Abstract

The aim of this study is to discover the effect of applying SQ3R method inreading comprehension. Experimental research design is used as the research method.This research took place at SMA Nasrani 2Medan. There were 2 classes chosen as thesample with 30 students in each class. The classes were divided into two groups namelyexperimental and control group. The experimental group was taught by using SQ3Rmethod and the control group was taught by using conventional method. The instrumentused to collect the data was a set of multiple choice tests, which divided as pre test andpost test. The result of the research was analyzed by using t-test formula. The resultshowed that t-test was higher than t-table (4,23>2,00) at the level of significant 0,05with degree of freedom (df) 58. It means that hypothesis alternative (Ha) is acceptedwhich shows that SQ3R method significantly improves the student’s readingcomprehension.

Abstract

This study concerned with the improvement of students’ achievement in writing recounttext by applying Peer Response technique. The objective of this study was to discoverwhether peer response technique could significantly improve students’ achievement inwriting recount text. It was conducted by using classroom action research which wascarried out in two cycles in six meetings. The subject of the research was class X-1SMA Negeri 1 Deli Tua. The number of the students was 32. The instruments forcollecting data were writing tests as the quantitative data and diary notes, observationsheet, interview sheet and questionnaire sheet as qualitative data. Based on the students’writing test, the students’ score was improved in every test. In the first test, the meanscore was 62.93. In the second test, the mean score was 72.21. In the last test, the meanscore of the students was 77.28. In line with the data, it was showed that peer responsetechnique significantly improved student’s achievement in writing recount text.

Abstract

This study attempts to Improving Students’ Achievement Through the Process GenreApproach. The objective of the study is to discover whether the use of the ProcessGenre approach could significantly improve students’ writing achievement. This studyconduct by applying Classroom Action Research which was carried out in two cycles inten meetings. The subject of this study of SMA Panca Budi Medan which consisted of39 students of class X – 2 reguler.. Orientation test was done in the first meeting, test IIwas done in the fourth meeting, and test III was done in the last meeting. The mean ofstudents’ score test III (76,242) was higher than the test II (66,878) and test I (57,606).Besides, the qualitative data was taken from observation sheet, interview, questionnaire,and diary notes. It was found that teaching learning process ran well. By applying theProcess Genre Approach in the classroom, the students understood the content ofdescriptive text easily. They also were active and enthusiastic during the teachinglearning process. The result of the research showed that the application of the ProcessGenre approach significantly improved students’ achievement in writing descriptive text

Abstract

The study was aimed to to develop learning media in Writing Descriptive Text for Grade VII of Junior High School Students. This study was conducted by using Research and Development (R&D) design through six stages; gathering information and data, analyzing data, designing materials, validating by experts, revising, and final product. The subject of the study was Grade VII of SMP Ypi Amir Hamzah Medan. The instruments of data collection were gathered  by administring interview and distributing questionnaire. The study conducted interview to the English teacher and distributing questionnaire to 25 respondents to get the students’ needs. The interview and questionnaire results proved that the students need English learning media which can motivate the students to understand about writing descriptive text. The product had been validated by the experts namely English lecturer and English teacher. The product result was Word Wall which is modifying House based on destination of North Sumatera. The result of experts’ validation showed that the media was an appropriate media to be used on writing descriptive text by getting the average percentage 92% categorized excellent.Keywords: Writing, Descriptive Text, Word Wall, Research and Development

Abstract

The objective of this study is to find out whether the application of Index Card Match Strategy can improve students’achievement in writing procedure text. This study was conducted by using classroom action research. The subject of this research was the grade elevent students of SMA N 1 Lau Baleng. The research was conducted in two cycles. The first cycle consisted of three meetings and the second cycle consisted of two meetings. The instruments for collecting data used writing test for quantitative data and as the quantitaive data used diary notes, questionnaires sheet, interview and observation sheet. Based on the writing tests result, the students score improved in every test. In orientation test, the mean score was 50,28. In cycle 1 the mean score was 64,96 and the mean score cycle II was 77,35. Based on the diary notes and observation sheet, students shown their progress in learning writing English by the application of Index Card Match Strategy and the classroom action research. Students enjoyed the process of learning writing English concluded from the interview sheet. In line with the data, it was found that the index card match strategy can improve students’achievement in writing pocedure text.

