Abstract

Depression is a mental health problem that affects the elderly. As meeting the spiritual needs of depressed older people is important, a spiritual approach nursing intervention must be applied to reduce the level of depression in this population. This study proposed an integrated spiritual nursing approach through music therapy, dhikr, and deep breathing to improve depression levels among the elderly living in Cisalak Pasar, Depok City, in 2019. The research method used was a case study of an evidence-based practice using the Geriatric Depression Scale. The study sample consisted of 106 elderly, who were recruited by purposive sampling. The average depression scores among the elderly were 4.79 and 2.48 before and after the intervention, respectively, indicating that the mean depression score decreased by 2.31. The independent t-test results obtained a p-value < 0.05, demonstrating the positive influence of the proposed spiritual approach nursing intervention on the level of depression among the subjects. A spiritual approach nursing intervention program through music therapy, dhikr, and deep breathing reduced the level of depression in the elderly. Thus, such an approach can be used as an intervention option in dealing with depression problems in the elderly.

Abstract

Abstract Background: Family support is a crucial determinant of elderly wellbeing, influencing emotional stability, independence, and overall quality of life. The Family Support Scale (FSS) is widely used internationally to measure perceived family support; however, no standardized Indonesian version has been available for elderly populations. Objective: This study aimed to translate, culturally adapt, and evaluate the validity and reliability of the Family Support Scale (FSS) for Older People into the Indonesian language for use among the elderly. Methods: A methodological design was applied using a standardized back-translation procedure encompassing forward translation, synthesis, blind back-translation, and expert harmonization. Fifty elderly respondents aged ≥60 years in Pekanbaru were recruited to assess the instrument’s psychometric properties. Construct validity was evaluated through corrected item–total correlation, while reliability was measured using Cronbach’s Alpha. Results: All 20 items demonstrated acceptable corrected item–total correlation values (>0.30), indicating good construct validity. Reliability testing yielded a Cronbach’s Alpha of 0.949, reflecting excellent internal consistency. The translation and cultural adaptation process successfully preserved semantic, cultural, and conceptual equivalence with the original instrument. Conclusion: The Indonesian version of the FSS is valid and reliable for assessing perceived family support among the elderly in Indonesia. The instrument is suitable for use in clinical practice, community health assessments, and elderly-focused research. Future studies should include larger and more diverse samples and incorporate exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses to further strengthen the construct structure.

Abstract

The high prevalence of smoking among adolescents poses a significant global health challenge. While resilience has been identified as a protective factor against risky behaviors, the underlying mechanisms and influencing factors have not been comprehensively synthesized. This study aimed to examine the relationship between resilience and smoking behavior among adolescents and to identify the mediating factors of this relationship through a systematic review. A systematic review design was employed following the PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses) guidelines. A comprehensive literature search was conducted across ScienceDirect, PubMed, ProQuest, and Scopus databases without publication year restrictions. The methodological quality of the included studies was assessed using the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) Critical Appraisal Checklist for Analytical Cross-Sectional Studies. Of the 326 articles identified, 10 studies met the inclusion criteria. The results indicated that high levels of resilience were significantly associated with lower rates of smoking behavior among adolescents. Resilience functions as a protective factor through the interaction between internal assets and external resources. Family support, school connectedness, positive peer support, and mental well-being were identified as key mediating factors that strengthen resilience in preventing smoking initiation. This study concludes that health promotion strategies and nursing interventions should not only focus on the dangers of smoking but also integrate resilience-building through a holistic approach involving family and school environments.

Abstract

Falls in the elderly are a serious problem because they can cause physical injuries, such as fractures, head trauma, and even death. Preventing falls in the elderly requires a multidimensional approach that is not only focused on the individual, but also involves the family as the main support unit. This review aims to identify family nursing-based fall prevention interventions. This systematic review method follows the PRISMA framework with article searches through Cinahl, ProQuest, Pubmed, ScienceDirect, Google scholar, and the Cochrane database of systematic reviews. The findings of this review revealed that of the 541 articles identified in the initial stage, nine articles met the eligibility criteria and were retained for further in-depth analysis. The results of the analysis provide insights into fall prevention interventions including; health education, mindfulness and psychoeducation, Otago exercise program, family involvement, fall risk assessment, and home modification. These findings have important implications for community health nurses in providing family nursing care, through empowering the family as the main caregiver in managing fall risk at home.

Abstract

Background: Type 2 diabetes mellitus requires consistent self-management, and successful disease control is strongly influenced by patients’ self-efficacy in performing daily care behaviors. Existing instruments mainly emphasize behavioral and treatment-related aspects and may not adequately capture broader holistic dimensions, including psychosocial adaptation and spiritual coping. Objective: This study aimed to develop and psychometrically evaluate the Holistic Diabetes Self-Efficacy Scale (HDSES) among individuals with type 2 diabetes mellitus in Indonesia. Methods: This methodological study followed four stages of instrument development, namely construct definition, item pool generation, scale design, and psychometric evaluation. The HDSES was conceptualized across six dimensions: nutrition, physical exercise, treatment adherence, blood glucose check, psychosocial adaptation, and spiritual coping. The initial questionnaire consisted of 30 items and was reviewed by three nurse lecturers specializing in diabetic care. Data were collected from patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus in the working areas of public health centers in Kendari City using simple random sampling. The final instrument consisted of 28 items rated on a five-point Likert scale ranging from 1 (very uncertain) to 5 (very confident). Validity was assessed using Pearson correlation, and reliability was examined using Cronbach’s alpha. Results: The findings showed that all six HDSES dimensions demonstrated adequate item validity and good internal consistency. The dimensions of nutrition, physical exercise, treatment adherence, blood glucose check, psychosocial adaptation, and spiritual coping were all found to be valid and reliable for assessing holistic diabetes self-efficacy.Conclusion: The HDSES is a valid and reliable instrument for measuring holistic diabetes self-efficacy among patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus in Indonesia. The scale may support more comprehensive nursing assessment, health education, and tailored interventions in primary care settings.
