Abstract

This study aimed at describing the use of REAP technique and investigating the reasons of using REAP technique in teaching reading analytical exposition text grade eleven at SMAN 17 Medan in the academic year of 2019/2020. This study was descriptive qualitative conducted that taken one English teacher of SMAN 17 Medan. The data were collected by using an interview and observing the whole process of teaching reading analytical exposition text. The findings of this study showed that the teacher implemented four steps of REAP technique in teaching reading analytical exposition text. The teacher did every step with a good performance. The reasons of using REAP technique in teaching reading analytical exposition text were a fresh way to think to understand a text easily, encouraged students to think critically on the issues discussed, developed reading and writing skill, and also vocabulary. It also found a reason that students were easily invited to explore their ideas on the issues discussed. The findings of this study revealed that REAP technique contributed to the study of foreign language teaching especially teaching reading skill.Keywords: REAP technique, reading, analytical exposition text.

Abstract

ABSTRACT This Research and Development (R&D) is conducted to develop English teaching materials for young learners of grade four based on Islamic values of integrated language skills at SD IT AL Hijrah 2 Deli Serdang. The objectives of this study are 1) to analyze English teaching materials are needed by the students, 2) to develop the English teaching materials, and 3) to give reasons for the English teaching materials developed. The respondent of this study is 23 respondents which consisted of twenty (20) fourth-grade students, one (1) English teacher, and two (2) lecturers. The data is collected by questionnaire, interview, and documentary. The results of this study showed that 1) English teaching materials needed by the students are English teaching materials based on Islamic values of integrated language skills, 2) the development of English teaching materials were developed through four steps, namely evaluation and need analysis, material development, material validation, and revision and final product, and 3) the reason English teaching materials are developed based on Islamic values of integrated language skills is because of the Islamic elementary schools and the terms or level of young learners. Based on the expert’s judgment result, the score was 3.68, and the percentage is 90% categorized as very good. It means that the developed materials were relevant or appropriate for the fourth-grade students of Islamic elementary school. It implies that the teacher can use the developed English teaching materials based on Islamic values of integrated language skills and Islamic elementary needs to lead the students to learn English in the Islamic context. Keywords: Research and Development (R&D), Teaching Materials for Young Learners, Islamic Values of Integrated Language Skills, Islamic Elementary School

Abstract

This study focused on the investigation of implementing Scientific Approach in teaching online reading comprehension at MTsN 2 Medan. The research problem was based on the implementation of Scientific Approach as one of teaching strategies in the application of curriculum 2013 in selected school. Scientific Approach consists of several stages which somehow were not applied optimally in teaching and learning activity. The research was conducted by using qualitative descriptive design. The data were collected by observing and interviewing subjects of the study.The subjects were three teachers who used to teach reading comprehension at MTsN 2 Medan in grade eight in junior high school education level. The objectives of the research were to find out; 1) the implementation of scientific approach in online teaching reading, 2) how the strategies are realized to be implemented in online teaching reading, 3) the reason of the strategies of implementing scientific approach are realized in online teaching reading. Based on the analysis of the data. The findings of the research were: 1) teachers had applied the implementation even though it was not optimal, 2) the strategies used of the approach in order to encourage students during learning process, 3) teachers had reasons to implement scientific approach (observing, questioning, experimenting, associating, and communicating) as a teaching strategy. The result of the research would be a reference towards further study and help other teachers in applying teaching strategy of learning process

Abstract

Translation has always been the focus part of communication. A movie can convey information to the audience through pictures, dialogue and music. The picture is the visualization of the story on the screen, the dialogue is the conversation that occurs in the movie, and the music is the sound effect of the movie, which makes the story effective. The objective of this study is to explain the reason of utilizing translation strategies in Java Heat subtitling. The research deisgn used in the research is qualitative. There were eight types of translation strategies based on Baker’s theory in Java Heat movie namely translation by paraphrase using a related word (23.32%), followed by translation by omission (19.69%), translation by illustration (16.06 %), translation by a more general word (13.95%), translation by paraphrase using unrelated words (13.95%), translation by cultural substitution (8.79%), translation by using a loan word (3.44%), and translation by a more neutral/less expressive word (0.76%)”.

Abstract

Background: This research paper attempts to analyze the vocational English instructors’ view point on the cultivation of teaching material of Pedagogical Translation in the Subject of Translation in English Language Teaching (ELT). Methodology: The qualitative design was used to collect the data. Utilizing the questionnaire with Likert Scale, the quantitative data were gained from 30 vocational English teachers in Sumatera Utara Province. Findings: Data obtained revealed that 52.45 % of respondents agreed with the teaching material, and 43.10 % strongly agreed with those. Only 4.45 % of respondents strongly disagreed with those topics. Data analysis showed that the 58 elements in the Subject of Translation in ELT have covered the teaching materials in Vocational school. Conclusion: It was concluded, within nine areas questioned to the vocational English teachers, most of them (92%) agree with the statements. Furthermore, all the respondents 100% are in the opinion that there should be English for vocational school materials included within the translation materials studied in the Subject on Translation in ELT.

