Abstract

Dust particles that enter the body through inhalation and into the lungs can cause disturbances in the respiratory tract. Dust particles produced from cotton fibers can contain endotoxin biological agents, inhalation of endotoxins can also cause other diseases namely, flu, bronchitis, chronic obstructive pulmonary and decreased lung function. This study was conducted for the analysis of endotoxin exposure in cotton dust as a risk factor for decreasing lung function of workers in the textile industry. The method used in writing this article is a literature review using ten scientific articles to analyze the level of endotoxins in cotton dust, the characteristics of workers and the decline in lung function in workers. The study found that the highest levels of endotoxins were found in cotton mills in Shanghai with annual endotoxin levels of 1,730-65,204 EU/m3. Endotoxins in cotton dust are found most abundantly in spinning and weaving units. Factors such as age, length of service and smoking status are risk factors for workers experiencing a decrease in lung function, while the influence of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) still needs to be studied further.

Abstract

Introduction: Workers in the battery industry are at risk of being exposed to cadmium (Cd), which can cause various health problems, including kidney disorders. This study aims to investigate the association between biomarkers of Cd exposure and effect with kidney disorders among workers in the battery industry. Methods: A systematic review approach was used in this study, employing relevant keywords and inclusion criteria to search electronic databases, such as Google scholar, PubMed, Science Direct, and Research Gate. The selected articles included research articles published between 2010 and 2020, with cross-sectional, cohort, and case-control study designs. To ensure the quality of the articles reviewed, the Critical Appraisal Skill Programme (CASP) was used. Results: The CASP tools facilitated the exploration of trustworthy and relevant articles for the literature review. Previous studies revealed that individuals of various ages, ranging from teenagers to adults aged 12-60, both males and females, are commonly employed in the battery industry. Cadmium was detected in the hair, urine, and blood samples of these workers. Previous studies also identified kidney disorders among these workers by analyzing biomarkers such as creatinine, retinol-binding protein, blood urea nitrogen, and hemoglobin, which were all found to be above the normal range. Furthermore, increased Cd levels in the blood of workers caused glomerular disorder and tubular dysfunction, eventually resulting in kidney function disorders. Conclusion: Cd levels in the bodies of workers in the battery industry serves as a reliable biomarker of Cd exposure, and are closely related to the number of effect biomarkers that can contribute to kidney disorders. This study emphasizes the importance of monitoring Cd exposure levels among workers in the battery industry.

Abstract

Stunting in children under five is a global health problem that can be influenced by various factors, including inadequate home sanitation. Stunting in children can be chronic from environmental sanitation problems, infectious diseases, and lack of food consumption. The contribution of poor home environmental sanitation to the problem of stunting can be seen from the growth of disease-causing microorganisms that can cause infections in the body, so that children experience growth failure. Pakis Village, as the partner area of this program, is part of the working area of Puskesmas Pakis Surabaya. Stunting in Pakis Village is still a serious problem because it is one of the villages with a high incidence of stunting in Surabaya City in 2022. This community service activity contributes to further understanding of the description of home sanitation and the incidence of stunting in toddlers. Community service is carried out in the form of home environmental sanitation counseling in supporting the elimination of stunting in infants and toddlers. Participants in the Community Service counseling were 26 participants out of 30 pre-test average results of participants who knew about home environmental sanitation which was 67.63 then after counseling / education related to home environmental sanitation there was an increase of 20.38% or the average post test score was 81.41. Cooperation between the government, community, and harvesters is needed.
