Abstract

This study aims to examine the effectiveness of using TikTok as a learning medium in Arabic vocabulary instruction, with a particular focus on improving students’ comprehension and learning motivation. The research employed a quasi-experimental design involving two class groups: an experimental group that used TikTok as a learning medium and a control group that applied conventional teaching methods. Data were collected through pretests and posttests to measure students’ mastery of Arabic vocabulary, along with classroom observations to assess their participation and engagement during the learning process. The results revealed that the experimental group experienced a significant improvement in Arabic vocabulary mastery, with an average posttest score of 80,89 higher than the control group’s average score of 39,94. Furthermore, students in the experimental group showed higher learning motivation and greater engagement. Despite some technical challenges such as limited internet access, overall, the use of TikTok proved to be an effective and engaging medium for teaching Arabic vocabulary at MAN 3 Ngawi.

Abstract

Song lyrics as a form of poetic text not only serve an aesthetic function but also contain a communicative dimension that reflects the speaker’s attitudes, intentions, and emotional states within interpersonal relationships. In the context of modern popular Arabic music, themes of betrayal and disappointment are frequently represented through language rich in pragmatic meaning. This study aims to examine the realization of illocutionary speech acts in the lyrics of “Mathasibnish” written by Amir Teima and popularized by Sherine Abdel Wahab. The research employs a qualitative descriptive approach, drawing on speech act theory proposed by J. L. Austin and further developed by John Searle, which classifies illocutionary acts into representative, directive, commissive, expressive, and declarative categories. The data consist of utterances in the song lyrics, collected through documentation techniques and analyzed through processes of identification, classification, and interpretation of their pragmatic functions. The findings reveal that four types of illocutionary speech acts are present in the lyrics, namely representatives, directives, commissives, and expressives, while declaratives are not identified. The dominance of expressive acts emphasizes that the song discourse is oriented toward the expression of emotion, particularly feelings of disappointment and inner pain resulting from betrayal. Meanwhile, representative, directive, and commissive acts function to reinforce the speaker’s position and decisions within the relationship.

Abstract

Abstract

This article examines the role of Arabic as a foundation of intellectual resilience in Egypt during the Crusades and the Mongol invasions, particularly under the Ayyubid and Mamluk dynasties. It focuses on how Arabic functioned in sustaining the continuity of knowledge, reinforcing religious identity, supporting political legitimacy, and accommodating cultural interaction during periods of major political disruption. This study employs a qualitative historical design using document analysis of relevant historical and scholarly sources. The data were interpreted through a historical-interpretive approach to identify recurring patterns concerning the relationship between language, intellectual continuity, and civilizational resilience in medieval Egypt. The findings suggest that, within the documented historical context, Arabic functioned not only as a medium of scholarly communication but also as a language of religious authority, educational transmission, and political legitimacy. Educational institutions such as Al-Azhar and Ayyubid madrasas played an important role in preserving Arabic as the main language of religious and intellectual instruction, while the Mamluk administration employed Arabic to reinforce Islamic political authority despite the rulers’ non-Arab background. The study also finds that Arabic showed linguistic adaptability by incorporating foreign elements from Turkish, Persian, and Mongol influences without losing its central intellectual and cultural role. This article argues that, in medieval Egypt, Arabic served as an important instrument for preserving Islamic intellectual traditions and sustaining civilizational continuity during times of crisis.

Abstract

This study explored the dynamics of contemporary Islam in France as a representation of secular European countries through critical discourse analysis to examine the interaction between Islamic religious identity and the principles of secularism (laïcité). It is based on socio-cultural and political literature that highlights the increasing tension between the religious values of Muslims and the demands of citizenship in modern secular societies. Although numerous studies on secularism have been conducted, few have highlighted how Muslims in France experience and negotiate their religious identity under the pressure of state neutrality. This study aimed to analyze Muslim religious practices in the French secular context, identify the main challenges they face, and explore adaptation strategies to maintain religious identity while adjusting to secular values. Data was collected from international news reports discussing the banning of long clothing in schools, employment discrimination, and increasing anti-Muslim actions. The results demonstrated that public discourse in France frames Islam as a ‘potential threat’ to secularism, thereby legitimizing the state's restrictive policies and symbolic exclusion. However, Muslim communities continue to evidence resistance through selective adaptation and the preservation of religious practices in the private sphere. These findings enrich our understanding of the relationship between religion and politics in Europe and offer critical insights into cultural pluralism amid rising nationalism and rigid secularism.
