Abstract

Misconceptions in physics learning, particularly in dynamic electricity, often hinder students’ conceptual understanding and problem-solving abilities. This study aimed (1) to develop a valid and reliable three-tier diagnostic test and (2) to identify junior high school students’ misconceptions regarding dynamic electricity concepts. The research employed a Research and Development (RD) approach adapted from the Borg and Gall model and modified according to Treagust’s diagnostic test development framework. The development process involved content determination, information gathering, test construction, expert validation, and field testing. The instrument consisted of three-tier multiple-choice items comprising answer selection, reasoning, and confidence level. Item validity was analyzed using the point-biserial correlation coefficient, while reliability was calculated using the Kuder–Richardson Formula 20 (KR-20). The finalized instrument included 21 valid items with a reliability coefficient of 0.75, indicating good reliability. The diagnostic test was administered to 189 students from five classes at a public senior high school. The findings revealed that 49.4% of students experienced misconceptions, 36.6% understood the concepts, 6.9% had weak conceptual understanding, 5.6% did not understand the concepts, and 1.1% answered correctly by guessing. These results indicate that misconceptions in dynamic electricity remain prevalent and highlight the importance of diagnostic assessment as a basis for remedial instruction.

Abstract

Academic writing in English remains a persistent challenge for English as a Foreign Language (EFL) students, whose written work often fails to meet disciplinary expectations due to complex interactions among linguistic competence, psychological states, and strategic behavior. While previous quantitative research, particularly studies employing Structural Equation Modeling (SEM), has examined causal and mediating relationships among writing self-efficacy, anxiety, strategy use, and performance, these approaches offer limited insight into how these constructs manifest in students' lived experiences and writing processes. To address this gap, the present study adopts a descriptive qualitative approach to portray the characteristics, expressions, and interconnections of writing strategy use, self-efficacy beliefs, and writing anxiety as experienced by EFL learners in relation to their academic writing performance. In-depth semi-structured interviews and analysis of writing artifacts were conducted with 18 purposively selected students from the 4th, 6th, and 8th semesters of the English Language Education Study Program at Halu Oleo University. Data were analyzed through iterative thematic analysis to generate rich descriptions of participants' strategic behaviors, confidence levels, emotional responses, and perceived writing outcomes. The findings depict self-efficacious students as actively employing planning, drafting, and revising strategies with metacognitive awareness, which they associate with improved text quality and fluency. In contrast, students with low self-efficacy frequently reported strategy avoidance or mechanical application of techniques without adaptation to task demands. Writing anxiety emerged not as a uniform barrier but as a context-dependent experience, sometimes coexisting with strategic effort yet often disrupting cognitive resources during high-stakes writing tasks. Notably, the descriptive accounts reveal that strategy use appears closely intertwined with self-efficacy beliefs, while anxiety manifests more independently without consistent patterns of strategic compensation. These qualitative descriptions complement prior SEM-based findings by illuminating the experiential dimensions underlying statistical relationships, highlighting the need for pedagogy that nurtures self-efficacy through mastery experiences, cultivates flexible strategy repertoires with explicit modeling, and addresses anxiety through supportive writing environments. The study contributes a nuanced understanding of the psychological and strategic landscape of EFL academic writing beyond what variable-centered quantitative approaches alone can capture.

Abstract

Agricultural productivity plays a crucial role in ensuring global food security, yet prolonged drought continues to threaten the sustainability of dryland farming systems, particularly in developing countries. This study aims to develop a Localised Agriculture Strategy (LAS) within a Social-Ecological Systems framework to enhance dryland farming productivity in Indonesia. Employing a qualitative case study approach, primary data were collected through observations and in-depth interviews with 16 informants, including farmers, water user groups, and irrigation managers, while secondary data were obtained from relevant documentation. The data were analysed thematically to identify context-specific adaptive strategies. The findings reveal that LAS emerges as a social-ecological adaptation shaped by the interaction between local communities and environmental constraints. Four key strategies were identified: (1) classification of agricultural vulnerability levels based on Awiq-awiq (customary regulations), (2) utilisation of the Rowot Sasak calendar and dryland distribution maps as sources of drought-related information, (3) adjustment of the gogo (upland rice) cultivation system according to drought intensity, and (4) strengthening collective action (gotong royong) in optimising embung (small reservoirs) for irrigation and aligning cropping patterns with water availability. These strategies demonstrate that integrating local knowledge, social institutions, and ecological conditions can significantly improve agricultural productivity in drought-prone areas. This study contributes to the development of social-ecological-based agricultural strategies and offers practical insights for promoting adaptive farming practices and sustainable watershed management in dryland environments.

Abstract

Integrated Out-of-Class Service-Learning and Its Impact on Warm-Up Movement Competence, Drama Preparatory Skills, and Environmental-Themed Speaking Proficiency at SMK Negeri 7 Kolaka Abstract Learning activities at SMK Negeri 7 Kolaka are still dominated by lecture-based methods in the classroom, leaving students with little opportunity to actively develop their communication skills. This results in low self-confidence and limited ability to express ideas verbally. To address this, the service team implemented a community service activity in the form of an integrated out-of-class learning intervention that combined physical and mental warm-up activities, drama simulations, and speaking practice on environmental themes. This activity was attended by 29 tenth-grade students from three vocational programs (DKV, TO, and DPIB) with intensive guidance from the service team and partner teachers. Evaluation was conducted using a one-group pretest-posttest design to map competency development. The results showed significant improvement in all three aspects of ability, with students demonstrating greater confidence in presenting, more focused use of gestures and intonation, and improved fluency in speaking. Furthermore, this activity had a strategic impact on the school’s partners: partner teachers gained new capacity in facilitating kinesthetic and contextual learning in open spaces, while the school plans to integrate this model into its extracurricular programs and career readiness support. This community service initiative not only enhances students’ communication skills but also empowers teachers and fosters a learning ecosystem that is active, relevant, and aligned with the achievement of SDG Goal 4 on quality education through a learning approach that is relevant, active, and meaningful for the development of 21st-century skills.

Abstract

Online learning poses significant challenges to conceptual understanding in geography, particularly in rural Indonesian settings characterized by infrastructure and social limitations. This study aims to analyze the level of student understanding and identify fundamental obstacles in online geography learning at Senior High School State 2 Mawasangka Tengah. A quantitative approach was employed involving 25 Class X Social Science students and one geography teacher. Data were collected via essay tests (10 items on soil formation and distribution) and unstructured interviews. Data analysis utilized descriptive quantitative methods with percentages. Student understanding levels were categorized as high (32%; 8 students), medium (44%; 11 students), and low (24%; 6 students), with the medium category being dominant. Major obstacles included low internal learning motivation (laziness), language barriers in understanding instructional Indonesian, group learning adaptation issues, limited learning time allocation (90 minutes), social environment influences, and digital infrastructure limitations. There is a critical need for adaptive online geography instruction that addresses student disengagement, language barriers, time constraints, and socio-environmental factors to enhance conceptual understanding in future online learning implementations.