Abstract

The objective of this study was to find out whether demonstration method has a significant effect on students’ achievement in writing  procedure texts.  The population of the study was 90 third year students at SMP Negeri II Tambangan, in three classes. Sixty students were taken as the sample by using random sampling. The sample was divided in to two groups. Thirty students as the experimental group were taught by using a demonstration method and thirty students as the control group were taught by using a teacher’s method. The instrument used in this study was a writing test. To obtain test reliability, the Person Product Moment Formula was used and the calculation showed that the reliability of the test was 0.95. Then, after analyzing the data, it was found that the t-test was 3.33 with a freedom degree of 58 at the level significance (p = 0.05) = 2.000 meaning that t-test was higher than t-table (3.33 > 2.000). Based on the result, the Ha was accepted. The result suggested that the demonstration method had a significant effect on students’ achievement in writing procedure text.   Key Words: Demonstration Method, Teacher’s Method, Writing, Procedure Text.

Abstract

Learning English is one of the important things for students to acquire English well. Many students are still confused to choose what are the strategies that appropriate for them. Several strategies can be used for students to get higher achievement. Meanwhile, students have individual characteristics related to their learning processes, the used of the strategies will give big impact for their achievement. Students whose have high achievement also have their own strategies in their learning process. This is why this research interesting. The objective of the study was known what are the learning strategies used by high achievement students of SMA Dharma Pancasila Medan. By using questioner and interviewed which is adopted from Strategy Inventory for Language Learning (SILL) version 7.0 (ESL/EFL) by Oxford (1990) translated into Bahasa Indonesia to avoid misinterpretation and misunderstanding. The study's result was based on the answers using yes/no questions to determine whether students used direct or indirect strategies, from the interview session followed by the three high achiever students of SMA Dharma Pancasila Medan. The first students tend to used memory, metacognitive and compensation strategies as the main strategies. The second high achievers employed cognitive, metacognitive, and compensation strategies as the main strategies in learning English. Meanwhile, the third used memory, cognitive and social strategy as the main strategies. The data showed the students combined all strategies in the learning process and used three strategies as the main strategy.Keywords : English, Learning Strategies, Achievement.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to describe the errors in simple past tense of recount text. In addition, this study is also aimed to describe the causes of those errors. This study apllied the descriptive qualitative approach of which the data were obtained from the recount texts that were written by the tenth grade students of SMA Negeri 2 Doloksanggul. The data were collected by using students’ recount texts and interview. The data then were analyzed by identifying the errors first, then describing the errors, and the last explaining the errors. The errors that occurred in students’ recount text are error of omission, error of mis-formation, error of addition and error of mis-ordering. The result of the study indicates that the students made 893 of simple past tense errors which were 0,45% errors of misordering, 3,58% errors of addition, 30,12% errors of omission, and 65,85% errors of mis-formation. The dominant type of errors made by the student is errors of mis-formation. The students’ errors were caused by 36,17% intralingual interference, 58,23% interlingual interference, and 5,6% communication strategies.

Abstract

The objective of this study is to improve the students’ speaking The main objectiveof this study is to know how effective the use of Peer Response Technique in teachingwriting recount texts is. This study was conducted under the consideration that thestudents often get difficulties in retelling events in their own activities. In order toachieve the objective of the study, the writer designed an action research. The subjectsof this study was the first grade students of SMA An-Nizam Medan. The number of thesubjects of this study was 27 students. During the research, the students becoming thesubjects were taught by using Peer Response technique in teaching writing recounttexts. There were two cycles in this action research. Each cycle consisted of four phases.Before giving treatments in those two cycles, the students were given pre-test. Aftereach treatment in each cycle, the students were tested. And the last, they were givenpost-test and questionnaire. The result of this research showed that the students’ abilityin writing recount texts improved after a series of treatments given in the cycles. It canbe seen by comparing the means of their tests. The mean score for the pre-test was56.96, the mean score for test 1 was 69,85 while the mean score for the post-test was78,11. It is clear that after applying Peer Response Technique in each treatment, themean of each test improves and gets better. The use of Peer Response technique is oneof the ways to make students interest in studying English especially writing recounttext.

Abstract

This study attempts to increase students’ vocabulary achievement by using flash cards. The objective of the study is to investigate whether the using of flash card can improve students’ vocabulary achievement. This study conduct by applying Classroom Action Research which was carried out in two cycles in six meetings. The subject of this study of SD Negeri 174559 Siraituruk, Porsea which consisted of 34 students. For collecting data, the instruments used were quantitative (vocabulary test) and qualitative data (interview sheet, observation sheet, and diary notes. Based on the data, it was found that the mean of the second cycle (80, 44) is higher than the mean of first cycle (64, 85) and pre-test (44, 41).  Based on interview sheet, observation sheet and diary notes, it was found thee students were more active and more enthusiastic during the teaching learning process in the second cycle than the first one. It was concluded that teaching vocabulary by using  flash cards can improve the students’ vocabulary achievement.
