Abstract

The research was conducted to find out the most dominant learners’ types and to describe their preferences in learning English at the first semester in academic year 2018/2019English Education Study Program, Languages and Arts Faculty , Universitas Negeri Medan. The subject of the study was one class consisting 30 students. The collecting data in the research was by using learner types and preferences questionnaires and observing the learning process in the classroom. The result showed that there were some types of learners in this case. Concrete learner with their preferences are playing game, paying attention to thepictures, watching film is the most dominant one (40.00%). Preference of analytical learners relates to study grammar and English boo, it also relates to find the learners’ own problems (16.67%). Communicative learners (23.33%) with their preferences tend to listen to native speaker, to talk  to friend in English and to watch  English channel in you tube. The learners who are authority-oriented  (20.00%) with their preferences are understanding the teacher’s explanation and writing everything in a notebook.

Abstract

This study amis at establishing instructional material for the Subject of Seminar on English Language Teaching based on Flipped Learninng. In English Educational Study Program fifth semester students students of English Educational Study Program,  FBS, UNIMED. The study was conducted by utilizing  Research and Developmental Study There were three phases realized in this study: : First Survey and Evaluation Phase, second designing the  material and finally validating theinstructional  material. Based on the phases of the study followed, the following topics of instructional material were developed ; Foundation of Seminars, Some Key Terms s of Seminars and Paper Presentations, Analyzin  Topics for Seminar , Working out Pertinant  Topics, Establising  Paper Outline, Writing Paper Draft, Editing and Finalizing Paper, Designing Paper Presentations, Developing Power Point Presentation, Rehearsing Presentation, Paper Presentation, Running Productive Seminar. The feasibility test of teaching materials by the specialist. The findings indicated  that theoutcome of the study  established  were suitable pertinent and fit in with the students of  English Education Study Program with  the  mean 4.32.The material was upload to E-Learning FBS UNIMED to be utilized by the students.

Abstract

The objective of this endeavor was   to examine the utilization of translanguaging by vocational English teachers in Medan. The emphasis of the study was to identify the English instructor of vocational schools in Medan translated instruction in classroom. This endeavor was implemented by utilizing descriptive qualitative technique. The data of the research were the talk of English teacher instructions of vocational schools in Medan. The data were taken and collected from recorded and videos of the English teacher of vocational schools in Medan. The data were analyzed by applying the inductive model proposed by Miles, Huberman & Saldana (2014) such as data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing or verification. The results of the study showed that teacher used English first and continued in using Indonesian language to make the students comprehend  about the conversation in the classroom. Thus, the students are not bored and interest to study English.

Abstract

This research was conducted to find out the way the English  teachers used  translation and the reasons the teachers used it in the instructional activity with scientific approach. The information were obtained from the English teachers in MAN Medan.  Descriptive qualitative research design was utilized in answering the research’s problems. No treatment in this study. Following descriptive qualitative research this study provided  description of a phenomenon that occurred naturally without any an experiment intervention or an artificially contrived treatment. Observation and interview were utilised as the techniques of collecting data. The finding indicated that there were three English teachers in teaching English used scientific approach in the process of using and correcting words, phrase or sentences messages, elaborating structure and classroom management. Furthermore, the reasons of pedagogical translation use were to help communication in the classroom, develop the students teacher relation and facilitate foreign langaage understanding.

Abstract

This study aimed at increasing grade VII students’ achievement in speaking monologue text by using media for English in SMP Negeri 29 Medan, Indonesia. Video as learning media needs to be used to increase students' speaking skills. The method of research used was Classroom Action Research (CAR). The research procedure included planning, implementation of actions, observation and reflection. The techniques used in this study were questionnaires, interviews, and observations. The data were analyzed by quantitative and qualitative techniques. Based on the results of the research and discussion, it can be concluded that the use of media could improve the quality of results and the learning process of English speaking aspects which increased the average students’ score in the initial data was 57.7% to 58.31% (cycle I) and increased to 65.78% (cycle II), the average score of classical completeness also increased from the original 15.6% (initial data) to 37.5% (cycle II) and 81.25% (cycle II). Then, fluency was the highest increasing in improving the students’ speaking ability which was 0,29 from cycle I to cycle II

Abstract

Industrial Revolution 4.0 has influenced many sectors, which are now a lot changes entering to human life by the presence of information technology.The use of power and data in the massive digital technology has become unlimited caused by its development at this present time. This study is aimed at developing the appropriate blended course materials of English for Specific Purposes for students of English Education Study Program, Languages and Arts Faculty, Universitas Negeri Medan. This study is focused on ESP Blended Learning Course Materials for Students of Seventh Semester of English Education Study Program. Research and Development (R & D) design is applied through six stages, there are 1). collecting information and data, 2). data analysis, 3). new materials design based on the needs analysis, 4). experts validation, 5). new material revision, and 6). final product. The instruments of collecting data are by applying two strategies: interview and questionnaires. The results show that the materials used in the 7th semester of English Education Study Program is developed through the implementation of the R&D simplification. The response of questionnaires signified low standard for the students after being analyzed. This results of the study developed ESP Blended Learning Course materials which focused on the following materials: Models and Teaching Strategies in ESP; Language Features: Linguistics and Grammar; Language Skills (Listening, Reading, Speaking, and Writing); Genre Text in ESP (Descriptive Text, Procedure Text, Analytical Exposition Text, and Argumentative Text).