Abstract

The 2018 Program for International Student Assessment survey released in 2019 showed that the reading literacy HOTS skills of Indonesian students was low where Indonesia was ranked 74th out of 79 countries. .To improve students HOTS reading literacy the Ministry of Research, Technology and Higher Education developed a Literacy Improvement Program at the National Junior High School level in 2021 using The Reading to Learn Approach. In this context, the objective of this research were to develop Students Worksheet Based on The Reading To Learn Approach to improve Students' Higher Order Thinking Skills on the Competence of Reading Narrative Texts. This research is part of research and development namely stage of needs analysis. The approach used was a qualitative approach. The study was conducted in MTsN 2 Medan. This study focused on the Needs analysis stage of teachers and students regarding the worksheet based on the reading to learn approach that is going to developed. The instrument to collect the data was interview The findings shows that most of the respondents expect the worksheet of Narrative Text should be developed based on their needs. They felt very hard to read the texts in English because the materials were irrellevant and not interesting. The students also confessed their current worksheet of Narrative Text was inappropriate for them and the process of learning was boring. Therefore, some of the aspects of learning also needed to be concerned such as learning style, learning technique, the way of doing the task, the length and topic of the texts, the situation of the class, the activities in the worksheet, and the difficulties of the students, in order to make the students easier to learn English.

Abstract

ABSTRACT This article was discussed about the reasons of casual style by Boy William and Rita Ora in Nebeng Boy based on Martin Joos theory. They were frozen style, casual style, consultative style, formal style and intimate style. This article was aimed to found the reasons why the host used casual style in his vlog show. This article used Holmes theory to found that reasons. This article applied descriptive qualitative method. The data of this research were taken from the vlogshow video and the video transcript on yotube.

Abstract

The objective of this study was to develop materials of reading descriptive text as supporting learning for grade X computer and network engineering students at SMKS Harapan Al- Washliyah Sigambal. The research was conducted by using the simplication of Research and Development theory by Borg and Gall (2003) which simplified by Puslitjaknov (2008). The data was taken through observation, questionnaires, and interview. The materials were validated by an English lecturer and an English teacher by using validation sheets which is adapted from BSNP. The data were collected by using descriptive analysis and the materials were arranged based on Scientific Approach. The study’ results revealed that: (1) the materials used do not support the students study program because the topics of the materials are still considered general, (2) relevant reading materials are needed by students in vocational school especially in computer and network engineering study program, (3) the developed reading materials based on Scientific Approach have been validated with the score 3.52 from the first expert and 3.65 from the second expert which is in the range of 3.25 < ≤̅ 4.00 and categorized as “Very Good”. The reading descriptive text materials have been developed in accordance to the students’ needs based on Scientific Approach.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to establish macromedia Flash as an English teaching medium for tenth grade students at SMA Azizi Medan.This research was carried out in six stages using Research and Development (R&D) design: obtaining data and information, analyzing data, designing media, validating by experts, amending, and delivering the final result.The research focused on SMA Azizi Medan's grade X.The information was acquired by interviewing an English teacher and sending a questionnaire to 30 students to determine their needs.The results of the interview and questionnaire revealed that students require a learning medium for teaching speaking that will assist them in comprehending the narrative text.Experts have supported macromedia flash as a learning media. The average score is 4.55. It means the developed learning media by using macromedia flash is relevant or appropriate and categorized as a very good learning media for students at SMA Azizi Medan.Keywords : Research and Development (R&D), Macromedia Flash ,Narrative Text

Abstract

The research objective was to describe what and how classroom interaction patterns and what factors influenced English teacher candidates in micro-teaching. The research problem was what and how classroom interaction patterns and what factors they make in the performance of the basic skill. The research method used was qualitative research. The researchers used videotape and in-depth interviews as the research instruments to collect the data needed. The total respondents were 66 students as English teacher candidates. The results and important findings from the videos were obtained that the English teacher candidates had good, good enough, enough, and bad classroom interaction patterns. In group work, the interaction between student and student was bad. A similar thing happened in closed-ended teacher questioning, the interaction between student-teacher-student was bad too meanwhile in open-ended teacher questioning was good enough. In the choral response, the interaction pattern between student-content was good. The last was teacher talks, the interaction pattern of student-teacher was enough. Some factors influenced classroom interaction patterns such as the result from the in-depth interview that were the linguistic ability level of English teacher candidates, ability to select interesting topics, ability to master the content, ability to manage the classroom, and lack of confidence. In a conclusion, classroom interaction patterns were at different levels influenced by some factors, monotonous and mostly similar patterns for all the English teacher candidates as happened in a conventional classroom.
