Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic condition causes the elderly to experience depression. Elderly access to health services during a pandemic requires health professionals to consider the use of an Android application as a method of approach. The method used in this paper is a case study with the aggregate of the elderly in Depok City. The sampling technique chosen was convenience sampling with a sample size of 38 people. The implementation of empowerment for the elderly is carried out using an android application named “Sadar Depresi Lansia”. The paired t-test results show that the use of android applications has a positive effect on the elderly's understanding of depression (sig. = 0.000) and depression level in the elderly (sig. = 0.000). The use of innovative android applications to provide education and screening services to the elderly with depression can be one of the methods that can be used by health workers.

Abstract

Background: Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a global health problem with an increasing prevalence. Most related studies focus on Diabetes Self-Management (DSM) in urban populations or general contexts, leaving a gap in understanding the specific factors affecting DSM among rural T2DM patients. Therefore, there is limited understanding of the factors that influence DSM in rural T2DM patients.Purpose: This study aimed to investigate DSM in rural T2DM patients and its associated factorsMethods: This study employed a cross-sectional design. The samples involved 146 patients with T2DM from the community health center in Ogan Komering Ulu Regency, Indonesia, selected using a simple random sampling technique. Diabetes Knowledge Questionnaire (DKQ), Diabetes Management Self-Efficacy Scale (DMSES), Hensarling Diabetes Family Support Scale (HDFSS), and Diabetes Self-Management Instrument (DSMI) were used for data collection. The t-test, ANOVA, Pearson correlation, and multiple linear regression were used to analyze the data. Results: The study found a significant relationship between gender (p=0.001), knowledge (p=0.001), self-efficacy (p=0.001), and family support (p=0.032) with DSM in rural T2DM patients. However, the multiple regression analysis revealed that self-efficacy (β=0.392, p=0.001), gender (β=0.283, p=0.001), and duration of DM (β=-0.189, p=0.012) significantly affected  DSM in patients with T2DM in rural areas, explaining  28 percent of the variance  (R2=0.280).Conclusion: The results indicated a significant relationship between gender, knowledge, self-efficacy, and family support with DSM in T2DM patients in rural areas, with self-efficacy being the most dominant factor affecting DSM. This study recommends that community nurses can play a pivotal role in designing and implementing interventions enhancing self-efficacy. Additionally, the involvement of PROLANIS, collaborating with key community figures, is crucial to increasing community participation and support for effective diabetes self-management.

Abstract

Background: bullying is a problem that never ages in school. Bullying continues to occur in schools. Currently, only the victims and perpetrators are being looked at a lot regarding the psychological impact they face. However, witnesses to bullying also experienced negative impacts due to the bullying, including for students at Islamic boarding schools who faced their friends 24 hours a day. Purpose: this study aims to explore the psychological impact of bullying witnesses on students in Islamic boarding schools. Methods: This research is a qualitative study with a phenomenological approach. The number of participants was five students who were selected using snowball sampling, with the criteria of being students who had witnessed bullying at an Islamic boarding school. Data were collected through in-depth interviews and field notes. The interviews were transcribed verbatim, and the data were analyzed using thematic analysis based on Colaizzi’s method. The process involved extracting significant statements, formulating meanings, clustering themes, and validating the findings with participants to ensure credibility. Results: this study produced 5 themes, namely the emotional reaction of bullying witnesses, feelings of guilt, sense of responsibility, coping mechanisms, and prevention strategies. Conclusion: bullying has a psychological impact on students, so it is necessary to intervene efforts that must be given so that they do not fall to further stages.

Abstract

The aging process affects the immune system, making the elderly more vulnerable to bacterial and viral infections. Urinary tract infection (UTI) is the second most common infection among geriatric patients. UTIs caused by urinary catheter use, known as Catheter Acquired Urinary Tract Infections (CAUTI), are the leading cause of nosocomial infections, with 80% linked to catheter use. Preventing catheter use beyond 72 hours can reduce CAUTI incidence. The use of Nurse Driven Protocols (NDP) is one of the interventions recommended by the CDC to reduce catheter-related risk factors. This articles aiming to discuss the impact of NDP implementation on the incidence of CAUTI in geriatric patients. This study was conducted using the PRISMA checklist. Literature searches were conducted through several databases, including ProQuest. Science Direct, Scopus, and ClinicalKey Nursing, within the last five years (2020–2024). From 110 identified articles, five met the inclusion criteria, and two were analyzed in depth. The implementation of Nurse Driven Protocols (NDP) significantly reduced the incidence of CAUTI by ensuring catheters are only used when absolutely necessary and removed as soon as no longer indicated. Routine 24-hour assessments enable nurse to independently evaluate catheter use based on clear clinical criteri , such as the HOUDINI system. NDP empowers nurse to conduct independent evaluations and make decisions regarding catheter use, effectively preventing CAUTI and improving the quality of patient care.

Abstract

Background: The number of older adults with dementia in Indonesia continues to increase. However, many family caregivers still have limited knowledge and skills, leading to adverse effects on both the older adults and the caregivers themselves. Existing interventions mainly focus on single aspects of care and have not adequately addressed the physical, psychological, social, and spiritual dimensions. Therefore, there is a need for a comprehensive intervention model that holistically meets caregivers’ needs.Purpose: This study aimed to develop a home-based holistic dementia nursing intervention model for family caregivers and identify its key features. Methods: Three approaches were used for model development: (1) literature review, (2) in-depth interviews, and (3) expert validation. Five articles addressing holistic care dimensions and nursing interventions were included in the review. Fifteen participants took part in the in-depth interviews, while expert validation involved three specialists in the geriatric field with specific qualifications. Data were collected between August and September 2022. Analysis was conducted by comparing and synthesizing the findings from the literature review, interviews, and expert validation. Results: The holistic dementia nursing intervention model for family caregivers consisted of four intervention domains: (1) physical, (2) psychological, (3) social, and (4) spiritual. The model also incorporated three key components: (1) communication processes, (2) organizational processes, and (3) belief systems. Conclusion: The home-based holistic dementia nursing intervention model for family caregivers offers a potential conceptual framework to comprehensively address the physical, psychological, social, and spiritual needs of both older adults and their caregivers.

Abstract

Heart Failure (HF) is a progressive disease that occurs in 0.13% of Indonesia's population and is dominated by the elderly. This disease requires high costs due to high rehospitalization rates. In meeting their daily needs, the elderly with HF needs caregivers to pay attention to their health, prevent risk factors, and identify resources owned by the family to support the needs of the elderly with HF. The aim of this systematic review was to identify the effect of knowledge of elderly clients and caregivers on the incidence of re-hospitalization in the elderly with HF. The data collection method uses an electronic database from journals that have been published through ScienceDirect, EBSCOHost, ProQuest, ClinicalKey, and Scopus. The data was analyzed using PRISMA diagram. The results of the systematic review of related journals show that the knowledge of clients and caregivers can reduce the incidence of re-hospitalization, and worsening of conditions, and reduce the risk of mortality in heart failure patients, therefore good understanding and literacy is needed for caregivers and elderly clients with HF.
