Abstract

This study aims to develop learning materials for Sharaf based on a communicative approach to address the limitations of existing instructional practices that have not optimally enhanced students’ Arabic speaking skills (mahārah al-kalām). It also seeks to examine the validity, practicality, and effectiveness of the developed materials among students at STIBA Islamic Institute of Makassar. The research employed a design and development research approach consisting of several stages: needs analysis, design, development, and evaluation. The research data consisted of both quantitative and qualitative data obtained from 30 first-semester students as well as subject-matter experts and instructional design experts. Data were collected through expert validation sheets, student response questionnaires, observation sheets, and pretest–posttest assessments of Arabic language proficiency. The data were then analyzed using descriptive quantitative and qualitative analysis to determine the validity, practicality, and effectiveness of the developed learning materials. The findings reveal that the developed materials demonstrate a very high level of validity, with an average score of 3.97, and are considered practical and engaging based on positive student responses and observations of the learning implementation. The effectiveness test indicates a significant improvement in students’ speaking ability after the use of the learning materials, with an N-gain score of 0.41, which falls into the moderate category. These findings suggest that integrating Sharaf rules into meaningful communicative activities can bridge the gap between students’ mastery of linguistic structures and their ability to apply them in Arabic-speaking practice. Therefore, Sharaf learning materials based on a communicative approach are suitable to be used as an innovative alternative in teaching Sharaf at Islamic higher education institutions.

Abstract

This study examines the design of Arabic instructional materials intended to improve university students’ reading skills, especially in reading unvowelled Arabic texts, through the use of Qutrub’s linguistic triangles. The study addresses three main questions: how Qutrub’s linguistic triangles can support the development of Arabic reading skills, what form of instructional materials can be designed on the basis of these triangles, and how such materials may be pedagogically implemented in higher education. This research employed a qualitative library research design with a descriptive-analytic approach. Data were collected from Qutrub’s al-Muthallathat, its commentaries, classical and modern lexicons, and relevant studies on Arabic reading pedagogy and instructional-material development. Data were analyzed using the interactive model of Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña, involving data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings show that linguistic triangles provide not only lexical enrichment but also phonological, morphological, and semantic discrimination that can help learners distinguish visually similar lexical items in unvowelled texts. Based on the analysis, the study proposes instructional materials organized into vocabulary presentation, contextualized dialogues, guided reading texts, sentence-pattern exercises, and comprehension tasks. The study argues that Qutrub’s linguistic triangles may serve as a linguistically grounded resource for developing Arabic reading materials for non-native learners at the university level. The novelty of this study lies in integrating the classical Arabic lexical heritage of al-muthallathat into the contemporary design of Arabic reading instructional materials.

Abstract

Pengembangan bahan ajar memiliki beberapa prosedur diantaranya, analisis, perancangan, penulisan dan penyusunan materi, evaluasi, dan revisi. Adapun pada artikel ini hanya berfokus pada analisis kebutuhan siswa khususnya dalam pembelajaran bahasa Arab. Analisis kebutuhan siswa merupakan tahap awal dalam pengembangan bahan ajar. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk menganalisis kebutuhan bahan ajar yang dibutuhkan siswa madrasah tsanawiyah dalam pengembangan pembelajaran bahasa Arab. Metode yang digunakan dalam peneletian ini yaitu kualitatif deskriptif dengan menggunakan analisis data dari Miles dan Huberman. Adapun hasil analisis yang diperoleh dapat disimpulkan bahwa walaupun siswa menganggap bahan yang digunakan sekarang sangat membantu, akan tetapi dengan bahan ajar tersebut siswa belum mampu mencapai nilai KKM pada assesmen akhir semester. Maka dibutuhkan pengembangan bahan ajar bahasa Arab yang dapat membantu siswa meningkatkan hasil belajarnya khususnya pada pembelajaran kosa kata . Berdasarkan hasil analisis kebutuhan siswa, bahan ajar yang dibutuhkan untuk meningkatkan pelajaran bahasa Arab siswa berupa buku teks yang lebih menekankan materi kosa kata dengan dilengkapi gambar dan ilustrasi. Media pembelajaran yang dapat digunakan bisa dengan buku teks pelajaran atau dengan memberikan permainan interaktif.