Abstract

This research focuses on how reading text materials for the fashion design study program at SMKN 1 Stabat are created. The goal of this project was to provide English reading materials with descriptive language that were appropriate for students in the fashion design program's grade X. The study focused on grade X students at SMK N 1 Stabat, which had a total of 33 students. Questionnaires and interviews were used to gather information. The writer deduced the students' need to study English based on their school program after examining the data. Based on the needs analysis of the students, it was discovered that several reading elements from the students' book are incompatible with the syllabus. Then there's the reading material, which should be tailored to their syllabus and needs. The reading materials were completed after the materials had been designed. The total findings reveal that the new reading material received 95.8% from the Expert– lecturer and the Expert–English instructor, and that the categorization is "relevant" as the reading material criteria. The instructional materials generated were connected to the students' major, which was a fashion design degree. Gathering information and data, analyzing data, designing new reading material, validating expert, refining new reading material based on expert suggestions, and developing reading material were the six stages of material development (final product).Keywords: Reading Text Materials, Fashion Design, Descriptive Text, Research and Development (R&D)

Abstract

This study aims to find out the use of PORPE strategy in teaching reading descriptive text for the tenth grade students of SMAN 1 PercutSei Tuan in the academic year of 2019/2020. This study was conducted by using descriptive qualitative research. The data of this study were collected by using observation and interview to the process of PORPE strategy in teaching reading descriptive text and students’ self-predicted essay questions and answers as supported data. The result of observation, interview, and students’ self-predicted essay questions and answers prove that the use of PORPE strategy in teaching reading descriptive text for the tenth grade students of SMAN 1 PercutSei Tuan was 87%. Based on the result, the use of PORPE strategy which was done by the teacher were well-structured. Thus, the reason why PORPE considered to be applied because PORPE is appropriate in teaching reading descriptive text. The strategy made students more critical towards the questions because in every step they had to think critically and remember all the key points in the passage. The data were analyzed by using Sugiyono (2008) theory. It was supported that the percentage of each steps of PORPE strategy were predict (89%), organize (83%), rehearse (67%), practice (100%), and evaluate (100%). This showed that the students were interested in PORPE strategy and the average of students’ score of self-predicted essay questions and answers was 91. This number is categorized as good according to Nurgiyantoro’s Criterion Referenced Evaluation. Thus, PORPE strategy is effective and appropriate to be used in reading text, particularly descriptive text.Keywords: PORPE strategy, reading, descriptive text.

Abstract

Students’ worksheet, as one of learning tools that is used to involve the students to work actively during teaching and learning process, should be developed based on the students’ need. Students’ worksheet with scientific approach in listening skill has not applied. A good student’s worksheet must be satisfied criteria of valid, practical and effective. This research is a developmental research using Research and Development (RnD). It has been conducted on 35 students of SMK Negeri 10 Medan grade X for Multimedia Program. In this study, data obtained from Curriculum syllabus analysis, students’ need analysis and results of validation. Students’ need analysis was done to analyze the students’ perception about the previous learning materials and to know what kind of learning material they need. All of student answer the questionnaire in students’ worksheet in listening skill. From their answers are summarized into questions and answers for students’ worksheet, especially in the listening activity.  Keywords: Students’ worksheet, scientific approach, listening skill.

Abstract

This study aims at investigating the effect of Task-Based Learning Method on students’ achievement in writing a procedure text. This study was experimental in nature. The population of this study was the first year students at SMA Negeri 2 Tanjung Balai. The total number of the population was 280 students in seven classes. There were 60 students chosen as the sample by using random sampling technique. The sample was divided into two groups, namely control group and experimental group. The experimental group was taught by using Task-Based Learning Method and control group was taught without using Task-Based Learning Method. The instrument for collecting the data was a writing test. To obtain test reliability, the writer applied the Pearson Product Formula. The calculation showed that the reliability of the test was  0.90. It was categorized as very high reliability. The data were analyzed by using the t-test formula. The result of the analysis showed that the t-observed value was higher than t-table (2.34>2.00) at the level of significance 0.05 with a freedom degree of 58. It means that the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted and the null hypothesis (Ho) was rejected. Based on the findings of this study, it was found that there was a significant effect of Task-Based Learning Method on students’ achievement in writing procedure texts.   Key Words: Task-Based Learning, Writing, Procedure Text.
