. Conclusion: Reciprocal learning with the assistance of digital media is an effective approach to improving students' reading comprehension skills. This research has contributed to the utilization of digital technology with reciprocal learning strategies effectively in literacy learning.

Abstract

This paper describes the innovation process of Islamic schools in building students' image and character. This research was conducted at the primary education level, specifically at a private junior high school in the suburbs. The school has proven successful in building its image and character education model, transforming it from a public school into a leading school chosen by parents. Furthermore, this school was selected based on several other factors, including its unique history and its position as a leading and exemplary Islamic school in Malang, Indonesia. This study employs a qualitative case study approach, with data collection conducted through interviews, observations, and documentation. In the data analysis process, the researcher used case study data analysis, as described by Yin, which consists of four parts: pattern matching, explanation building, time series analysis, and repeated observations. The study's results revealed that the school was initially an underappreciated Islamic school with lower parental school preferences. The school did not offer any specialisations or achievements to prospective students. After the school innovated by initiating and articulating its core values in various aspects of the school, including the curriculum, environment, and social media, the school's core values became a driving force in developing character education and enhancing the school's brand. This condition attracts public attention and increases parental preference for schools. This study suggests that initiating and articulating unique and strong core values is a breakthrough that can transform the brand and character education model of schools, ultimately increasing parental preference for these institutions. This study recommends further quantitative research to measure the specific impact of implementing core values on parental preferences in a more measurable manner.

Abstract

Computational thinking (CT) is a vital 21st-century skill in mathematics education, enabling students to solve problems systematically through decomposition, pattern recognition, abstraction, and algorithmic thinking. However, students’ mathematical disposition—encompassing beliefs, habits of mind, and affective tendencies—may significantly influence CT development. Guided by the affective–cognitive interaction model, this study aimed to explore how mathematical disposition shapes students’ CT skills, particularly in solving systems of three-variable linear equations using self-constructed, flowchart-supported algorithmic representations. A descriptive qualitative approach was adopted, with six students (two each from high, medium, and low disposition levels, identified via questionnaire) participating. Data collection involved a disposition scale, CT test, interviews, and documentation. Findings revealed that high-disposition students successfully demonstrated all CT indicators and produced coherent flowcharts. Medium-disposition students showed variability: some met all criteria, while others faltered in algorithmic design. Low-disposition students managed only basic decomposition and pattern recognition, with incomplete abstraction and fragmented flowcharts. These results suggest a strong link between affective factors and cognitive performance in CT tasks. Implications highlight the importance of integrating disposition-aware scaffolding—such as interactive visual tools and guided reflection—to support diverse learners and enhance CT development in mathematics classrooms.

Abstract

Background: Indonesia exhibits a critical dependency on garlic imports, satisfying 96.8% of national demand (575,000 tons) and positioning the nation as the world's largest importer in the first half of 2024. This reliance undermines local competitiveness, necessitating urgent improvements in domestic productivity. However, cultivation is hindered by two primary constraints: limited arable land and the crop's high sensitivity to heat during vernalization. Vernalization, a cold-induced process (5°C–13°C) essential for transitioning vegetative buds to reproductive stages, presents a significant challenge in tropical climates. Methods: This study proposes a novel device integrating a pipe-based vertical cultivation system with a passive vernalization chamber. Utilizing evaporative cooling and locally sourced materials like clay and coconut fiber, it provides low-cost, energy-efficient operation. The device’s performance and feasibility in tropical regions were evaluated through literature review of heat transfer and material properties. Findings: The Tropiverna system, integrating vertical cultivation with passive and active cooling mechanisms, effectively maintains stable low temperatures for garlic vernalization in tropical conditions. The combination of evaporative cooling via clay-coconut fiber pots and Peltier thermoelectric modules reduces heat stress, enhances temperature uniformity, and improves energy efficiency. This design optimizes land use and is projected to increase garlic productivity by up to 307.79% per hectare. Conclusion: Integrates verticulture with a hybrid cooling system utilizing zeer pot principles and Peltier modules, theoretically resolves Indonesia’s land and climatic constraints by optimizing vernalization conditions, thereby serving as a sustainable, scalable strategy to reduce import dependency and strengthen national food sovereignty. Novelty/Originality of this article: The novelty of this research lies in the specific application of a cost-effective vernalization system within a vertical farming architecture designed for the tropics, offering an adaptive solution for sustainable national food sovereignty.
