Abstract

This study examines family communication patterns in the decision-making process regarding formal education for children in the Sedulur Sikep community in Kampung Samin, Dukuh Karangpace, Klopoduwur Village, Blora Regency. The research was conducted in response to the shifting attitudes of some Sedulur Sikep families toward formal education, from initial resistance to gradual acceptance in line with social change. The study aims to describe and analyze the meaning of formal education, family communication patterns, the negotiation and deliberation process, and the influence of Sedulur Sikep cultural values on educational decisions. This research employed a qualitative approach with an ethnographic case study design. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, participant observation, documentation, and field notes from four family informants. The data were analyzed inductively through coding, source triangulation, technique triangulation, and ethnographic interpretation. The findings show that formal education is understood differently by Sedulur Sikep families, namely as a “key,” a “bridge,” an “obligation,” and a “label,” depending on the parents’ life experiences and social positions. Family communication patterns were also not uniform; they tended to reflect protective, pluralistic, compelled laissez-faire, and pluralistic in rhetoric but protective in practice. The decision-making process was marked by negotiations that were not always equal, but rather took the form of submission, firm assertion, postponement, or final rejection. Sedulur Sikep values such as hard work, simplicity, honesty, and ora gumantung marang wong liya functioned both as sources of legitimacy and as constraints in family communication. The study concludes that decisions about children’s formal education in Sedulur Sikep families are the result of a complex negotiation between cultural values, historical experiences, economic conditions, and power dynamics within the family.

Abstract

The beauty industry in Indonesia has experienced rapid growth along with the increasing public interest in skincare products. This development has also been accompanied by the emergence of the overclaim phenomenon, referring to product claims that do not accurately reflect their actual content. The issue gained public attention after the TikTok account @dokterdetektif revealed alleged discrepancies in the active ingredient content of Azarine products. This information triggered various reactions among social media users and raised consumer doubts about a brand that had previously been trusted. Therefore, this study aims to examine the relationship between exposure to skincare overclaim information and electronic word of mouth (e WOM) on consumers’ purchase intention toward Azarine products. This study employed a quantitative explanatory approach within a positivist paradigm. Data were collected through questionnaires distributed to 60 Indonesian TikTok users who had been exposed to content from @dokterdetektif and were familiar with Azarine products. The sampling technique used was non-probability sampling with an incidental sampling method. Data were analyzed using Kendall’s Tau-b correlation test. The results indicate that exposure to skincare overclaim information has a weak relationship with the decline in purchase intention, as some respondents still considered purchasing Azarine products despite being exposed to information regarding the overclaim issue. Meanwhile, electronic word of mouth (e-WOM) demonstrates a moderate relationship with the decline in purchase intention because comments, reviews, and experiences shared by other users encourage consumers to become more selective and only purchase certain products. These findings support Cognitive Dissonance Theory, which explains that information contradicting consumers’ prior beliefs can influence their evaluations and purchasing decisions. Future research is recommended to include variables such as brand image, brand trust, or brand loyalty to provide a more comprehensive understanding of consumer behavior.

Abstract

This study was motivated by the rapid growth of the beauty industry in Indonesia, particularly in the skincare segment, which has intensified competition among brands. Azarine, a growing local skincare brand, appointed Dino of SEVENTEEN as its first international brand ambassador, generating significant engagement on Twitter (X) especially among Generation Z consumers within fan communities. Beyond the brand ambassador's presence, communication within reference groups also plays a key role in shaping consumers' brand perceptions. Therefore, this study aims to examine the effect of Dino SEVENTEEN's credibility as brand ambassador and the frequency of reference group communication on Azarine's brand image among Generation Z on Twitter (X). This study employed a quantitative approach involving 207 Generation Z respondents who are active Twitter (X) users and are aware of Dino SEVENTEEN as Azarine's brand ambassador. The collected data were analyzed using simple linear regression through SPSS. The results indicate that Dino SEVENTEEN's credibility as brand ambassador has a positive and significant effect on Azarine's brand image, with a significance value of 0.000 and an R Square value of 0.375. The frequency of reference group communication also has a positive and significant effect on Azarine's brand image, with a significance value of 0.000 and an R Square value of 0.617. These findings confirm that the frequency of reference group communication is a more dominant factor than the brand ambassador in shaping Azarine's brand image. This means that recommendations, shared experiences, and social conversations within consumers' reference groups exert a stronger influence on brand image than the mere presence of a brand ambassador. Therefore, it is important for Azarine to not only focus on selecting the right brand ambassador, but also to optimize community communication and reference group engagement as a primary strategy for strengthening its brand image.

Abstract

Monster (2023) is a collaboration film by director Hirokazu Koreeda and script writer Yuji Sakamoto. The film presents a representation of homosexuality within child characters through an implicit and symbolic multi-perspective narrative, set within a society that still very much upholds heteronormatives values. This study aims to identify and describe meaning-making of child audiences aged 13–15 towards the message of homosexuality conveyed in the film. The research employs a descriptive qualitative approach with Stuart Hall’s reception analysis as its primary method, supported by Roland Barthes’ semiotic analysis theory to identify the film’s preferred reading. The research subjects consist of six informants selected through purposive sampling method, with the criteria of being 13–15 years old and having watched the film Monster (2023) in full at least once. Data were collected through in-depth interviews and literature study. The findings reveal that child audiences interpret the representation of homosexuality heterogenously, falling into three decoding positions according to Hall’s reception theories: one informant in the hegemonic-dominant position, three informants in the negotiated position, and two informants in oppositional position. Most informants were able to perceive the distinctive emotional closeness between the characters Minato and Yori; however, their readings diverged when required to name that closeness as romantic attraction indicating homosexuality. This act of naming becomes the crucial point that distinguish the three final positions of six informants. The differences are most strongly influenced by four interacting factors, namely religious values, media literacy, social environment, and personal experience. This study affirms that children are active audiences whose reception is dynamic and contextual rather than passive. Their socio-cultural background influences rather big part of their interpretation but does not determine it entirely.

