Abstract

ARI is a major killer of toddlers the world, more than AIDS, malaria, and measles combined.  In the world, every year estimated more than 2 million toddlers died because of ARI (Unicef/WHO, 2006). This research was an observational study with cross sectional design. The population in this research were children was 50 toddlers. Sampling using cluster random sampling technique. The dependent variable was ARI in toddlers in Tumapel Village, Mojokerto District. The independent variables were toddlers characteristics and the physical sanitary home. The methods used to take primary data were interview with questionnaire, observation, and measurement. While secondary data collection was from the device of Tumapel Village, Dlanggu Public Health Center, and the Health Departemen of Mojokerto. This research used logistic regression with confidence interval 0,05 (α = 5%). The result showed there were 2 variables that had significant correlation with ARI, they were age of toddlers (p=0,013) and the physical sanitary home (p=0,015). The results of temperature and humidity measurement were not correlated, moreover, PM2,5measurement in the respondents’ house exceed the limit sets by the Ministry of Health (Permenkes No. 1077 Tahun 2011). The conclusion of this research was age of the toddlers and the physical sanitary home had correlation with ARI. It was recommended to improve toddlers immunity through giving the balance diet and to improve environmental health with closing house ventilation in the day and afternoon so the concentration of PM2,5in the house can be decreased to lower the risk of ARI.

Abstract

There were 61 confirmed cases of measles in Surabaya in 2016, whereas in January-May 2017 there were 52 confirmed cases of measles. Many factors that could affect the incidence of measles include physical conditions of the house (lighting, occupancy density, and ventilation area) and toddler characteristics (age, gender, immunization status of measles, exclusive breastfeeding and contact history ). The purpose of this study was to analyze the relationship between physical conditions of the house and toddler characteristics with the incidence of measles in Surabaya. It was an observational study in the form of case study control design. This study used all confirmed measles cases on toddlers during January-May 2017 which had been proven by IgM laboratory examination by Health Office of Surabaya City. The results of this study indicated that there was a significant correlation between lighting (approx.sig=0.025), occupancy density (approx.sig=0.001), immunization status (approx.sig=0.136) and contact history with measles incident on toddlers in Surabaya. The conclusions of this study were the conditions of lighting, density, measles immunization status and contact history were significant risk factors for the incidence of measles. Mothers should maintain the cleanliness of the home environment, and toddler’s bedroom should get enough sunlight and have good air circulation by opening windows to prevent the growth of measles virus.

Abstract

Introduction: Helminthiasis becomes one of the infectious diseases included in neglected diseases that receive less attention and mostly occurred in tropical countries. The World Health Organization (WHO) in 2020 stated that helminthiasis spread throughout sub-Saharan Africa, America, China, and East Asia where 60% suffered by children. STH infections may result from poor hygiene in many school aged-children, especially in primary school. This article was written to analyze the personal hygiene of primary school children that may affect the incidence of helminthiasis. Discussion: An integrative literature review was conducted using databases, from Google Scholar, Pubmed, Research Gate, and Science Direct databases. It was 24 articles consisting of 20 articles published by international journals and 4 articles in Indonesian journals. Most of the infectious agents in Asia were Ascaris lumbricoides and Trichuris trichiura, while Ascaris lumbricoides, Hookworms, and Trichuris trichiura dominate in Africa. Poor personal hygiene may a risk of infection. For example, children in Asia do not cut their nails or wash their hands. While children in Africa do not wash their hands, walked barefoot, and conducted open defecation. Conclusion: Personal hygiene of primary school children has a positive effect on the incidence of helminthiasis in Asia and Africa with different prevalences. To prevent and control helminthiasis in school children, schools should provide education about personal hygiene, improve sanitary facilities, and routinely give anthelmintics every six months.
