Abstract

This study aims to determine the problem solving abilities of high school students in solving physics problem topic working and energy. A total of 64 respondents solved physics problem about work and energy which consisted of four questions. The students' answers were evaluated using a rubric consisting of five indicators, namely useful description (UD), physics approach (PA), specific application of physics (SPA), mathematical procedures (MP), and logical progression (LP). The data analysis technique used qualitative descriptive. The results of the analysis show that the score of students' problem solving abilities is in a sufficient category, with the dominant score on indicators UD, PA and SPA. Students get poor score criteria on MP and LP indicators. In this case, students experience some difficulties, among others, students' mistakes in applying physics concepts in mathematical equations, students' mistakes in using equations that are not relevant to the problems presented and students' mistakes in using calculations that do not focus on the problem presented.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the improvement of interviewing skill by Think, Pair, Share learning model in fourth grade students of SDN Dukuharum Jombang. This Classroom Action Research consists of 2 cycles which is each cycle consisting of 4 meetings. The subjects of this study were 15 fourth grade students of SDN Dukuharum Jombang. The analysis technique uses descriptive analysis. Data were collected by observation, interview and documentation. Through this study, the students improvement of interviewing skills in the first cycle achieve 70.5% in average and the second cycle is 77.2% in average. The results prove that Think, Pair, Share learning model can improve the student’s interviewing skill.

Abstract

Thematic learning carried out in elementary schools has not trained students' high-level thinking skills as a whole due to the use of learning models that tend to be monotonous and make students bored. This study aims to determine the effect of the Problem Based Learning (PBL) model on HOTS (Higher Order Thinking Skillls). The research method used is quantitative experiments with the design of nonequivalent group design. The results showed that the teacher's implementation was sufficient in accordance with the syntax of the PBL learning model so that it could influence HOTS students. The difference in HOTS scores between the two classes is indicated by the average post-test scores. The use of PBL models should be implemented for students to be able to train HOTS students.

Abstract

This research was focused on the influence of the strategy of cognitive conflict based on the students pre-test to reduce misconceptions on the concept of mechanical wave. Method which is used in the research was quasi-experiment. The research used two subjects which are experiment class and controlled class. Each classes have 32 students who have same abilities based on their pre-test scores. To analyze the data, Anacova was used for statistical analyzing. The result of this research showed that the strategy of cognitive conflict successfully reduced the misconceptions of the students.

Abstract

Scientific reasoning skills are very important for students to be obtained as their future provisions considering they are firmly related to problem solving and critical thinking skills. The purpose of this study was to identify high school students’ SRA based on gender in Situbondo Regency. This research method is quantitative descriptive utilizing a sample of 195 high school students selected utilizing purposive sampling. The instrument consisted of 26 open-ended multiple-choice questions with a reliability coefficient α = 0.797. The results of this research indicate that the distinctions in SRA between male and female students are inexistent. However, female students have a slightly higher average SRS value and outperform the SRS level achievement of male students, spesifically on correlational reasoning, probabilistic reasoning, and hyphotetico-deductive reasoning. In addition, most of students (84,10%) remain on the concrete operational level and this indicates that the students’ SRSs is still low. Combinatorial reasoning considered as the lowest achievement indicators whilst correlation reasoning indicators quite the opposite. Based on the findings, the implication based on theory and practices have been discussed.

Abstract

This study aims to explore students’ conceptual understanding of thermodynamic in ADI for STEM education. The study uses embedded experimental design methods. It involved 29 students of XI grade high school in Kupang. Instruments tes consisted of 13 reasoning multiple chooise questions. Wilcoxon test results is P=.000 with an average posttest higher than pretest shows that there is significant difference between students' conceptual understanding of before and after learning. The effect size value is 2,39. Students’ conceptual understanding of each indicator is also discussed.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of inquiry learning with scaffolding on science process skills and understanding of light material concepts in fourth grade students. This type of research is a quasi-experimental design with a non-equivalent control group. The samples taken were students of class IV A (experimental) with 25 students and class IV B (control) with 22 students. The results of this study indicate that the value of science process skills and the percentage of students' understanding of concepts in light material in the experimental class have a significant increase compared to the control class. From the results of Man-Whitney and Anacova statistics it can be concluded that, there is a significant difference in the use of Inquiry learning with scaffolding of science process skills and understanding of light material concepts in fourth grade elementary school students.

Abstract

The aim of this research to explore the level of Locus of Control students towards learning physics and to examine the interrelationship between the dimensions of Locus of Control in Physics Learning. A total of 215 students majored in Natural Sciences Senior High School who as the participants of this study and were invited to complete the instrument: Locus of Control in Physics Learning (LOCPL). The Locus of Control questionnaire was developed from Rotter (1966) and validated through an Exploratory Factor Analysis of participants' responses and Pearson Correlation Product Moment is used to measure the level of interrelation between dimensions. The results show that first, the validity and reliability instruments used in the study have a satisfactory level. Second, the value of the construct validity of the LOC instrument that varies from the numbers 0.415-0.782 with a total variance explained = 60.674%. Overall the value of the Cronbach's alpha coefficient instrument gets 0.607 results. The LOCI dimension occupies the first position in the LOC factor level, followed by LOCII and LOCIII. Then the results show that the interrelationship between each of the dimensions Locus of Control are significant.

Abstract

This research aims to explore construction of teacher identity through life experiences. Data were collected from observation, interviews, and document analysis. The results of this research indicate that in the perspective of discourse identity, TN is a teacher who emphasizes contextual learning and student centered learning. Based on the perspective of nature identity, kinesthetic learning and her fondness in mathematics have a major influence on her interest in physics. Meanwhile, from the perspective of affinity identity, family and role models greatly influence TN's beliefs about learning and her decision to have a career as a teacher. From the perspective of institution identity, formal institutions have both positive and negative impact on the construction of TN’s identity, while informal institutions such as organizations have a major influence on TN’s physics interests and rhetorical skills.