Abstract

The lost tumbler case involving KAI Commuterline developed into a digital issue after gaining public attention through TikTok content and online news coverage. This study aims to analyze the influence of TikTok content exposure regarding the lost tumbler case and portal news exposure regarding crisis handling on consumer loyalty toward KAI Commuterline Jabodetabek. This research applies a quantitative approach with a descriptive-explanatory design. The sample consisted of 54 respondents selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected using an online questionnaire and analyzed through multiple linear regression with SPSS. The findings show that TikTok content exposure has a positive and significant effect on consumer loyalty. Portal news exposure has a positive direction, but it is not statistically significant as a partial predictor. Simultaneously, TikTok content exposure and portal news exposure significantly influence consumer loyalty, with an R Square value of 0.533. These findings indicate that digital information exposure contributes to consumer loyalty in public transportation services, although direct service experience and mobility needs may also shape consumer loyalty.

Abstract

Cases of Non-Consensual Dissemination of Intimate Images (NCII) have continued to occur in recent years and remain common form of secxual violence in the digital sphere. A series of cases have docimented similar patterns of control and threats, leading to psychological trauma, negative judgements, and difficulties in social interaction. Unlike previous studies, which focused primarily on legal and psychological perspectives or addressed sexual violence in general, this study specifically approaches the issue from communication perspective and focuses on the context of NCII within romantic relationship. This is a qualitative study with a phenomenological approach. Data were collected through in-depth interview with a NCII survivor. Data were analyzed using Moustakas’s transcendental method. The result indicates that self-disclosure occurs gradually through considerations of safety, trust, and partner response. Informan Dts selectively manage communication by adjusting the content, timing, and depth of information to reduce the risk of negative judgment and rejection. Face-to-face communication is the preferred form of disclosure because it allows informan Dts to directly observe their partners' responses. Traumatic experiences do not prevent informan Dts from establishing new romantic relationships, but rather form more selective relationships based on safety, trust, acceptance, and privacy management.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the influence of exposure to content regarding the Free Nutritious Meal Program (Program Makan Bergizi Gratis/MBG) on TikTok and the level of digital literacy on the public image of President Prabowo Subianto. The study is motivated by the widespread dissemination of information about the MBG Program on social media, particularly TikTok, which has the potential to shape public perceptions of President Prabowo Subianto as a figure closely associated with the program. This research employed an explanatory quantitative approach using a survey method involving TikTok users in Indonesia who had been exposed to content related to the MBG Program. Data were collected through questionnaires and analyzed using multiple linear regression. The findings indicate that exposure to content regarding the Free Nutritious Meal Program on TikTok influences the public image of President Prabowo Subianto. Higher exposure to content containing negative narratives about the program tends to be associated with a less favorable image of President Prabowo Subianto among TikTok users. In contrast, a higher level of digital literacy encourages individuals to critically understand and evaluate information, enabling them to develop more balanced and proportional assessments of President Prabowo Subianto. The study also reveals that exposure to content regarding the Free Nutritious Meal Program on TikTok and digital literacy jointly contribute to the formation of President Prabowo Subianto’s public image. These findings suggest that political image formation in the digital era is influenced not only by information disseminated through social media but also by individuals’ ability to access, understand, evaluate, and verify the information they receive. This study highlights the significant role of social media in shaping political image, while digital literacy functions as an essential capability that helps individuals respond to information in a more critical and objective manner. Therefore, enhancing digital literacy is important to support the development of more rational public judgments regarding public policies and political figures in the digital era.

Abstract

Mami Ayam Pop is a culinary micro, small, and medium enterprise (MSME) in Semarang specializing in Ayam Pop. Based on a survey involving 202 respondents, the brand awareness of Mami Ayam Pop was relatively low, with 76.7% of respondents unfamiliar with the brand and 81.2% stating that the brand positioning as an Ayam Pop specialist had not been clearly communicated. These findings indicate the need for an integrated brand communication strategy to improve both brand awareness and consumer engagement. This study aims to analyze the implementation of the Flavor and Tunes Pop campaign as a brand communication strategy to enhance the brand awareness and brand engagement of Mami Ayam Pop. The campaign was developed using the Integrated Marketing Communication (IMC) approach by integrating online and offline marketing activities, including Instagram and TikTok content management, collaboration with micro-influencers, the Vote Your Iftar Flavor program, and the Ramadhan Satnight Tunes event. Throughout the campaign, the author served as the Account Executive, Strategist, and Event Manager, responsible for client coordination, communication strategy development, and campaign planning and execution. The campaign implementation resulted in increased brand exposure, higher audience engagement on social media, greater consumer participation in campaign activities, and improved public understanding of Mami Ayam Pop's positioning as an Ayam Pop specialty restaurant. The integration of various communication channels successfully created a more interactive consumer experience, strengthened the relationship between the brand and its audience, and contributed to the improvement of both brand awareness and brand engagement. These findings demonstrate that the implementation of an integrated marketing communication strategy through the Flavor and Tunes Pop campaign was effective in strengthening Mami Ayam Pop's positioning as a specialty Ayam Pop culinary brand in Semarang.
